Report: surgery for Gronk

How is it telling?

It is his usual back specialist:

We heard the same crap when Brady went to LA for his knee. These guys have every right to choose their own doctor, I have had a number of significant surgeries including two this year and only allowed doctors I trusted 100% to operate on me.

I haven't read the whole thread yet but...Am I the only one that is not too bothered by this news? We finally actually have some other weapons on offense. I don't think this team lives and dies by Gronk like it used to. I mean it sucks, he is a special player but I think they will be fine. I'm more concerned about the defense down the stretch against tougher teams.

Yes

My fault, I missed that....didn't realize it was the same doc as before. It just seemed to me that a family friend breaking the story and him having surgery not in Boston was curious. May be another example of the gronk family and pats doctors not seeing eye to eye.

To be fair I doubt that he got his post Seattle diagnosis from only Price but given his history of back issues it most probably involved a group of specialists at MGH.

Kinda doubtful they would miss something big. Similarly - and this is just speculation - I doubt that this was diagnosed today given how he was medically prohibited from attending that hospital event.

So my glass half full take on this is that BB & co activated Brissett fully aware of the situation which either means that there is no realistic chance for Gronk to be back this year and he will go on IR in the next few days or that it might be a "smaller" procedure and he will be back on the practice field after the regular season.

Whether he will be cleared for full contact practice in time to really participate is a different story anyway.

Again thats my optimistic take on the few clues we have right now.

Let's be honest.

Don't blame Thomas - - it was a perfectly clean hit.

Blame Belichick and the medical staff for putting him out there unnecessarily on Sunday.

It is an inconvenient truth. Earl Thomas did his job and he did it honestly. The Patriots committed malpractice.

I love the Patriots. But honestly, if he sued them for this, He should clean their clocks in court on this.

You really think at this point Team Gronk is only going off the opinion of Patriots doctors and not having their own doctor(s) checking Gronk out for an injury?

Contingency plans are in place I see.

So if he suffered the injury in the Seahawks game, and rather then getting surgery a week ago, he instead played the Jets game with an already ruptured disc?

For all the people who complain that he's cautious with his body and maybe doesn't always buy into the timeline that the team wants to set for him... well, here you go. Stuff like this is exactly why the players would be smart to get second opinions on every injury and maybe not have a ton of faith in the team doctors' opinions on this stuff. In hindsight, it's pretty clear he shouldn't have played last week. The Pats are the best in the business and I give them the benefit of the doubt most of the time, but they really screw themselves sometimes by putting guys out there when they shouldn't be.
I think after his arm fiasco, they have really managed gronk with kid gloves. So I dont know they are at fault here. Maybe they are. But its not clear when he suffered the injury. Some said it was the jets game, and this report says seahawks. And he was in good spirits after the seahawk game so who knows. We need to wait and watch for more info on this IMO.

Yep, the offense scored less than 20 in seven of Brady's nine losses (plus a VERY soft 21 against the Jets).

Yes, it's usually most of the team that craps the bed in these losses. And just to be clear, I don't put it on Brady. I think he's played well in a lot of his playoff losses, including the two SB losses (he played well enough to win those two games.) It's usually the OL and/or receiving corps that crumbles.

No Super Bowl this year.

After that arm injury i dont think any other player has been handled with cotton gloves more than gronk . Even the slightest tweak they have kept him out. I dont know where they committed malpractice. Plus gronk has many doctors and people advising him, not just the pats. Do you think pats said, go and play, you are alright and no one from gronk's team said anything ?

I remember at the start of the season people were questioning why we had 4 TEs on the roster of Gronk, Bennett, Harbor and Derby...

Apparently Belichick changed his mind and felt the same way and now we're left with....a gimpy Bennett and some random PS TE from the Bengals.

Sigh...

He should have never made the trip! He injured himself on that bomb. He reinjured it. Now this offense has no gronk. They have always depended on him. Now it's gonna be all wrs and some bennett but he ain't gronk.

You're reaching, I understand why because there's a history there, but you're reaching.

Sounds more like he should sue MGH. If he was cleared by the medical staff (run by Price and MGH) there is nothing that BB or anyone else in the organization did wrong.

Again, do you people really think after 2012 Team Gronk is really going off the sole opinion of the Pats medical team? Absolutely no way in hell they are, Pats medical team gives their opinion and Team Gronk's medical team gives their opinion. It's why there was a joint statement from the Pats and Team Gronk last year after he took that shot to the knee and missed a game

Sources: Rob Gronkowski to have back surgery tomorrow
Gronk landed hard after diving for a pass Sunday against the Jets and began feeling tingling in his back, which is why he departed the game and didn't return. At first, the Patriots didn't believe it was all that serious, as evidenced by their decision yesterday to use their injured reserve/designation for return tag on third-string quarterback Jacoby Brissett. And after the medical staff recommended Gronk to skip Tuesday's event at Boston Children's Hospital, Gronk had been cleared to attend another event later this week.

Gronkowski has an impinged nerve, and he actually believed it was a hip issue until he had an MRI last night that revealed the herniated disc.

That all signified a dramatic turn for the worse with the decision to undergo surgery.

THIRD back surgery

If it is unrelated to the other two and in a completely different area of the back, the other two surgeries may have nothing to do with this one. And one of the back surgery was just a clean up.

We know nothing about where this ruptured disc is. I think his problems in the past were his lower back. If he ruptured a disc in his upper back, I don't think it will affect his previous problems. Who knows?
