Pats trade Jacoby Brissett to the Colts for Phillip Dorsett

This definitely puts the onus on the Pats to draft a QB this offseason, since even assuming Jimmy gets a first round tender we still only have one more year after this one with both main QBs. I liked Brissett, but if the Pats are confident that Jimmy will be a Patriot through next season then I get the hesitation to carry 3 QBs when you can get a meaningful asset for the third one now.

As far as Dorsett goes... eh. He was great in college, but he hasn't shown anything in the NFL to suggest that he's a meaningful player. Maybe the Pats will be the team that gets something out of him, and if not as long as he can handle punt returns that might be enough to make it worth it.

Wait, what the f***? Beyond the trade itself, this means the team has no third QB and their second string QB is a free agent next year. If Jimmy is gone then who the hell backs up TB12? Makes me think that they are either planning on extending him somehow.

That was my initial reaction too, but I guess the Pats are assuming that they can keep Garoppolo through next season with a first round tender. And if not, hey, we get a first pick out of it so that's cool.

This also assumes Brady is still playing at a high level through his age-41 season, but that concern doesn't really worry me as much as it maybe should.

Lollipop-Pop Guild still remains in tact..

Amazing how winning Super Bowls keeps it alive.

I don't get it, Belichick sucks, that's obvious, the critics would win 100% of the time, not just 80%.

You guys are awesome.

Thanks

My guess is they will worry about 2018 in next year's FA. A roster spot was too valuable this year.

He'll be an UFA not a RFA, there's no tender to deal with. Franchise or lose.

That doesnt change that you are rewriting history calling him a sure thing. After a year he was considered a bust and what he did afterwards doesnt change that. Its easy to call someone a sure thing in retrospect.

Again, only idiots call players "bust" after one year. You know how many players are labeled "bust" after their first season. Peyton... I could sit here for hours and compile a list of great players, even hall of famers who were labeled "bust"

The only thing that matters at all is he's an all pro now.

If you listen to Lombardi he seems to say the opposite and also says that BB is one fof the best at that. Dont let need drive your draft.

Bill is the definition of flexible in terms of his coaching/gm career.

My point is there's a balance.

No one goes into a draft saying "I'm doing this" as an absolute.

So... Will we sign an obscure free agent to the practice squad to man the QB3 Position?

9 times out of 10 the team with the number 1 overall goes in doing that.

So with cooks and Dorset on the outside, that means 7 in the box which should make our ground game better.

Plus tons of room for gronkowski and hogan on intermediate routes.

Plus it means linebackers might have to cover our running backs in wheel routes.

Love the trade. We just got an impact player for someone probably would not start a game for us in the future.

Agreed. I guess others foresaw this, but I have to admit this is one of the most shocking moves (especially to the Colts!) that I have seen from the Pats.

So they will go into the season with JAG starting and a rookie backup????

What???

It was response to Curran and Lombardi that tweeted "don't read anything in the tea leaves concerning the future of JG with the Brissett trade"

As I said above have to believe that JG is on the team next year..and the Pats would be gambling to have a rookie back up if They were to trade JG.

Of course I Don't, particularly in our offense. But Hogan is primarily an intermediate and deep route specialist. And that shouldn't change. He is not a get-open-quick guy. I mistakenly said that he shouldn't line up inside, in my mind I was arguing that he will not be working underneath routes all of a sudden and trying to fill the edelman/slot role.

He's not a slot guy, I agree. But I think he's not a deep route specialist either. While he made some big plays for us, I think it might have been a statistical anomaly.

In his 4 years with Buffalo, he only averaged 11 yards per reception (Y/R), with a high of 12.5.

Last year in New England, he averaged 17.9 Y/R. But I think it might have been a bit of a statistical stretch based on a small sample size. He had 4 big catches thrown 31+ yards, covering 238 yards, or 59 yards per catch. On his other 34 catches, he averaged 13 yards.

For context, 4 of his 38 catches with the Patriots were thrown 31+ yards, while he only had 3 similar catches out of 87 with the Bills. His best season was his last, where he had 3 catches thrown 31+ yards, and even then he only averaged 12.5 Y/R.

Obviously there's a much much much much much much better QB involved, but that doesn't seem sustainable to me. It wouldn't surprise me if he was compared more to Malcolm Mitchell after this season than deep threats like Brandin Cooks.

His contract is up.

Maybe I'm wrong but wouldn't we want Dorset in the slot with his quickness, especially with the fact that gronk can shift to the outside and we have hogan

i would love to know how the trade went down
