I have no idea what Butler's illness was 4-5 days ago, but an illness that gets you admitted for iv fluids, probably was serious especially if it was the flu. It is also entirely possible that BB did not allow Butler to interact with the rest of the team for fear of getting other players sick all week. Lack of practice, and being physically not 100% is an easy reason to not have him play. Just imagine the uproar if Butler got injured while playing with the flu.

I suspect that the main reason why Butler was dressed was because he would be the replacement for an injury. BB and MP probably felt that 100% Rowe was better than a less than 100% Butler. I guess we will never know.

Except everyone said he practiced with the team and with the packages they ran. He was only informed right before the game started that he wasn't going to play on Defense. The problem is his 100% replacement was playing terribly. So why not put in your 80% player (if he truly was) and see if he can pull something out. Not even trying when you are getting walked all over is what is head scratching.

The offensive dominance we saw in the 2nd half, led by the Football God himself, was a thing of beauty. Especially considering it was done without Cooks.

Too bad I won't be able to watch any of the highlights. Way too maddening since I can't help but think about how it was pissed away & out of Brady's control.

How dense are you ? I am not comparing anything but saying that BB has rules and if Butler broke one of those then he deserved the same kind of benching that players in the past got. Doesnt matter if it is the preseason, a Browns game or the friggin SB.

You are arguing against one of the fundamental pillars of the entire Patriots program.



Again argue about that all you want but it is all in character for BB.

I agree with most of what you're saying but I think you make an exception for the Super Bowl. Bench him for a series or something like with Welker. Don't let your adherence to the 'fundamental pillar' of the Patriot Way cost you a title, especially when it's clear as the game goes along that you need help in the secondary.

This game was lost by the defense, coaching and execution. And as being discussed on several threads, the benching of Butler is a big what if.

There has to be more to this Butler Benching then we know. Just has to be. I mean no one freaking knew till game time? Just doesn't make any sense . There just has to be more.

The guy is a freaking legend in boston. And BB may not be sentimental, but he was still the second best corner on the team.

Maybe we will find out more.

Nobody knows if Butler broke a rule. Butler said “they gave up on me” - might suggest a rule was not the issue.

I was watching the game with a few people and when the pats went up by a point no one cheered because we knew full well the D was coming back on the field.

honestly, I prayed for an onside kick at that point because I knew if the defense came back on the field that lead we had would be gone.

The thing is that we dont know what was the cause of all of it. If we ever find out we can then talk about it being an overreaction or not. But until then I will give BB the benefit of the doubt because he has more than earned that.
