I won't link the article from the World Leader in Declining Viewership, but there's an article on there tonight detailing how Hester ended up in Seattle. Hester told the reporter he tried out for the Patriots and was going to sign there, but the plans were blown up because Floyd became available on the waiver wire. I think I recall the Patriots working out Hester after the Ravens cut him but didn't realize they were that serious.

If I'm not mistaken, Floyd does not return punts, so that would be concerning about the Patriots punt returners (none of you could have ever guessed that, right?) because the Patriots rarely add a player so one-dimensional. I wonder if this would have been an insurance policy and a likely cut if Amendola is okay. I think I speak for everyone that it's a huge win if we can merely find a guy who can get away from a grounded ball and can catch the ball in the air, even if the yards gained are minimal or even zero.

Hester can't play WR, thankfully Lloyd was available.

Floyd makes it less risky for Amendola to cover punts

This cannot be true, we've been told by our local mediots that Hester is terrible and there would be no way the Patriots would sign him.

No that isn't a huge win. We want to be SUCCESSFUL in the return game.

This makes sense given the meltdown by the punt returners in the Baltimore game. Belichick saw an opportunity to improve return game - a weakness all year. Floyd became available, and his pickup has improved the pass game and the return game by making Amendola available. Improve 2 units with one player.

Floyd as a big body outside WR is of more value to us than Hester as a PR.
I tend to agree but I'm not sure I would have agreed after the BAL game.

Return guys can't cough up the ball and make mental mistakes.

Bringing a guy in for a tryout is miles away from imminently signing that guy.

Remember, he was available specifically because he was struggling with fielding punts. He shied away from that punt against us which set up the safety.

And as much as I hate Jim Harbawl, the guy started his career as a special teams coach, and the Ravens have always had pretty good special teams play. If he doesn't think enough to keep Hester on the roster, that speaks volumes about where Hester is at.
