We're On To The Titans

I expect that early in this game they dont play as well as they should, they seem to need some time to get going after bye weeks. But I do expect the Pats to win. But then again ....remember that Jets game a while back......

“Come here, Logan.”

You don't **** around in the playoffs.

Ever.
Could not agree anymore. Plus they need to start getting some wind In their sails heading to the AFC Championship game. You can’t just turn things on and off in the playoffs. Some form of continuity within the players to hang their hat on

Bet Jason McCourty is upset that he missed out on playing with Tenn against his brother.

Of course, he signed with the Browns, so clearly he had given up all hope of ever seeing the postseason long ago.

Getting back on track. I got to thinking about the defensive game plan. The first thing you do when you start thinking about your defensive game plan is to try to assume what the opposition is going to try and do to you to win the game.

In this case its quite apparent that the Titans will look to 1. establish dominance at the LOS. 2. run the ball and kill the clock. 3. Use Mariota to attack the edges of the defense with with bootlegs and read options. 4. Take a few shots deep with their rookie speed WR to loosen up the secondary to free up shorter crossers. 5. Get Delanie Walker open.

On their side the Pats will do everything in their power to, 1. keep Mariota in the pocket, so we will be using the very unsatisfying slow edge rush this week. . 2. Look to see stunts and blitzes to attack the middle of the D and force Mariota out to the DE's. 3. Control the run game. That doesn't mean you shut it down completely. They aren't going to beat you with a run game, but have run blitzes ready so they can't control the clock. 4. Gets some Freakin' TO's for a change. 5. Limit the number of "big plays" 25+ yds and keep them under 20pts

On the offensive side of the ball. I also think it's simple. They are going to want to conrol the clock and thus shorten the game. We should speed up the pace on offense, and make it difficult for them to communicate.

Lebeau does some really nice things with his myriad of zone blitz schemes. It is stupid to think he is just going to run the same stuff he ran in Pittsburgh. You don't get to coach in this league into your 80's by not being able to adjust. When you look at the KC game you can see a number of great schemes where the Titans were able to get guys free runs at the QB, while only committing 4 men to the rush. Schemes I wouldn't mind see the Pats run once in a while

That being said, there isn't much that Lebeau can throw at Brady that he hasn't seen before. But because its not easy to pick all this up, there WILL be a few times where either the protection or Brady doesn't read it right. What you have to do is make them pay dearly on the majority of the times the protection picks it up and make the right reads.

Lebeau has traditionally been pretty much zone behind those blitzes with 3 deep and 4 under. You have to think though, much like the Steelers did, he'll have to throw more man, or tighter underneath zones to squeeze the Pats underneath game. As an example think back to Rex Ryan's overload zone blitzes and 3 man rushes with FIVE under and 3 deep of his hey day with the Jets from 2010-12. These proved to be very confusing to Brady for a while.

By going with a fast paced no huddle you can take advantage of one of the Pats great strengths, which is being able to make wholesale substitutions on the fly during a no huddle operation. We are great at it. The opposition usually isn't. They usually end up in a wrong personnel package against the right formation and communication breaks down. This is a BIG advantage of being at home.

If the Pats do that and execute well, then I can see them putting the scoring pressure on the Titans, and unlike KC, they aren't going to let up in the 2nd half.

Just a few thoughts off the top of my head. What do you think the game plan should be?

I think we need to pump the brakes on the jet game coming up in every post like it’s a likelihood. We have had 11 byes and we are 10-1 in those divisional games. (Then 7-3 in afccg and 5-2 in SBs btw) so that was an anomaly not a cautionary tale.

Wow that’s actually a pretty important stat.

11 byes
10-1 divisional
7-3 Afccg
5-2. Sb

22-6 post season record when getting the bye.
Win it all this year and we will have gone to the SB 75% of the time we have a bye and win it 50% of the Times we have the bye.

This is also our 7th 1 seed (03,07,10,11,14,16,17)

And in the previous 6 we went to the SB 5 of 6 and won 3 of them.
Post season record as a 1 seed 13-3.

Did anyone see that hit on Kelce? Surprised there was no flag and I think that was border line dirty hit, sure looked like the defender aimed with his head....

Eagles have to play the defending NFC champions/NFL MVP

Vikings have to play Drew Brees & the Saints, who already beat them this year

Steelers have to play the #1 defense in the NFL, who already destroyed them in Pittsburgh

We play the Titans.

I'm so scared...it's all bad...we have no chance...the sky!!!! It's falling!!!! We're doomed!! I knew it!!! It's ALWAYS ALL BAD!!! Every year...terror...think I'll become a Jete fan

At least as a Jete fan when they say "This sucks" it'll be true.

Titans have an "any given Sunday" chance but if the Patriots play anything close to their capabilities this should be an easy victory.

Titans had a -22 Point differential for the year and really struggled to generate offense. Their big chance is if they are able to sustain long drives by running outside, making a bunch of 3rd and shorts and keeping the Pats offense off the field.

Too bad for them we're playing on Saturday.

If Burkhead, White and Lewis are all healthy enough to play, I can foresee us paper cutting them to death with the no huddle. 12 personnel. Honestly can't see them stopping us, unless our interior line has an off day.

If its a comfortable blowout in the 2nd half I'd pull Gronk and anyone who's banged up or could use less of a workload

Nice thought but BB won't do it. Particularly in a playoff game. He should but he won't.

Yea hopefully atleast Gronk, that's our season right there no sense having em out there if the game is officially out of reach

My game plan is simple and I can sum it up in one sentence. Make them beat you, don't beat yourself.

Usually in the divisional round you need to take some risk and let it hang out a bit more to win. Not in this case. This Titans team is overall average and so I favor a low risk style of play. This means limit your deep shots to Cooks and plays which can turn the ball over. If the Pats have zero turnovers and a low amount of penalties water will seek it's level over 60 minutes.

I would keep balanced and stay with the run (even though they have a good run D) unless it was doing absolutely nothing. I would pass short and to the sideline. Only attack the middle of the field when it is Gronk 1 on 1 or Cooks gets multiple steps on a guy and gets WIDE open. Do not try to fit the ball into a window 50 yards down field even if a window is there. Lots of Gronk for 15/20 yard passes as they can't cover TEs well and lots of safe passes to Lewis and Burkhead.

Don't hold the ball long often. It will give their DL, which is pretty good, a chance to make big game changing plays. Get the ball out. When you hold it do it only with play action and if the look is not there go instantly to the check down or throw it away. Run lots of no huddle but don't speed it up unless you have to. A slow no huddle is fine too.

If Brady goes something like 2 TDs 0 Ints/fumbles 20/30 for 230 yards it's just fine by me. Only take risk on offense when given a great chance to blow it open and the risk is low.

On defense make them pass to beat you. Simple as that. Rush slow but surely. Limit their RBs and don't let their QB run for first downs on 3rd and 8. Take away Delanie Walker and just play smart in zone. Keep it all in front of you. They need to get into the redzone to win and more than once. Play smart in that part of the field and don't let any breakdowns happen or lose contain.

Do this until you get ahead. Once you get the chance step up their throat and increase the risk to try to blow them out so no miracles happen. If you succeed you can sit Gronk and a few other key guys.

Our corners should be stuck to there WRs like glue man on man stack the box and double Walker on obvious passing downs

Any of a number of bad things can change the entire complexion of a game - a safety on the first play, guy breaking a TD run on the first play from scrimmage, interception on the first drive, etc, but then again there can also be 59-0 so I am cautiously optimistic.
