Judge erases Aaron Hernandez’s murder conviction

So pats are now on the hook to pay his girlfriend the 2012 signing bonus and extension money.

The outcome could make it impossible for the Patriots to deny further payment of the signing bonus that Hernandez earned in 2012, and likewise to reclaim all money he earned under the contract extension. Given the acquittal for the double murder that came five days before his death and the expungement of the murder conviction, Hernandez in the eyes of the law is not guilty of murder.

The law in massachusetts is screwed up, but it seems to be clear. If you die while your case is pending appeal you are not guilty.

Innocent until proven guilty. The judge made the right call based on the law.

He played the system. Now his "you're rich" message to his girlfriend makes sense.

Still a POS who killed a person (a "friend", even) for no reason.

No.. The Pats situation with Hernandez was done awhile back.. Hernandez lost his grievance against the team.

People need to remember that Hernandez was cut long before this ever went to trial.. The trial outcome had no effect on the contract or the guaranteed money.

EDIT: Updated with the fact that Hernandez lost his grievance. Not that they came to a settlement.

She's not rich.. There is a civil suit still outstanding against Hernandez' Estate for the wrongful death of Lloyd..

You might be right but florio seems to feel otherwise

Still angry at the wasted football potential. I don't care for any of them personally, and I am pleased NE moved on from his ASAP. Was the right call.

But : AH was an exceptional football player that would have surely continued an upward arc. Wasted it. And ruined lives along the way.

Doesn't matter what Florio "thinks". He's forgetting the gun charges that weren't over-turned. He's also forgetting that Hernandez lost his grievance with the Pats.

From the end of the Snopes page:
"However, the NFL is a business entity and not a court of law, and Hernandez’s contract was voided 90 minutes after his arrest based on “conduct unbecoming,” not on his conviction."

What a convoluted mess. :(

This is also a Federal statute and many other states have this law as well. The only way around it is to get the law changed.

(For the record, I think it's BS too).

Why would a girlfriend be entitled to anything?

It's BS, ok I can see that.

But what's the better option? To go forward with a trial? Seems like a complete waste.

Declare them guilty if they kill themselves? Great way to demonize innocent people who get arrested and commit suicide due to mental illness.

I don't see a better option.
