Malcolm Butler Mega Thread

I'm well aware of it. I've never bought Lawyers exit was THE reason for a 31-0 loss. A bit of a distraction sure but it was so overblown
No. It was quite a bit more than a "bit of a distraction." And if that's with the Butler fiasco denialists believe, that actually is pretty telling.

Benching Malcolm Butler was another stroke of genius from Bill Belichick ... in theory

It is a pretty interesting theory that smells like it might be going into the right direction. The most important sentence in there is this:

In short the author explains on a schematic level that this was almost the inverse gameplan that BB is famous for with the Giants. He wanted to avoid the Eagles gashing them slowly on the ground, grinding the game out leaving Brady on the sideline.

Go and read it if you have time.. it gives an interesting perspective into what might have been the motivation for this weird gameplan.

I would please ask anyone to stay on topic and dont turn this into another Butler thread. This thread is for the discussion of that potential gameplan and not to whine about BB stealing a title from you.

The other thing that gets pointed out again is that while Rowe said that he didnt know about the Butler benching until before the kickoff we know now not only that the captains knew days ahead that Butlers role got minimized:

And this article points out that Rowe even practiced with the first team defense instead of Butler the entire time:

So can we at least stop propagating this the team got shocked before kickoff narrative ?

Rowe is quoted as saying he didn't know until just before kickoff. Saying Rowe practiced with the first team is not contradicting that as there are defenses with three CBs.

its an interesting article, but confusing why the author thinks 6 defensive back packages invite pass plays. Tradional thinking is that invites the offense to run.

Obviously the plan didn’t work, but why no adjustments? The only second half adjustment was subbing Bademosi for Jordan Richards. Bad game plan and bad execution.

Yup. This 100%

Nope.

Eric lee started. Is this surprising? Yep. Was it “shocking” distracting the team? Nope.

What drama queens. Butler knows what he did and it was selfish.

Please. Two completely different situations.

This was a brilliant plan by Belichick.

Absolutely, let Foles throw all over you, but don't let Blount run for a TD!]

After all, Jordan Richards is a much better tackler than Malcolm Butler!!!

umm, did you see philly’s d? what did you think about the offense’s unbelievably slugginst start again in a super bowl in any easy offensive era like this?
You are hell bent on convincing people that the poor start by the offense and apparently brady sucking up in the 1st half is the bigger issue than BB not even trying his 2nd CB all game. If you have made up your mind in this direction then there is no point to discuss further.

Philly's defense allowed 18.4 points a game during the season. They allowed 10 to a good Falcons team and 7 to a good Vikings team.

They allowed 30+ points only twice - once against the Rams, who had one of the best offenses in football, and then in the SB against the Patriots.

The Patriots scored 33 on them. The Pats didn't just score FGs. They scored four touchdowns. This was the most points in regulation the Patriots have ever scored in a Super Bowl.

They should have had four more points minimum (botched FG and PAT). I personally think instead of 3 points early on, they should have had 10 (a FG and a TD). But still. 33 points against that defense is tremendous.

Nah. Their pass d was mediocre at best, i spoke about this in the pregame threads and said brady will probably throw 60 times because of it. It slowed their rush, cox removed as predicted, and their wide-swinging one trick pony pas rushers would do little.

Timmy Jernigan is still a wild disappointment as a 1st rd pick who does nothing in games, which is something i also stated. Their d had a 100.5 passer rating against te’s/rb’s.I would have gone white/burkhead all night in 2 back sets.

Here is a note: the best qb they faced all year was alex smith and they lost. They should have lost to atlanta, too. The ball went right through julio jones’s hands.

ATL didnt allow 41 pts and score 33 pts and lose. Its very logical to blame atl's offense and poor playcalling in that game.

Now you're trolling. Ryan, Newton, Brees, Watson, roethlisberger are all better than Alex smith

Edit. Nevermind thought you were talking about pats schedule

Was talking regular season. Forgot about brees. Newton? Not a big fan. Inaccurate, huge ego, always dinged up,etc.

WHy do people run around saying people are “trolling”? I watched jared goff march up and down the field on them. So, no, it’s not trolling.

Their lbs and secondary are mediocre.

Are you implying that Richards or Chung is equivalent to Rodney Harrison? Do you remember Harrison?
Geesh.... wow. I am of course implying nothing of the sort.

It was a huge surprise, and it was a very unorthodox move by the coach.

Put your big hitter safety on a #1 outside WR? Put your best one-one-one defender back 15 yards in a zone?

Why? Because Dungy would not know what hit him.

Brilliant, and highly unexpected.

May BB was trying too hard for brilliance again and didn't just scheme well enough to get by.

Bzzzzzt. Philly's defense was outstanding all season. New England nearly doubled the points that Philly gave up on average. They throttled Atlanta and Minnesota, but Brady absolutely lit them up. Apart from kicking mistakes, they would have hung 37 on them. The Pats piled up 613 yards of offense. That should never ever ever ever happen against Philly.

Not at all. I am simply pointing out brady was slow to start again, as collinsworth points it out on my tv sceen, and both d’s were subpar.

Shootouts break out all over the nfl every sunday. Foles came throwing dimes, brady did not. Just a fact, dude.

YES they did get stupid overnight! That's the problem! How could they have done that to their team?! It's maddening!

Well.....I think that's not logical, but ok.

Philly had never faced a GOAT and this potent of an offense all year. Their lbs snd dbs were awful vs te’s and rb’s all year.

Yes. They were emotionally dead that week. I'm honestly shocked that any long-term fan would not know this.

They hate their coach.
I was 100% behind dumping Milloy from the get go. I argued right here on this board with probably 75% of the posters.
Milloy was no longer even a good player. Had slowed down big-time. You could see it the previous season and in preseason. Was the right move by BB.
I'm reserving my judgement on Butler.
Just not enough facts to have an opinion one way or the other.

Is that what people after the game against the Bills would have said if the FG went in instead ?

lolol it's stuff like this that makes you realize how dumb a sport football really is, when the line between genius and moron is a few degrees of an angle off a kicker's foot

I mean, that and a guy who played well in 5 meaningless games for a bad team at the end of the season getting the largest contract in the history of the sport

Well.....I think that's not logical, but ok.

Of course it is not logical. Our d gave up 13 points in sb 46 until the last 2 mins while brady and the offense fiddled around for the 2nd half to even be able to get into fg range for a fg attempt.

Our fans will do anything to place blame at the feet of just bb. Tony mazz and felger have done a number on some of our fans.
