I was trying to find the rule on line because all the media keeps talking about ASJ regaining possession which I believe doesn't apply hear.

The rule on a fumble is if there's no possession it stays with the team who had it last unless it's out of the end zone in which case it's a safety or a touchback depending on the situation.

For a fumble recovery to gain possession in bounds you have to demonstrate control and then get two feet in bounds. Since ASJ lost possession before the goal line and then regained possession while airborne and came down out of bounds inside the end zone it's a touchback.

I'm fairly certain I'm correct here unless there's somebody out there who is more up to date on the rules than I am.

It was a bad call.

Yep, right here he's lost it and then he does not secure it again until OOB in the end zone

Seems like a good call to me, he loses it and never gets it back. To me it’s more about if it’s through the end zone or at the 1.

That is correct. What I missed was that he was in the air when he lost possession.

The least clear aspect is where he comes down.

crazy call, but we all know this is just payback for the broncos playoff game

I was thinking it was payback for the Patriots/jets game a few years ago when the Jets missed a long field goal in OT, but the refs gave them 15 yards and another try after calling an unsportsmanlike penalty on Chris Jones for pushing a teammate into the line.

A bizarrely obscure penalty that I don't think has ever been called again

The ball moved from his left hand to his right across his body. He didn't have control when he hit the ground watch that clip again. Especially the second slo-mo replay and watch the ball.
I cannot see the ball move when he hits the ground, and I cannot tell what part of his body hits first or where.

So basically he clearly fumbled (as per picture). Clearly fumbled through the endzone(as per original TD call).

The only weird thing is he only "sorta" fumbled as he still had contact with the ball just not control. So its not "intuitively" a fumble as it would be most times in this situation.

I can see it just fine. Don't watch his body or where he lands. Just focus on the football.

This image alone (there was another angle of the video from behind) proves that he didn't break the plane with possession, meaning for possession to count he would have had to re-establish that it was a catch per regular rules, and he did not until he was out of bounds. By rule, if a ball is fumbled into the opposing end zone it is a touch back for the defense or NE in this case.

Black and white. The fact that Gronk continues to get DPI'd on the majority of plays including the uncalled one when it was 14-7 for NYJ only underscores the stupidity and inability of people to put bias (against NE) aside.

The correct over turn was made and Fouts spewing inaccurate nonsense is similar to when Cris Collinsworth kept crying about SEA not running the ball at the 1 when they would have had to throw it at least once on 2nd or 3rd down (I would have gone play action if I was SEA though to at least keep the defense guessing but that's another discussion).

The most clear aspect is where he comes down so long as you piece together when he actually has "possession."

Think about it this way. He does not have "control" when he crosses the goal line, and because he's being taken to the ground, he needs to hold onto the ball when he hits the ground.

He doesn't, he lands, rolls out of the end zone and the ball moves again, and he doesn't actually get possession until he completes his roll, falling way out of bounds and onto his back.
