Reiss:Similarities to 2010 a notable history lesson for team

Yep, I've given a lot of thought to the comparisons with the 2010 team. First of all, this season, the Pats have faced an easier schedule technically, but they've overcome a lot of demons this year. Overcoming the fate of the 2010 team might be yet another demon they vanquish on their way to #5.

Well, we do have a few new guys, so running wrong routes like Gronk and Hernandez were doing? But they're all veterans except Mitchell. So I think we'll be ok.

Edit: That's right, 2010 D was hot garbage. Everytime the opposing offense had 2nd and short I remember thinking to myself just let them get the first down and try again instead of wasting energy on a lost cause.

I heard this comparison last week. I don't see it other than a "few new faces" but with a big difference. The new faces are vets for the most part. That 2010 team had something like 26 players that were either rookies or 2nd year players starting or getting significant playing time.

Gronk and Hernandez were rookies, Chung was a 2nd year player first year starter etc...that was a very young team.

I understand the correlation but 2016's defense is much better than 2010's. Both on the stat sheet and in the eye test.

That 2010 defense lived off turnovers.

Patriots OL is playing much better, they have a solid running game, and a number of passing targets. Oh, and the defense is playing well.

Given the number of Stepford posters in that other thread, Reiss' article is a refreshingly candid read.

I hope the Patriots don't end up losing another game to the Ravens in the divisional round. Oh wait, the Ravens aren't in the playoffs. Hope they don't lose to the Je--Jets are out too? Well, they better hope they don't have to travel to Denver for an AFCCG. Wait, the Patriots not only ended up with a better record than them, but they also missed the playoffs? Well, ****.

Not the best comparison, but at the least it's a reminder that there are no guarantees come playoff time, and I'm sure the vets from back then can hammer it home.

Brady, Slater, and McCourty remember.

Pepperidge Farm remembers..

That first interception really sucked ass. Didn't help that BB couldn't just give Welker a break and let him play the first drive too. Like, I understand the whole respecting other coaches thing but it's the playoffs. Figure out some other way of disciplining him. Not that it broke the camel's back or anything.

Could've been our first Brady-Rodgers SB but I get the feeling Rodgers torches that defense anyway

I guess that is the point of the article . Not just team comparisons. all the issues about the young team/bad defense/bad secondary were not ever considered by anyone including in the media when the pats faced the jets after beating them 45-3 at home a few weeks earlier. people thought pats were going to win it all in 2010 and after the loss we now point to all the issues with the team. So who knows what other things our current team will get exposed of which everyone seems to conveniently ignore ? hopefully nothing enough to stop them.

LB's not as good......DL not as good.....OL not as good

8 rookies and 2nd year guys starting........
Yes but did you really think pats were going to lose to the jets at home because of all those issues you just pointed out ?

The 2010 offense was very effective, but it was a lot more smoke-and-mirrorsy than this year's. Against all odds, it looks like Brady's actually become a better QB since then. We have a more versatile group of receivers, and therefore can attack more parts of the field. We have a more versatile RB corps, and most importantly a significantly better OL, and therefore we have a power run game that we can resort to when defenses try to flood the short zones.

Basically, the 2010 Patriots offense was really good at one or two things, and if you took them away, that was pretty much it for them. It was hard to take those things away, but if you could do it you could beat them. The 2016 Patriots offense isn't as good at any one thing as those 2010 Pats were, but there's a lot of things that can do well enough to thoroughly beat a defense over the course of 60 minutes. I think this is actually the result of a bit of a philosophical shift on Belichick's part that came about largely as a result of how 2010 ended.

One other point: there aren't any coaches in these playoffs that worry me quite like Rex Ryan did. Say what you want about Rex, but he had a dominant D assembled for him then, and he knew how to scheme against us. I'll be surprised if anyone in the AFC playoff picture this year can pull off anything approximating that.

And this is all without accounting for the defense, which, while I probably have more concerns about it than most posters here, is clearly a whole lot better than 2010's.
