I decided to mix it up a little and deviate from an individual scouting report and give you my rankings of the QB class. Even if the Patriots trade Garoppolo, I don't see QB as a high priority, so I probably won't go any further in depth on this position going forward.

This class has a lot of potential, but not a single day one starter. I'd take Garoppolo over any of them in a heartbeat. That said, Mahomes really intrigues me as a three- or four-year project behind Brady. His upside is Aaron Rodgers.

You are right, there is some potential in the class and I agree on Mahomes as well. The problem is he may end up going in the top half of round 1 and will then be forced to play before he is ready, which usually ends bad.

I don't see much potential in this class. The fact we need to talk about the potential these guys might have as the selling points shows how bad this class is. I only see 2 guys who have a chance to be anything. Mahomes and Trubisky. That's it. Everyone else on your list or any list is very likely to be is a total bust.

Kizer is your top QB and he can not pass the ball well. Watson is the same. He needs to learn to pass. If you need to learn to pass as a QB then you need to learn to play QB. They don't know how. They will do what all QBs that can't pass do. Try to pass and fail then depend on running as a bridge to be effective while learning to pass and get hurt. Once hurt all progress stops. Seen it so many times.

Peterman? I see him in the pocket and not only can he pass but he freaks out. He is not steady and when things are not 100% perfect he panics and does something stupid like throw off his back foot or totally misses. He lacks the mental quickness you need and/or the temperament. Bust.

I really see this as a 2 man class with both needing to develop to have a shot. I appreciate the effort here but personally I wouldn't draft anyone besides Mahones/Trubisky until round 5. I am not kidding. Round 5. Maybe lower. As for Mahomes and Trubisky round 2 prospects I'd say but if you ask either to play day 1 that probably ends badly.

I think I made it pretty clear that I didn't see much from this class either. Kizer is only 20 and has the physical makeup of an NFL QB. Everyone of these QB's has worts and probably more question marks than things they do well. Like I said in the original post, I am glad the Patriots are not a team in need of a QB.

Oh you did make it clear you don't like this class but I think everyone is being too generous with their grades on these QBs. I see everyone's list some of these QBs first second and third round grades and mostly I don't see how they can. I guess it depends on what you think a 2nd, 3rd and so on round QB is worth.

I guess I would ask you how you quantify your grades. I know that is a hard question to answer but it would make things clear. It would have a lot to do with what you think their potential ceiling is and your feeling they meet it or close to it. Also if they can do it instantly.

Here is how I look at QBs roughly by round grade. Obviously these are not end all be all. But it is a fairly quick view of how I would personally decide what round grade I would give a QB. Obviously a low 1st shares traits with a 2nd just as a high 4th would share traits with a 3rd.

1st - high chance to be a good franchise QB and probably ready to start quickly.
2nd - fairly high chance to be a good franchise QB but probably needs some time to develop.
3nd - so-so chance to be a decent franchise QB but will need more than a year to develop. Long term project most likely who doesn't check all the boxes (maybe short or weak arm or something)
4th - low chance to be a franchise QB but has good upside and might be a very capable career backup.
5th - low chance to be a franchise QB. Being a total bust who is out of the NFL is the most likely outcome but has some interesting tools and maybe could be something
6th-7th - very unlikely these prospects amount to anything but you feel inclined to take a shot. Never know if you will get another Tom Brady. Here just look for any reason to find a guy you believe can be something. Maybe you will be right.

Just remember that history reveals only 8% of selected and drafted First Round QBs ever become franchise QBs; and everything ranks downward from there proportionally.

It is extremely hard to find franchise QBs.

Good Question:
I base my evaluations and rankings on traits as well and think we are pretty much on the same page. I agree that for some reason even the big name draftniks out there tend to push up QB's every year. I wonder if that is because they know these guys are going to get drafted in the first? One thing I will take into account (maybe wrong) is position importance and scarcity. In a vacuum, none of these guys would probably be 2nd rounders, but I ask myself if I need a QB, where would I be okay taking one of these guys and seeing if I can develop them. This year, that would be the late 2nd round. Now, I am putting my board together as we speak, and I have a ton of 2nd round grades and these QB's are going to be at the tail end of that, so they will end up closer to 100 in the rankings than 60.
I hope that makes sense.

If goff or wentz were in this draft, would any qb in this draft be ranked ahead of those two guys?

And yet, the Jets at #6 and the Browns at #12 may each take one of these guys, regardless of their grades. Assuming that the Browns don't cough up a haul of draft picks for JG sufficient to rank the trade among the Top Five all time biggest pick trades in NFL history.

The rest of the teams, including perhaps even the Niners (with Hoyer), might well prefer to muddle through with whoever they have and skip taking a QB until the 4th round or so. Still, even in "poor" QB classes, 3 or 4 of them are typically off the board by the end of Round-3.

The Browns have too really. Keep drafting a QB until you hit on one, especially when you have so many picks.
