DT Shelton, Brown options declined . 2019 Draft DT discussion

thats certainly a surprise

Agree.

If the Pats can't sign him to an extension yet this year, I think most fans will be surprised at the size of the contract Shelton may fetch in free agency next spring. Several of the 14 remaining 3-4 teams in the NFL are still in need of a solid Nose Tackle.

The same pretty much applies to Malcolm Brown. There are several other DTs who have been less productive over the past three seasons than Brown who are making $8M-$12M, so $7.1M seems below market value for him.

so this is where this thread ended up.. sorry for littering @draft board.
thanks mains for joining

to make it at least a bit about draft ill say this

- looking at second tier NT contracts (Brown just didn't show enough consistency/ability as interior rusher/disruptor) it does make sense (of course it does, its BB;))

- i thought they might go for one of the top rushing DTs this year and possibly even trade Brown later

- with versatile Guy signed cheap through 2020 id prefer Shelton to stay as bigger/stronger NT and add one of many intriguing rushing DTs in 2019 Draft with one of top picks . to create more powerful & dynamic interior DL while still keeping some versatility

While Brown hasn't ever really been a disruptor, it seems to me that he's been a fairly consistent (and good) 2-gapping run-defender.

The trick, then, to upgrading over Brown is in finding a guy who can provide more rush without sacrificing the 2-gapping, run-defense aspect.

Meanwhile, I'd guess that there's probably a team or two out there that's gotten tired of getting gashed by runs up the middle and that would be willing to pay Brown $7M+/year to help put a stop to that, even if he only gives them 3 sacks a season.
