Undaunted by adversity, Patriots' Jones ready for prime time

Jones’ knack for being in the right place at the right time has earned an appropriate nickname from his teammates.

“Every day he gets in the game or every time he gets an opportunity to make a play, he makes it. that’s why I call him, ‘Big Play J,’” Duron Harmon said. “It seems like every day or every game that we got, he’s making some kind of impact play to help the team be successful.”

2 end zone passes batted down in game 2...
Game-winning pass batted down against Tampa...
Pick and contributed to a safety against the Chargers...
Grabbed the muffed punt against Denver...
Covering the receiver on the Derek Carr pick and the forced fumble at the 5...

Like Duron Harmon says, good things happen when the play comes to JJ. He's...

There is a much to like here. When players like Harmon & Jones make high impact plays, it just makes everything easier. I know Harmon is basically a starter, but there is no arguing DM is ahead of him. And Jones has two guys ahead of him...

This secondary is playing the way Preseason 19-0ers thought they'd play.

I want to see Gilmore shut down Alshon Jeffrey in the Superbowl.
Remember Marty said Jeffrey was soft and a ****y.

An interesting comment in the article - "Jones is the fastest player on the team".

I would have guessed Cooks.

I suspect that Jones, Cooks and Dorsett are the fastest trio the Patriots have ever fielded. Coming out of college, their measurables were astonishingly close:

height range 5'9 1/8"-5'9 6/8"
weight range 185-189
40 yd dash 4.28-4.31
Vertical 36"-37"
Broad 10'00"-10'03"

But Cooks and Dorsett were 1st-round picks, and Jones was undrafted. We're lucky to have him.

He's another example of a guy who stuck because of special teams play, then got his chance. He barely made the 2016 roster, and probably got the nod over LeBlanc and Roberts for his ST contributions.

The team should have found a way to keep Leblanc as he's become a solid NFL corner.

I like the “Big Play J"

The best news is he's trending to “every play JJ“. Re-watched the OAK game and it was just unbelievable JJ performance. Man of the match IMO. Always around the ball, great run support, strong tackling, also good in slants & quick short coverages where he suffers usually.

Here one example of Seth Roberts abuse time (JJ second from bottom)

Here blitz missile we asked for . speed shows and its deadlier than w Butler

JJ from slot (bottom) . amazing closing speed

Good: having the best 50 yard dash time.
Better: acceleration time from dead stop thru 5 to 10 yards
Best: transition acceleration time from running direction A to break left/break right direction B

One of the beat reporters did a piece about a month ago in which he asked the guys on the team who they thought was the fastest Pats player. Dorsett and one or two other guys were mentioned, but Jones, Cooks and Slater got virtually all of the top votes.

The Pats also have a couple of fairly fast guys on the PS, too. CB Ryan Lewis had a 4.37/40, and WR/KR Riley McCarron posted a 4.41/40 to go along with a 6.59 3-cone (just edging Edelman's mark of 6.61).

EDIT:

After further review ...

Gilmore .. 4.40/40 ... 3.94 ss ... 6.61 3-cone
Bademosi .. 4.39/40 .. 4.10 ss .. 6.96 3-cone
Rowe .. 4.45/40 .. 3.97 ss ... 6.70 3-cone

ONE MORE EDIT:
Enber .. 4.04 ss ... 6.59 3-cone

I haven't filled in the pre-draft testing numbers for everybody yet, but Gilmore, D-Lew, Cooks and Dorsett all posted sub-1.55 10-yd splits. Jon Jones posted a 1.47 split.

LeBlanc had a decent first season with the Bears, but he's been demoted this season, apparently. Has 123 D-snaps so far in 2017, down from 695 in 2016. And he's still not contributing much on their ST.
