Malcolm Butler Mega Thread

You mean an emergency like the defense getting destroyed in the Super Bowl? If there was ever a time to say "our defense can't stop them, let's send our second best corner out there" that was the time. He shouldn't have even dressed if they were going to be that stubborn on it.
He didn't want to make him inactive 90min before the game and cause a circus.

I'm well aware of this article.

My overall point is everyone is killing BB for being the same coach for 18 years and now he has a player whos behavior has been so egregious you don't want him to be BB anymore
He played him on 97% of defensive snaps for the year and completely benched him for the Super Bowl while still dressing him and not using the roster spot for someone else.

Belichick's never done something like this. The worst he's done, is bench Edelman for a quarter.... in a game he lost.

Yeah Belichick deserves blame for this.

It was Welker.

Yes. You can blame BB for enforcing team rules.

More blame should put on Malcolm for completely f-ing up his career and screwing over his teammates as the other 51 did just fine

Oh.... he didn't want to cause a circus....

You had a star CB who the whole world knows a Super Bowl hero crying his eyes out during the national anthem. You have the player covering for him saying he just found out right before the national anthem that he was starting. You have a former player saying the locker room was divided on instagram and you have current (a defensive star at that) and former players liking that post. All anybody is talking about in the media is that Butler was benched and nobody knows why. You have the media hounding the team and getting weird evasive answers. You have players deflecting and looking pissed off. And this is going to follow Belichick around the rest of his career.

Some job avoiding a circus. Way to punish the whole team to make a point to one player.

Fortunately, everything went smoothly after the team had seen dejected Butler crying during the national anthem.

It was Belichick's decision not to play him, not Butlers. 51 players were punished because Belichick felt like control of his team was important than winning a Super Bowl.

Sorry unless Butler punched coach or was got with hard drugs, hit a women, or has pending felony charges on him, this decision is on Belichick and he owns the outcome of this. Because I'm pretty sure if you asked Butler to make the decision, he'd be playing. And we'd have a better chance to win.

I'm talking about 90min before the game.

You don't think he anticipated fallout? Do you think he cares?

Oh.... so all the players pissed off on the sideline and guys like Rowe had to deal with his decision being blindsided by starting wasn't causing a circus.

I don't think you really get how much something like this hurts Belichick's legacy. Defensive guru head coach drops 41 points in Super Bowl. Coach makes decision to bench starting CB in game where his defense can't get a stop.

His cat died.

If I was bored I would go back to various Steelers threads and cross reference the people who were calling out Tomlin for running a circus with the folks in here who were ok with Butler doing whatever he wants and still play just because of winning.

Amazing how many opportunistic people are around but I guess given the times we live in I should not be surprised. Seems like a certain segment of people nowadays has no issue sacrificing values or principle for whatever victory they can find.

Starting is overstated. He was playing 50 snaps anyway.

BBs legacy is fine. If you want to think less of him feel free.

Who cares? BB has shown he doesn't.

Also, so they will talk for one more minute before making him a unanimous HoF selection anyway?

Absurd..

Dumb take. The Steelers had guys taking videos in the locker room, star RB's screaming all week about his contract, QB's throwing coaches under the bus. All that was public. Whatever Butler did, nobody really knows.

And yeah it's sports. Winning is the only thing that matters. When Belichick's legacy is written about in the next ten, twenty, thirty years.... nobody's going to say "oh he had conviction to bench a player that caused an issue". It's going to be "he cost his team a Super Bowl and the chance to tie the record for most Super Bowls and wasted one of the great performances by his all time great QB to make a point about control in his locker room".

He definitely cares about his legacy. He's a football historian. He knows what records he's breaking and he knows who the class he is compared to is. He's not stupid.

And it goes beyond that. A couple years after Belichick retires people are going to say "is he the greatest coach of all time". And someone's going to say "well Vince Lombardi and George Halas didn't cost their team a Super Bowl by benching a Super Bowl hero because he was late for a flight".

What values? He reached out for a guy booked for drunk driving when we were short on WRs.

Hey, if you think it was worth losing the Super Bowl because Butler missed curfew, good for you. I prefer Bill act like a football coach instead of a petty hall monitor and do what it takes to win, like his job description reads, but that's just me. Sleep easy tonight knowing that sixth Lombardi wasn't worth it because now, thank God, Malcolm truly understands he can't be late to practice, and isn't that the most important thing?

I get how people are sad and pissed off. I get it.

For 18 years he has hard and fast rules and expectations. Malcolm knew them. All 52 knew them.

For whatever reason, he decided he did not want to adhere to them anymore.

At the end of the day pride got in the way of our HC’s clear mind.

The team deserved better - The offsense deserved better - Tom definitely deserves better.

I don’t like to believe anything I read but I feel Tom avoiding Matt P’s arm before the press conferences tells a tale.

I love Brady I love this team I hope number 6 is not far away

Yeah, and no one had the guts to tell him that 90 minutes earlier, they were all "You see, your cat... it went up on the roof..."
Please.
