Jacoby Brissett proving even a 3rd-string rookie quarterback can be a leader for Patriots

I've heard that even a 4th-string rookie QB can show leadership.

While no one knows how his career will go his intangibles are off the charts. The only other QB that I can remember being like this before he became a starter was TFB himself, although I think Jimmy G has also managed to earn the respect of the veterans.

I love hearing this about a guy who may end up as Brady's successor some day.

Certainly I don't recall any stories like this about Rohan Davey or Kevin O'Connell.

He's a 6th rounder, he's not replacing Bledsoe lol and we just gave Bledsoe a 10yr contract

Which makes it that much more remarkable that the team kept 4 QBs on the roster.

I distinctly remember when the Pats drafted Brady. Mel Kiper opined that "the Pats have just made an interesting pick". Well he says that about a lot of players, and I know I felt it was a wasted pick.

Hell the Pats had Bledsoe and two other young veteran QBs on the roster already.

Where were we going to find room for him?

So very glad to be totally wrong on that one.

Jimmy is ready to play . great. Unfortunately likely on another team.

Jacoby is groomed to lead. Hopefully his play matches the character.

(Great to read about his TB qualities from way back . before he moved next to him (literrally next to his locker . with Mitchell first TB neighbour on the other side))

Did everyone forget the Bishop? There were a lot of folks here that crowned him the successor to Drew.

Brady getting drafted didn't even register on my radar. I was more busy drinking and hanging with the ladies than I was with following football.

I DID kinda think he might be a one-year wonder after that first SB. Glad I was wrong about that.

EDIT - As for Brissett, I like what I've seen so far, but as with anything Pats related these days, I take a wait-and-see approach.

I didn't think it was so much a wasted pick (6th round after all, a flyer by anyone's standards), but it was pretty shocking that the Pats, who often went with 2 QBs (and maybe not at that time; it's getting to be a long time ago) went with 4! I remember thinking, what is up with that?

That is why I always have to laugh when I hear Rats fans lament of how things would have been different if they had drafted Brady.

No they wouldn't have been different. Just like they did when they released the UDFA Danny Woodhead and kept the guy they drafted in the 4th round in Joe McKnight, the Rats would have cut Brady or, at best the Rats would have had Brady on their practice squad.

In either case whether BB claimed him off waivers or signed him off of their practice squad, the Pats would have gotten Brady since the Rats can't judge talent and value players, at least initially, by their draft status.

In the same manner, if the Rats could recognize football talent they would have chosen the unproven BB as their HC rather than the headline grabbing theft of Bill Parcells.

I guess what I am getting at is "**** the Rats!"

One of us has to check our memory banks or pre-TB team rosters, because my recollection is the Pats 2qb 'system' is a recent (post 2004) phenomena. I think they alwayd had 3 going back to 70s much like every other team

The last vet backup they had for a full season was Flutie in 2005.

No, you are probably right, and that is the reason I gave the caveat I did. It was still pretty unprecendented to carry 4 QBs instead of 3, with roster spots being so scarce. And since then, BB has definitely gone with only 2 QBs from time to time.
