This comparison popped into my mind the other day, and at first I rejected it since Mayo is such a cerebral player, but it surprised me how similar their testing and production numbers turned out to be. Mayo had an extra few pounds, but Jefferson is an inch taller, and he jumped a foot farther in his broad jump and also surpassed Mayo in the 40. His agility numbers were much better, as well. They had almost the same number of tackles (236 vs 231) and TFLs (21 vs 26), but Jefferson actually had twice as many sacks (6.5 vs 13) and considerably more PD (1 vs 5). We could certainly use some more speed on defense.

The big question is mental makeup, but from the interviews I've seen with Jefferson, he is very open about his immaturity when he first arrived on campus, and he talks about how much he's grown and how the coaching staff really challenged him in his last year. He rose to the occasion and it sounds like he's really grown up a lot. I also don't agree with the reports of his on field instincts being poor; he moves decisively and he had 79 solo tackles last year in 12 games, vs 80 solo tackles for Mayo in 14 games his last year in college. Could he lead a defense in the same way? I'm not sure, and that's why I'd consider Jefferson in play at 43 / 63, rather than a top 10 sort of prospect like Mayo. Still, the numbers are fascinating:

To follow up on the Jefferson discussion, I figured I'd put in some clips of plays I thought showed some potential. Now, to be clear, he definitely has technique issues to clean up, so don't think I'm overselling him. He's very much a tier below Smith, Edmunds, Evans, LVE, etc. That doesn't mean he's a bad prospect, though; it just means he's probably not ready to be a day one starter, and thus doesn't earn a 1st round grade. The upside is there, however, and with the proper coaching I think he could emerge as a quality player. If he reaches his ceiling, he will be just as good as some of the players listed above, and potentially even better.

Negatives: sometimes his tackling isn't very secure (and other times it looks great). He gives up some big plays on occasion just by overshooting his spot. Too often finds himself covering grass rather than people, and doesn't disrupt throwing lanes -- even in a zone drop, players should pick up the threat in their zone, and not just drop to a landmark regardless of what's happening. The good news is that it looks like he's just trying to be careful to do what he's supposed to do within the scheme. He's not a big freelancer.

Nothing terribly special here, but this is what I mean about not freelancing too much. He's the spy against Mayfield. I like his patience not to overcommit and open up holes in the defense, as well as his ability to get back outside after a false step when he thinks Mayfield is going to run up the middle. He's controlled but still has solid closing speed.

Here he flows well to meet the running back before he can get north / south.

I like the blitz call. Nothing fancy, but you can see his closing speed on a designed blitz. I also clipped the next play, because I think it does a very good job of showing his plus range to the sidelines. Although it's true that his film leaves something to be desired, one of the positives is that tackles for short / no gain abound.

While he's not the biggest LB, he does a good job of evading blockers altogether. Nice work securing the tackle here. He does miss more tackles than I'd like, but usually it's when his form breaks down. Generally he's a secure tackler when he gets hands on a player.

Lastly, he doesn't really do much in terms of affecting this play, but the clip does highlight his quick, fluid backpedal. He's far more gifted laterally and in space than our current linebackers. Could be special with time.

Great stuff, and I agree that Jefferson right now is a notch below Edmunds, Roquan Smith, LVE & Evans but he is somebody who could absolutely help our defense and make clueless crap like Roberts hopefully expendable. He's probably worthy of being drafted closer to 43 than to 63, but would Bill take him at 43?

It's puzzling. Seems like there are a lot of good fits for the Pats with whom they've had no (known) pre-draft contact. Obviously, that doesn't necessarily mean squat, since they've selected prospects in the past for whom there was no contact we knew about until afterward.

Still ...

Watching the highlights of carter he looks like a better version of Roberts. A thumper who can cover a little better. Mid round pick

Great stuff @reamer. Jefferson def improved this year from an instincts pov, esp plays in the backfield. He seemed very confident diagnosing & just reacting overall to rpo's, designed runs, p/a & just in general behind the los.

That def helps but I love how loose he is. He really does have good cod to stick w/ & reroute pass catchers. Comfortable & confident which is big. He won't have many INTS but idc about that. I just want competence back there.

He'd be a terror blitzing up the middle.

Young guy so there's a lot of upside. I think some of his mistakes are correctable.

I love Carter. Didn't put up the #'s I wanted for measurables but he plays so fast.

Lorenzo? I’m not sure Roberts is the best comp there. For me, upside is Jamie Collins, downside is Dion Jordan or Marcus Smith.

Interesting. I'm not always big on their grading, but I do appreciate their stats. For someone who has problem dealing with blocks / navigating through traffic, LVE still makes an incredible amount of tackles for very little gain. I'm also not surprised to see Jefferson so high on that list. He looks like he's shot from a cannon on some plays.
