Browns trade Shelton to Patriots

We just might have fixed the single biggest issue that prevented us from winning the SB but the trade sucks because your friend ranted about him a few times. Ok then..
The same way you are implying that we fixed the DL without knowing, Im implying the opposite. I have the same basis for the information, plus the evidence of a guy I respect.

Feel free to disagree with me, i hope you are right. This is where i stand until proven otherwise

I’m not going to judge this trade until I see what he does on the field. I will say that we feel the DL is the most pressing area were addressing so far, when you consider the failed Bennett trade.

Kony Ealy and Barkevious Mingo were thefts too if I remember right

Don't think you remember quite right. Mingo was interesting as an athletic freak, with the question as to whether or not you could find a place for such a tweener as that.

Ealy COULD HAVE been a steal. He showed flashes of brilliance, flashes of laziness. At the time of the trade, he was a...possibility. Nothing more.

This guy isn't a tweener, certainly, and is there anything about his attitude or uneven play that should concern us?

I like Shelton. I could be wrong but I think he could play a little nose tackle. I think he may of had a down year this year but I could be wrong

Yes. For one, i respect the knowledge of this guy a great deal. Secondly, he is an avid Browns fan, for quite some time.

Does he fully understand Shelton's role? There's a good chance your pal doesn't think he makes enough impact plays for a 12th overall pick and is thus biased against him. Fans very often hold the price paid to acquire a player against the player (we do this here, too). The Pats are not using the 12th pick to acquire him. He played nose for one of the best run defenses in the league last year. He's 24, and has had 3 coordinators in 3 years, including moron and human garbage can Gregg Williams. Here he'll play a role, and I'd wager play it very well. He's also a proud young man who has overcome some major personal tragedy so I'm pulling for him.

You respect your friend's football knowledge or BB's more?

The difference here is that many people knew and liked Shelton during the draft process and actually looked at his college footage. Whereas your opinion is based on a Browns fan giving an opinion on a football player on a team that went 1-31 in the last two years..

We essentially got him for free in terms of draft value. It is a low risk, high reward scenario... not sure this trade can be topped by anything really..

The impression I’m getting is that he was a non factor as a pass rusher.

Don’t love the sound of that

Major run-stopper added to a DL that couldn't stop a minor nose-bleed in 2017, much less a good ground game. Also, a block-eater who should make life much easier for Brown, Flowers, Wise and company to do some damage in the backfield.

It will be a really tough decision whether or not to pick up his option though.

Does anyone know what the cap number would likely be in the 5th year?

It would be a renegotiation to a longer contract.

Out here in NE Ohio, Shelton was a run stuffing nose tackle who excelled in the 3-4 defense. When the Browns switched to a 4-3, he wasn't as effective. When on his game, Shelton will occupy 2 blockers, allowing other D linemen to get to the QB. Not saying he will be that effective, but Shelton has the potential to be another Butch Wilfork or, for earlier followers of the Pats, Ted Washington. Both of them were solid against the run and generally occupied 2 blockers. It remains to be seen on the field how this turns out, but at least it's a good move on paper.

Makes sense to me..

And I’m not sure we really need any safeties
Well, it’s true that Safety isn’t a dire need NOW. However, let’s not forget that both D-Mac & Chung are both age 30 & have expiring contracts arising in 2019-2020. Chung’s contract is extremely mangable, but McCourty will either likely have to restructure or likely become a cap casualty. We know BB is always proactive & not reactive.

Patrick Chung

Devin McCourty

Go read the comment you hastily responded to (the first one).
