Patriots Trade For Indy TE Dwayne Allen

No offense but I trust Lombardi and BB more than your assessment.

That's a lot of money for a blocker, I hope he can produce in the passing game because he's lacked in that area on a high powered Colts offense

Nice to know he's a great blocker, but I would imagine they expect more from him than just blocking.. Will be interesting to see how they fit him in at training camp and how he looks

Does anyone think Bennett sniffs 700 yards this year if gronk is healthy all year? Probably not and hopefully allen wont because that will mean gronk is healthy.

Bennett priced himself out of new england and the patriots got a cheaper younger version of him who possibly was being misused in Indy.

They essentially gave up nothing and it shores up a need. You still need to draft a tight end but whomever you draft wont be able to know the nuances of blocking as a tight end right away

Allen only has $1m dollars guaranteed after 2017 ($0.5m in 2018 & $0.5m in 2019) so won't cost a ton to cut him if it does not work out on the field this year. Possibly even restructure next year for more guaranteed money and lesser cap hit if things do work out.

Actually it is even better ....

If he doesn't pan out we just cut him. 4th for him and a 6th is a great value trade, love this deal.

I like the trade, but I am worried about him staying healthy. We also have Housler in the fold and I expect us to draft a TE!

Colts have been a dumpster fire. Allen may find some energy here in NE, or get cut.

That's true, the Patriots won't have any dead cap money if they need to cut him.. so the risk isn't really all that much I suppose.. other than maybe a few miffed players that are making less than Allen now on offense, but nothing that would cause a problem

They'll draft a TE and if Gronk squawks about his deal he's gone too

so with Gronk, Allen, and Williams are we going to have 3 in-line TEs and no move TEs at all?

Or maybe a move TE will battle Williams for TE3.

Really good Q.

They have Fleming to fill the #3 blocking TE spot if needed. It could be an uphill battle for Williams and Lengel. At the moment Housler could have an edge being more complementary - IF he can be at their level as a player.

I believe they will go with 4 TEs again (since Gronk is returning after injury again).

Last year it was Gronk + Bennett + reserve blocking TE Harbor that was cut after Gronk returned + move TE Derby (traded to Denver before Gronk got injured again).

Since Pats were heavily interviewing TEs at Combine - and its such a deep class - they will likely draft one (and add 1-2 UDFAs).

Before the certainty of vet #2 TE - and knowing Howard would be gone by #32 - I thought Leggett would be the best option. With the new TE situation going for a move TE could be the way: you could maybe have Njoku or Engram at #32, possibly Shaheen (a project) or Everett #64, Hodges with one of the 3rd rounders.

The problem is TEs made a huge leap on draft boards after combine, especially the move TEs. I bet BB knew this and moved quickly in the best marketplace - trade.

Whoa. They traded a 4th for Bennett last year.

Is there a Wow or Gasp button?

They must really see something in him they like.. I hope he works out, it would be nice to have some consistency at both TE positions

A couple of points noone has mentioned.

The Patriots traded the 4th round pick we had from Seahawks which was pick 122. This pick was going to be forfeited since we forfeit our highest 4th round pick. Our own pick is 128. So by trading this pick for 1 or 2 rounds down, we forfeit 128 instead of 122 and hence create value. The Colts now get to pick at 122. If we kept this pick it would have been forfeited. This is why it was smart to trade this pick and get some value for it.

Secondly, the Colts didn't make the playoffs and we get their 6th rd pick but it's in first half of 6th rd. So we drop from last pick of 4th to first half of 6th round.

Basically in terms of draft capital what we gave up is just a wash. We dropped 1 round and change from our last pick of 4th round pick.

So the deal should just be looked at in terms of the player, and the contract that comes in. We gave up practically nothing in draft capital. And, as has been reported, we get a good TE who is on $5m for each of 2017 and 2018. Forget the $7.5 for 2019. Either he restructures by then, or gets cut, or he's a superstar and we are happy to pay him that amount. This should be looked at as a $5m for 2017, and $5m for 2018.

This trade is amazing in every respect.

BB is a genius.

Question, how did we trade a 4th round pick? I thought they weren't allowed to move any 4th rounders because the league takes the best one. Is it the 2018 4th rounder?

Not sure why you're getting so many laughs, Allen has been the definition of mediocre and has underperformed his contract to date with the Colts..

I really hope that's because they've been misusing him.. but even homer Colts fans have been harping on this guy for YEARS...

Just seems like way too much money for him, but who knows... The Colts are a dumpster fire, so hopefully we can utilize him to his strengths and have him earn that contract

I don't care about his contract with the Colts.

We have him for $5m for 1 year. Cap hit to release him next year is $1m. Even better, unlike Bennett, if he's good we get to keep him for another year at $5m in 2018. Cap hit to release him in 2019 is $0.5m. So forget the $8.5m in 2019.

The question isn't whether he was good enough for $7.5m per year. Will he be good enough for $5m per year (2017 and 2018) with the Pats, considering the Pats employed more 2 TE formations than any other team for each of last 6 years. I think he will. This is a good deal.

Question, how did we trade a 4th round pick? I thought they weren't allowed to move any 4th rounders because the league takes the best one. Is it the 2018 4th rounder?

The league takes our highest 4th round pick. We had Seahawks pick, 122, and our own pick, 128. We were set to forfeit 122 and then we'd have picked at 128. Instead we traded the Seahawks pick, which was 122, to the Colt. Now we forfeit 128 instead, our original 4th rounder lower down, and now we have no 4th round picks.

They can't move the highest 4th

Incorrect. We just traded away our Seahawks (higher) pick.

The rule is we forfeit our highest 4th round pick. This is to stop us from acquiring a higher 4th round.

This was put in place after we picked Mayo at top of the draft (#10) in 2008 from a pick we acquired even though we were set to forfeit our own 1st round pick (#31)
