That's stupid money for Watkins
Bet some team coughs up at least a second if not a first for Martavius.

It's 30 fully gtd. I get your point. They will never see all that money. But even 80% of that is absurd. Solder will get 15m+ We can't compete. If he stays is based on loyalty and his kid ...

Of course we can compete.

There is no scenario in which the Pats really want Solder back but cant find a financial solution. For that their entire roster management and cap structure is too well built. There are enough ways to pay him. The issue is not Solder but how it affects down-the-line moves. There might be fewer in season pickups -- which have proven to be useful in the last couple of years. Also less depth in case of injuries. But the way BB and Caserio are running the show there is no scenario in which they literally dont have the money.

2014-2017 ................ WATKINS .... COOKS .... ADAMS
receptions/gm ............. 3.7 ............. 4.8 ............ 4.0
receiving yds/gm ......... 58.7 .......... 68.0 .......... 47.6
scrimmage yds/gm ...... 58.9 .......... 70.8 .......... 47.6
catch rate ..................... 55.5% ....... 65.3% ........ 59.5%
yards/catch ................. 15.9 ........... 14.1 ............ 11.9
career touchdowns ...... 25 ............. 28 .............. 26
2018 cap hit ................. ??? ........... $8.46M .... $10.5M
new contract APY ....... $16M ......... ??? ........... $14.5M

EDIT:

Robinson, $25M guaranteed
Watkins, $30M guaranteed

Correct
But a value is assigned to each positon based on the cap bet Solder hits 16 mill a year on his new contract and for that he can walk and we can build up the defense

I think they are lucky if they get anything higher than a fifth... a moody, inconsistent diva that is one strike away from a longer suspension.

Depends on how they value what they can get on the market / what they have on the roster. Sometimes if there is no other option then you have to pay up.

The mistake many are making is thinking about this in another one of those false dualities. Yes, 16M is a lot of money.. but you were prepared to spend lets say 13.5M on that player anyway. Suddenly we are talking only about 2.5M of actual value difference.

Is saving 2.5M per season worth the risk involved in trying to find another LT and strengthening a direct AFC competitor (Texans) at one of their positions of weakness ? What if your replacement is shyte and your entire expensive elite offense stutters half of the time because the OL needs too much help in protection ? How much value does this lose you alone ?

If Texans offers him 4 years 62m 32 fully gtd. How can we compete? If he stays he will leave a ton of cash on the table and that's it. Money wise they have more cap space by a wide margin.

Offer him more guaranteed money and done. (e.g. 48M total / 36M guaranteed). He only can leave cash on the table that is actually on the table and not something that is just dangled in front of him.

The Pats counter with 4 years, (fill in the blank APY), $33M fully-gtd. As long as his 2018 cap hit stays around $10M, the rest can be dealt with later.

Solder isn't stupid. In 2015, he signed for a $10M APY that was lower than a number of folks thought he'd get, so it was characterized as a "team-friendly deal." But, $19.89M of that $20M was fully-guaranteed.

KAREEM MARTIN:

“ Martin, like Murphy, is a big, versatile edge defender. He’s 6-foot-6, 272 pounds and can play standing up and with his hand in the ground. He also was a core special teamer with the Arizona Cardinals. He’s never been overly productive as a pro, but he did have 20 total pressures in 2017.”

Chiefs making moves
I think that's overpaying for Hitchens

We should be able to keep Rivers for 3 or 4 mill a year

Trent Murphy may get a deal in the 8 mill a year range.
I want in on Trent Murphy or let's trade for some pass rush

The Chiefs are basically out of cap $ without a first round pick. I’m not sure that defense could keep us under 45.

That Watkins move is just so odd from a team building perspective.
