This is when it's nice to have the league's most influential owner.

It seemed clear that should be the case - current coaches/GMs deciding new rules make sense, enacting punishments clearly does not.

Also, don't forget get that Kraft is the league's most influential owner

They need some clarification on the rules going forward is all. It sounds like we stretched what is considered acceptable the aggressive way we approach everything and obviously, some definition is needed.

why on earth would they let your rivals determine your punishment anyway?

i bet bill has tape and other evidence of most teams taping the pats defensive signals..just begging for the polian and co to make a big deal of this!

In some spheres this is called conflict of interest.. the best way to proceed is for them to recuse themselves from the whole issue.

Yea but if Polian and those other morons tell him we're guilty and to take away what ever draft pick he'll likely do it.

The Commish doesn't strike me as the type of guy who can be played or influenced.

Goodell is still in new to the commissioner's job. If he is seen as favoring the Krafts, it will undermine him down the road, when he has to negotiate a new revenue sharing formula as part of the next CBA negotiations.

I think he is MORE likely to give the Patriots a serious punishment than another team which did the same things.

IF the Patriots have been caught red handed, I would expect them to lose a sixth or a seventh, plus a fine for the club and a suspension for some demonstratively involved individual.

For any other club, I would have expected a seventh at the very worst, and more likely just a fine and suspension.

If Goodell doesn't hold the Patriots to a higher standard, he will regret it.

Moreover, if Kraft actually owned Goodell (which he doesn't) he would be smart enough to tell Goodell not to give him any favors. Kraft will need to call in his markers when the next revenue sharing agreement is negotiated, and anything he does to strengthen Goodell now will increase the value of those markers then.

Yep. If the evidence is as damning as the media would like you to believe, a likely outcome would be Goodell fining the Patriots a decent amount of money, or maybe taking away a late draft choice, and issuing a statement that going forward, such actions will result in the loss of the teams first-round draft choice.

That oughtta clear up the matter.

Why??? They vote all the time on rules changes that are GOOD for their own teams...THAT is even MORE conflict of interest..it's gone on for years!!! I think the Competition Committee should have rotating members so that it;s NOT the same coaches and owners making changes for their own team to take advantage of. It was that way with Shula...conflict of interest?? It's the WAY of that committee...NOT FAIR AT ALL!!!
Now..let's see how some other teams feel if that were the case?? Fairer?? Yes..lets' see what Goodell will do and IF he has the srones to do that.

So when WE cheat, it's "genius." But when we think other teams get the benefit of calls or something, we stage a week-long whinefest to protest the "injustice" of it all.

I see how it works.

What is this "we". You were called out as a troll earlier...

We who now?

The Commissioner is much more likely to enact a severe punshment than the Competition Committee. As was indicated, the Competition Committee has to worry about what the patriots have on them.

Exactly, that's why they have a commissioner. The league is collectively owned by the 32 teams, they could just decide everything by vote, but instead they chose the sane approach of establishing an executive office to deal with matters like that.
