Jets in on Hightower

Not a newsflash but just a lazy Tuesday afternoon statement: The Jet fan is a strange species. Start at post 227 when one wonders why anyone would possibly come back to the Patriots for less $$. Or the motive for TB12 to take less to help sign more players. Answer - The Pats continue to do something your team hasn't done in 50 years. Three letter word.......begins with a 'W'.

I have a different view on one of those two SB winning plays. The tackle on Lynch is because of a great play he made, but the sack on Ryan was because of a horribly blown assignment by the opponent. Not meant as a knock on HT though because he made plenty of other great plays.

Blown assignment or not there have been many instances in post season games where they had a QB dead to rights and the QB got away, Hightower lined him up and finished him, huge play. Great teams need big play playmakers like Bruschi, Law, and McGinest were, Hightower brings that dimension to this team.

10.875 million vs the 11 million the Jets reportedly offered.

125k on an 11mil deal isn't enough to get someone to move their whole life.

Belichick paid what he had to in order to keep Hightower. Nicely done.

What great news!
Very happy.

Maybe, maybe not. Needs context.

If Hightower tends to be out for certain categories of plays and those plays are generally higher-average plays because of the nature of the plays, then this would indicate nothing. Conversely, if he tends to be out for plays that are intrinsically lower-averaging plays then this may well mean something.

Here's an example of what I mean...
Player 1 is a not-great defender who mostly plays only on running downs.
Player 2 is an excellent defender who mostly plays mostly on passing downs.

Because an average pass play racks up more yards than an average run play, it is highly likely that the defense will give up fewer yards when Player 1 is on the field than when Player 2 is on the field, even though Player 2 is a significantly better player than Player 1.

Agree on your thinking but High is a 3 down guy and based on how good he is vs the run and decent in coverage and knows matchups I'll willing to climb out on a limb and say the D is "stingier" with him out there as opposed to someone like Van Noy or McClellin.

Wow we are STACKED now.
If we can keep and sign Butler, if only to trade him at some future point, we are well poised to at least return to the Superbowl. Who in the AFC can hang with the Pats for a full 60 minutes?

You may get up on us at some point in the game but we're never down until the final whistle blows.

How often does a Superbowl champ actually GET BETTER during the offseason? In the modern game, tons of talent gets leeched off the champ, but not us.
It's not that teams don't leech talent from NE. They just do a better job than just about everyone of replacing the talent they lose. But all-in-all, agreed.

BTW...if you wanna make cupcakes....make 'em like this.

My 12 year old made Patriot cupcakes for the Super Bowl. She made a batch with vanilla with marbled raspberries in the batter and a cheesecake frosting.

I think I had one every time the Falcons scored. Drowning my sorrows....

Great - So why are the Jet fans wondering why a player would not take the extra money to leave or why Tom Brady takes less money. No player in their right mind would leave the Patriots to play for the Jets for a net total of $125 and a few green cupcakes.

With the difference in moving and tax rates Dont'a would have made less money most likely going to the Jets. I am just glad he is here. Now hopefully Butler stays for atleast the season. I am not really surprised by the money sounds about right. If you classify him as an ILB he is the 2nd highest paid in the league.

Huge move. He brings alot to our team in terms of leadership and is a beast in rushing the passer situatuons as well as against the run

I dunno. Where are these Jet fans wondering why he didn't relocate his whole life for 125k? I haven't seen anyone asking that.

And Brady is just a unique situation. Most times an NFL player is the major bread winner in a household. Not for Tommy though. His wife makes more than he does. So making every penny isn't much of a concern. Besides I'm sure he makes the money back somehow. Between endorsements because he's so adored in NE, and don't the Pats buy some health/sports drink from Tom? Dunno if that last part is true, just something I've heard.

Not to mention next year I think his cap hit skyrockets. From like 14mil, up to like 25mil. So it's not like he's playing for chump change after this season.

In my original post (link) that you quoted and originally responded too. The answer doesn't really matter as its rhetorical. Its just that your first response had nothing to do with the questions.

That's until he signs his extension which would keep under contract through 2020.

So to put it in Jets terms: Brady will be the Pats QB for approximately 40% of the Jets Superbowless years.

Play for a team poised to go to another superbowl for 10.85 million.

Or play for a team that is oised to win 3 games next year for an additional 125k or so

Tough choice!

We better not win 3 games damn it.

Maybe just one win vs NE. Other than that... Suck for Sam!
