1) Passing yards allowed 2017

1st 6 games---321.0 ypg

Last 10 games 207.1 ypg

2) Points allowed first 4 games 32.0 ppg

Points allowed last 12 games 14.0 ( take out 21 pt given up by offense pick 6/2 fumble recoveries for TD) and defense allowed 12.25 ppg

3) Patriots have been 2-2 or worse in the Brady/Belichick era 6 times ( 2001, 2003, 2005, 2012, 2016, 2017) and won the Super Bowl 3 of those previous 5 times….

4) Over the entire season…Pats were #2 in points scored ( behind NO) and 5th in points allowed with 296 ( which includes 21 allowed by offense ) behind Phil (295) Jax (268) Chargers (272) and Minn (252).

5) The only times previously that the Pats have been in the top 5 in both points scored and points allowed were:

2004, 2007, 2016 - and they made it to the Super Bowl all three times and won it twice .. ( Past performance is no guarantee yada yada..)

6) Early on I posted how this Patriots team reminded me of the 1976 Steelers team. That team was a two time defending Super Bowl champ who got off to a 1-4 start giving up all sorts of passing yards and then the defense clamped down and they won 9 in a row, losing to Oakland in the playoffs only because both running backs ( Franco Harris and Rocky Bleier) were both injured in the first playoff game… This was after the infamous Ray Hamilton roughing the passer call that would have had the ’76 Pats facing a decimated Steeler team.

My gut tells me that this defense ( barring any more injuries) will step it up even more in the playoffs and hold opponents under 20 points……

7) In the playoffs in BB era, the team is 20-1 when scoring 22 points or more ( only loss was AFCCG to Indy 38-34).

Team is 23-2 when scoring 20 points or more ( loss were Indy and to Jets 28-21).

8) In the playoffs in the BB era:

The Pats are 12-8 when giving up 20 points or more ( I know, give up a lot of points and you lose)

The Pats are 12-1 when giving up 17 points or less…(Loss was SB 42..need I say more)

There’s the sweet spot. Keep the opponent at 17 or under and chances are great…

9) In the Belichick/Brady era, the Pats are +2462 in point differential in the regular season, roughly 9 points per game more than opponents and +222 or plus 6.5 in the playoffs…. It drops to 8.7 if you factor in Cassel's 2008 and the first 4 games last year when Brady was given his involuntary vacation.

It drops to 8.5 pts if you include 2000 which was a -62 differential, the last pre Brady year..

10) When Belichick was hired, the Pats overall record was 40 games under .500. Now they are 103 games over .500 mark…………………………..

11) (bonus) Since the beginning of 2016 (playoffs included) Pats are 30-5, while Cleveland is 1-31.

Since 2015, Browns are 4-44. To count back 44 losses for the Pats, you have to go back to 2005. The Patriots are 158-44 over that time period ( playoffs excluded).

I don't know how this got buried, but these are outstanding stats.

I don't know think this factoid was necessarily worthy of its own thread, so I will place it here.

Just a gentle reminder of how good we have it as fans of the Patriots.

Current streak of consecutive seasons making the playoffs:
9 -- New England Patriots

4 -- Pittsburgh Steelers

3 -- Kansas City Chiefs

2 --Atlanta Falcons

1 -- Buffalo Bills
1 -- Carolina Panthers
1 -- Jacksonville Jaguars
1 -- Los Angeles Rams
1 -- Minnesota Vikings
1 -- New Orleans Saints
1 -- Philadelphia Eagles
1 -- Tennessee Titans

0 -- all twenty other teams

The Patriots have also gone to the playoffs in 14 of the last 15 seasons, and 15 of the last 17.

In both cases when the team missed the playoffs they finished with a regular season record that gave them a tie for their division, but missed out on the postseason on playoff tiebreaker rules.

The Pats current playoff streak is as long as the cumulative totals of all other teams that have gone to the postseason back-to-back or better.

Going further back the Patriots have been to the playoffs in 19 of the last 24 NFL seasons.

All this was accomplished despite playing in the era of the salary cap and free agency, where that amount of continued success was not supposed to be possible.

The Patriots have also gone to the playoffs in 14 of the last 15 seasons, and 15 of the last 17.
17 of the last 21, 18 of the last 23, if you want to go back even more.

In both cases when the team missed the playoffs they finished with a regular season record that gave them a tie for their division, but missed out on the postseason on playoff tiebreaker rules.
And one of the two times they missed, they were 11-5. I don't have to time to research (sucks when work gets in the way) but I have to believe that 11-5 teams make the playoffs over 90% of the time....

THE most useless stat of 2017:

New Jersey Jete 5-11.

In both cases when the team missed the playoffs they finished with a regular season record that gave them a tie for their division, but missed out on the postseason on playoff tiebreaker rules.

A simpler version of this statement: since Tom Brady became the starter in 2001, the Patriots have not played a regular-season game while out of playoff contention.

3) Patriots have been 2-2 or worse in the Brady/Belichick era 6 times ( 2001, 2003, 2005, 2012, 2016, 2017) and won the Super Bowl 3 of those previous 5 times…

Also 2014, so 4 of previous 6.

The Pats are 12-8 when giving up 20 points or more ( I know, give up a lot of points and you lose)
.
Right or wrong, this helps to justify my desire to play teams like JAX or MIN, as opposed to PIT or NO.

Not saying my belief is what’s correct, just that this is why I’d prefer to take my chances with the offense scoring 10 per half, rather than the defense still playing well and giving up 20 pts.

Pats were 3-1 after 4 in 2016.
