No Gronk + New Wr Identity = No Problem!!

Based on what? Stats? They are being used differently in this offense.

In 2014 they had 6 guys they threw the ball to. JE11, Gronk, LaFell , Vereen, DA and Wright. In the playoffs it went down to 5.

In 2016 they have 7 JE11, Hogan, Mitchell, Bennett, White, Lewis and now Floyd. I'm not sure that changes in the playoffs.

In 2016 they threw the ball ~50 times less than 2014.

LeFell had a really good year but I don't think he is appreciably better than Hogan.
Lafell performed bigly in the playoffs in 14, 13 catches 2 tds and he was often 4th option behind Edelman, Gronkowski, Vereen (esp in playoffs)....in the SB he had a td and set up a td (I think the go ahead td to 11)....

I dont think this is as good as you think. The problem with 5 WR set is that there is no "disguise" play. When we have a 2/2/1 personnel, the defense needs to be ready for anything, runs, passes, play actions.

On a empty backfield 5 wr set, is always going to be a pass. Plus, on those kind of sets, we have to rely very heavily on individual skills of our receivers and, besides Edelman, i would say we dont have an excellent receiver (yet, at least)

There's a reason BB has been searching for a second TE to match up with Gronk for year and not going after WRs in FA.
You mean that you are discounting Brady's new found running ability?

No doubt he came up huge, huge just tremendous. We had the best people and they did an amazing job. Just amazing. Also the OL was huge. They built a wall of protection in the playoffs and it was the best wall and made our pocket great again!

But we can do better. We are going to build a great offense line wall and we are going to make the Colts pay for it believe me!

OK so you are basing it on playoff performance. Since Hogan hasn't gotten it done in the playoffs then you are right.

LaFell being a better receiver is a question mark still.

If Hogan replicates or bests Lafell in the playoffs then he'll be better, till then, Lafells 2014 season has been more productive than Hogan...nothing against Hogan, he's been awesome, but LaFell was a big piece of a SB champion....

They like to run the 22 grouping. Hes the backup TE. Hes also playing STs. Lengel will be active on gamedays.
Also, I have this funny feeling Matt Lengel will make a KEY play at some point in the playoffs. C'mon we all know that BB & JMD always have something up their hoodies

Thats a factual statement. I think their roles are different in the offense but thats fine. I also think there are less opportunities for Hogan that LaFell has gotten otherwise.

2017 will be telling.

Jules, Hogan, Floyd, Dion, White, Bennett, DA, Mitchell all at Brady's disposal.

...and Lengel has a big play or two. LOL

First of all, didn't he JUST have a TD against Miami????

Second of all, Mike Vrabel caught a few TDs & he was a OLB/ DE.

Third of all, TE Michael Williams caught a pass (trick play) against BAL in the '14 Divisional Round.

Brady punted against DEN in the '12 Divisional game.

Lastly, ALL of these plays took place when the Pats were fairly healthy & had a plethora of talent on the squad.

Soooo what's your point again bruh??....

You lost me, dude.

My point is the team has all these weapons and they'll use Lengel because we know they will- and should.

FYI - vs BAL that was Hoo-man, not Williams.

I think Floyd is a legit piece to the passing game.

Yeah, but can these receivers rush the passer like Gronk can?

100% agree. Weapons-wise, this team is, uh... well...

...stacked?

ummmm.....yeah......

success without gronk is not surprising

just look at the 5+ quarters that jimmy g played in the first 2 weeks of the season

this team has all the parts it needs.......and then some

I love it!! Coming at all angles. Most importantly, it shows that Brady really trust the new guys in the red zone

It may also mean that teams are concentrating on taking away the quick strike to Edelman, the Pats know this, and Brady is quickly focusing elsewhere. That's a versatility that didn't exist in '07.

The offense right now is almost a throwback to the offense of yesteryear.

Edelman is Troy Brown

Chris Hogan is Deion Branch

LaGarrette Blount is Corey Dillon

Martellus Bennett is Daniel Graham

Tom Brady is still Tom Brady

Floyd/Mitchell are like David Givens

Dion Lewis/James White are like Kevin Faulk

Except that besides Faulk and Branch, this year's versions seem to be better than their counterparts. Ok, if we are talking just the 2004 version of Corey Dillon then he is better than Blount.

Yes, I was a big fan of LaFell in 2014. He seemed like that David Givens type receiver that we needed....physical, possession receiver who could be counted on for third down conversions.

I think Hogan has fallen short of the 2014 LaFell, but that's not to say that we should have kept LaFell over Hogan. Hogan's production is far superior to 2015 LaFell, that's for sure.

LaFell was GREAT in 2014. They don't win the SB without him. Hell they might not get by BAL in the divisionals. He wound up having a decent rebound year for CIN.

I honestly thought Hogan was going to be that same kind of receiver. Instead hes Mr Deep Threat and has been used a little differently than they did w/ LaFell. Depending on how things go in the offseason, Floyd might be that Givens/LaFell big outside intermediate target in 2017.
