Reiss:Similarities to 2010 a notable history lesson for team

The defense was worse in 2010. They were kind of terrible actually. Almost dead last against the pass and they weren't that great at stopping the run either. Statistically one of the worst teams in the league in yards allowed per play.

The running game wasn't all that either. Anyone really miss Law Firm?

Yes but did you really think pats were going to lose to the jets at home because of all those issues you just pointed out ?
Fair enough

2010 defense had a real knack for turning the ball over, it was DMAC's rookie year at CB where he notched 7 picks.

But that was pretty much it. Worst pass rush in the BB era.

Wasn't that the year we had Mark Anderson and President Carter? Carter ended up getting injured right before the playoffs IIRC. Both were a pretty good improvement at the pass rush even if it was only for a year

Not at the time, but I'd like to think we learned from some of those mistakes. In hindsight, the warning signs were definitely there, and we chose to ignore them because we believed a one-dimensional team was better than it was. I'm trying hard to find similar warning signs with this team to ensure I'm never blindsided like that again, but there aren't many of them as far as I can tell. I think Belichick took a lot from that 2010 loss, and it informed how he's built his teams--and specifically his offenses--since then.

The one potential warning sign I can see is that the Pats' defense still hasn't played many decent offenses. For a team that finished #1 in scoring, we really don't know how good they are. We know they're not bad, but I still worry that they might be exploitable against certain matchups--specifically teams that go 4 deep at WR or who have RBs and TEs that will demand a lot out of our LBs in coverage. In other words: the Steelers scare me somewhat. And if 3 weeks from now we're facing them in the AFCCG, and they're at full strength after battling through Miami and KC, I will be worried. But that's not quite the same, and it's three-weeks-from-now's problem at this point. Playoffs are too stressful to be worrying about AFCCG matchups during wildcard week.

That was 2011.

I did do research and realized, however, that the 2010 team actually finished with more sacks than this year. I sure don't remember any of those sacks.

No kidding, I don't either. I think I remember a Chung or Nink sack against Roethlisberger but that's about it. I do recall we ****ing blew on 3rd down defense

The 2010 team was a year removed from the 2009 team that Belichick gave up on because he couldn't get them to play the way they needed to play. He cleaned house after that season and rebuilt the team for 2010. Lots of new faces. Sure, their record was good because they had Brady and a weak schedule, but that was about it.

This team is 2 years removed from winning a super bowl and 1 year removed from almost winning the AFC Championship game with a squad that was ravaged by injuries. This year's team is mentally tough and more talented.

Anything can happen. It's possible that they will be upset by Kansas City or Pittsburgh, but I don't think it's likely.

For me its still the secondary and mobile QBs. Two things which can give us trouble vs a good offense.

I just rewatched that 2010 playoff game for the first time last night.

1. That defense was held together by baling wire and duct tape. The names: Guyton, Cunningham, Love... kind of amazing they did as well as they did. Great coaching.

2. Jets CBs didn't have to defend deep. Revis was on Branch like white on rice. So Rex flooded the middle of the field and made Brady hold the ball forever.

3. Serious bad luck and stupidity in that game. Plus the Jets average starting point for each drive was around the 50.

IMHO the 2016 team runs RINGS around the 2010 team. That team had heart... this team is much tougher...

and MUCH more talented. Just compare the two rosters.

To put it very simply, WE CAN RUN THE BALL!!! In 2010 Rex flooded the middle zones and had Revis take away our number 1.

Try dropping 8 in coverage now and we'll run right over you. We also have legit outside receivers who can take the top off of any D who decides to try to force Brady outside.

I'm more excited about this offence then any since 2007, not in terms of talent, but in terms of how multiple we can be. We have a bruising running game, we have shifty backs for the passing game, we got Edelman and Bennett for the short inside attack, we got Mitchell, Hogan, and now Floyd who can stretch the D on the outside. D coordinators will lose a lot of sleep facing this O.

That 2010 year we were 14-2,healthy and fully loaded. Heck green bay was 15-1 the following year and then out of nowhere, poof you're eliminated in the 1st round of the playoffs. Everything is fine until it's not.

A lot of people saying 2010 team was not good in this thread. That team absolutely choked and should have easily at least made it to the Super Bowl. It was a total choke job and it is a good lesson for this team to think about as much as any other lesson.

That first interception really sucked ass. Didn't help that BB couldn't just give Welker a break and let him play the first drive too. Like, I understand the whole respecting other coaches thing but it's the playoffs. Figure out some other way of disciplining him. Not that it broke the camel's back or anything.

Could've been our first Brady-Rodgers SB but I get the feeling Rodgers torches that defense anyway
In hind sight it is absurd that he benched Welker in a playoff game like that. Ridiculous and hypocritical.

We couldve run the ball but decided against it. it wasnt JMcD and BB's best coaching. Brady got hit and sacked by 3 man pressures.

I dont think we were outmatched vs the jets. We played poorly and didnt coach well . Shouldve handed off more.

2016 is a better, tougher, more dimensional, more experienced team. And face it, for all we hate the guy, Ryan always played BB tough (except the buttfumble game, which was just a comedy of errors).

But yeah, ANY GIVEN SUNDAY.

Very true. I didn't mean to imply we were outmatched by the Jets and it was a horrible coaching job, but this year we have already engrained in this team that we can run the ball. It isn't a switch that needs to be flipped. It's part of our identity and D-Coordinators know it. Opens up play action as well.
