None of us has seen a single shred of evidence that the Patriots taped the Rams' walkthrough. None.
That was all just a total hit job. And we know now that Spygate was the impetus for Deflategate.
To everyone else in the league (including most fan bases), Deflategate was just another example of the Patriots' cheating culture.
But when you really stop and look at it, as objectively as you can, you realize that:
(1) The Patriots DID violate the rules about taping. They did. Not all of their taping was against the rules, but enough of it was that it warranted a punishment, IMO. Not the ridiculous punishment they actually received, but SOME punishment.
(2) The sense from other owners was that this taping really was crucial to the Patriots' success, and they DID see it as a form of cheating. So they were livid when Goodell destroyed the tapes, because they felt like it was a much bigger deal than maybe it was made out to be. Of course, I think jealousy of the Patriots and hatred of Belichick was a factor there.
(3) The Rams' walkthrough story was devastating because it came after the Patriots had received their penalty. And everyone felt like, WHOA WAIT A MINUTE, WHAT THE #$!!@#! HAPPENED??? And thus the idea was that the penalty was way too light. The retraction was completely irrelevant because, like with the 11 of 12 balls 2 psi and under meme, this narrative just had rocket fuel. And it immediately became a permanent part of the story. Nearly EVERYONE thinks that the Patriots did this.
(4) So when we get to Deflategate, it's just another example of the Patriots cheating. And so even though there really was no evidence the Pats did anything wrong, the other owners, still stung by what they felt was a too-small penalty for Spygate (even though it was, to that point in time, the biggest penalty ever levied). So there was a real serious push to absolutely freaking NAIL the Patriots to the wall for Deflategate.
So Deflategate was really a penalty for Spygate, which was really, when it's all boiled down, a league-wide frustration over the lack of a penalty for the Patriots taping the Rams' SB walkthrough.
Which, of course..... NEVER FREAKING HAPPENED.
It's all so frustrating. And then Deflategate is used as evidence of the Pats' "cheating culture" which helps proved that they probably DID tape the Rams' walkthrough. It's all circular, and it's all based on things which DID NOT HAPPEN. Either taping the Rams' walkthrough or deflating footballs.
It's insane. Completely insane.
