Aside from the two obvious changes (Edelman, Ealy), what else did everyone see in regards to how the Pats roster will look when the season begins? Final roster cuts are a week away (September 2), with the first regular season game five days after that.

Post your latest roster projections here, as well as links to those made by the sports media.

I include Solder, Slater, Garcia, Mitchell, and McClellan. Any of these could end up on IR. Also, there will likely be players from other teams.

You have rb(5) but only 4 players.

An off the cuff projection:

QB (3) T.Brady, J.Garoppolo, J.Brissett
RB (4) J.White, R.Burkhead, M.Gillislee, D.Lewis
FB (1) J.Develin
WR (6) B.Cooks, C.Hogan, M.Mitchell, D.Amendola, A.Carr, M.Slater
TE (3) R.Gronkowski, D.Allen, J.O'Shaughnessy

C (1) D.Andrews
G (4) S.Mason, J.Thuney, T.Karras, J.Douglas
T (4) N.Solder, M.Cannon, C.Fleming, C.Croston

DT (4) A.Branch, M.Brown, V.Valentine, A Butler (DT/DE)
DE/LB (10) T.Flowers, D.Wise, L.Guy, G.Grissom, C.Kidder
K.VanNoy, S.McClellin, D.Hightower, D.Harris, H.Langi

CB (5) M.Butler, S.Gilmore, E.Rowe, J.Jones, K.Moore
S (5) D. McCourty, P.Chung, D. Harmon, N.Ebner, B.King

ST (3) S.Gostkowski, R.Allen, J.Cardona

Italics: primarily ST player, emergency/injury only as a position player.

IR: Rivers, Edelman, Garcia

Could remove one of the OL (Croston/Douglas) for another defensive player.

Kidder is temporary, to be replaced with whomever Belichick signs off waivers after the Sept. 2 cuts. Could easily substitute Freeny, Roberts, etc. in his place for now.

Other notable cuts include Foster, Bolden, C Jones, Coleman, Richards, Hollister, Lucien, Bates, etc.

I would add Carr as 5th wide receiver and carry 4 running backs plus Develin....Just my opinion....

I'll be my bottom dollar that is the way it will play out

I agree with the Carr addition but no love for Lucien?? Guy has been putting in work here for a year under the practice squad

fixed

I think that we need the extra Ster. I meant to include Bolden. I now include him as an STO player. If Roberts make it, as you suggest, I would keep either Freeny or Bolden.

I think this is pretty much it except for Richards. Putting him in as LB in the last pre season game is a sign of desperation and him not being able to make consistent tackles there is the final nail in the coffin. In fact, he might even end up on the practice squad because I doubt anyone will pick him up and his eligibility should still be there.

PS: Jacob Hollister TE, Austin Carr WR, Conor McDermott T, Jamil Douglas OG, Keionta Davis DE, Woodrow Hamilton DT, Trevor Bates LB, Kenny Moore II CB, David Jones S, Caleb Kidder DE

Surprise Trade: I don't want this to happen but they can trade Lewis. If this happen Bolden stays.

Carr can easily be stashed, Foster some pick will claim. And Foster can play as a WR and RB. He will be one os the last options on both, so its for depth purpose only.

I think this one's more difficult than previous years.

QB (3): 12 Brady, 10 Garoppolo, 7 Brissett

ST (3): 3 Gostkowski, 6 Allen, 49 Cardona

* = pretty much just special teams

Some thoughts:
  • Possible that Brissett could be cut and sent to the PS (I think there is a reasonable chance he clears waivers).
  • Lot of RBs already, and I think it's possible Foster is added on as well
  • Had Bolden off my roster for the first time in years yesterday, then I got the news about Edelman.
  • WR depth not looking too hot, but luckily, there will be anywhere from 3-5 viable pass catching RBs on the roster.
  • I hope Hogan can catch more passes this year, even though he's technically not being promoted (he was #2 last year, now he's #2 again).
  • I have no idea why people are putting Jacob Hollister on the roster. Lengel showed more last year than Hollister has this offseason. O'Shaughnessy is better anyway.
  • Wouldn't be terribly surprised if they went with 2 TE but IMO that would be stupid given Gronk's history.
  • If they keep 9 OL, I'm expecting the last one either to be Waddle or Croston.
  • It seems like 3 man defensive lines (or the 2011 version of the 4-3 in which the LE was a slimmer DT) are the only way to get the best players on the field this year. It has to be Brown-Branch-Guy, right?
  • EDGE position is in worse shape than I've seen a Pats position in a few years. 2013 WR might be the last time, but I'm reminded of the 2011 safeties after getting rid of Sanders and Meriweather with no viable replacements.
  • I am aware that Rivers is likely headed to IR. When that happens, I'll begrudgingly give his spot to Grissom.
  • Richards wouldn't be on this team if Ebner could play safety. Alas, they pretty much use 3 safeties as starters, so you can't cut the fourth.

Slater, Garcia, McLellin and Lengel haven't practiced in weeks. Any or all of them could be headed for IR.

I'd say that Rivers is definitely headed to IR. Can't do it yet, though, without exposing him to waiver claims. Could send Edelman to IR now, though. As a vested vet, he's not subject to waiver claims.

Roberts can fill freenys st role

Probably wouldn't be necessary. Langi has been an ST beast this pre-season, and Bates has played a lot of ST snaps, too.

Roberts, OTOH, played a total of 19 ST snaps last season and hasn't appeared much on ST this pre-season, AFAIK.

I thought I heard he was playing a lot of st snaps.
I don't see bates making the team.

Neither Garcia nor Rivers can be sent to IR now without passing through waivers.

Players that a team may want to have return from IR during the season must be on the 53 after cutdowns.

In years past, when there were two cutdowns a week apart, a player could be sent to season-ending IR without having to pass through waivers during that week, IIRC. With only the one cutdown period this year, I don't know whether or not that special dispensation still applies.

If it does, Rivers could be sent to IR without being on the 53, since it's pretty clear his injury is season-ending. However, if the Pats want to bring Garcia back for the second half of the season, he will have to be on the 53 through the end of cutdowns and then sent to IR the next day.

However, the Pats have a couple-three roster-end veterans who they could cut for a day (e.g., Bolden, Freeny) and bring back the next in order to manage those transactions. Veterans aren't subject to waiver claims.

At LEAST Carr, Hollister & Moore NEVER make it to the PS.

I don't see bates making the team.

For me, whether either Freeny or Bates makes the team hinges on McLellin's health status. AFAIK, he hasn't practiced at all in about three weeks. IF McLellin is a candidate for IR, then one of Freeny/Bates probably makes the roster as a 5th LB/ST behind HT, Harris, Van Noy and Roberts for the duration of McLellin's stay on IR (he could return after 8 weeks).

So, then it comes down to who you like better - Freeny or Bates. It's kind of a toss-up for me.

Just to be clear, I view Langi as a potential DE/OLB special teamer right now - an upgrade from Grissom, who Langi would likely displace.
