This fake reverse was my favorite of the Titans game. Presnap Gronk is in motion left to right. Brady fakes handoff to Lewis, fakes another handoff to Cooks who had run backwards from the outside right on the line. Gronk pulls to the left to block from the left. Brady then passes to Lewis on the right.

What's the history of this? When have the Patriots used it? What new wrinkles did they put on it? Am I naive in saying the timing there was a work of art?

(By new wrinkles I mean just ways their execution is a cut above. Like in Steelers playoff game last year with the flea flicker - Lewis ran way further into the line to really sell the play, more than most backs in flea flickers. And the Solder cut block in the double pass.)

I can't really remember plays from previous years, but they ran a similar concept against the Saints in week 2. Instead of Lewis, it was Burkhead. Approx 0:33 second mark of the video below. At 4:15 is another one I really like. If Cooks runs Hogan's route there, it's probably a TD.

Thanks - you have a great memory!

I remember this play type vividly because it didn't work twice in critical games in our past. I found both of them on YouTube.

The first offensive play in the 2008 Super Bowl:

If Maroney could hang onto the ball he had great blocking ahead of him. However the Giants DL made the pass go awry, which would happen all game.

2011 Division loss vs. Jets:

NOTE: David Harris makes the pick and looks to have a clear path to the end zone. He was so slow even then Algie Crumpler makes up 10 yards to bring him down! The Jets wound up missing a FG on the drive, but it was a harbinger of tough sledding all game.

So I'm not fond of that playcall in general, but if you can hit it, you can gain big yardage.

Hope they choose the best play to win and not some Rube Goldberg play so Mcdaniels can show off to his suitors. That said, there is a place for gadget plays in the playoffs and they are fun to watch when they work.

In past years I have begged that we retire this play. It almost never works. It is a struggle just to get the pass off. I have said we needed better oline or a mobile qb to pull it off. And the few times it worked it went for like a maximum of 10 yards. After seeing it fail so many times, I think it is more of a poor reflection on the Titans than it being such a good play. I bet the long bomb to Slater would've worked against the Titans as well lol.

And yes, I was ready to crucify Josh for getting cute lol.

This isn't the div loss vs NYJ...

This play would have just been an end-around; a reverse is when the runner hands it off to another player running in the opposite direction.
