Or, perhaps, more accurately--for those of you using that term, what do you mean by it?

[There's another question I want to ask, but I want to be sure that the question makes sense first. ]

It's another name for a Pacifier to stop a baby from crying.

LOL, yeah. Allegedly, they are supposed to pacify babies.

Mine couldn't care less, of course, but, according to my mom, I was addicted to mine. She threw it away when I was 3 and pretended I lost it.

The baby pacifier is the literal term. It is used in sports as a player a fan or talking head has blind loyalty for and will defend no matter what the situation is. For example, on WEEI Tom Brady is Pete Shepard's binky. No matter what Brady does, Sheppard will make excuses for him. Brady could throw five INTs and it would be "the receivers didn't get open" or "Brady had no protection".

Binkys are such a pain in the @ss. Always losing them. Getting dirty. Kids scream when they lose them in the crib. We bit the bullet with our kids and threw them away when they hit 6 mos old. I digress.

Ok...back to football.

I think the term (in reference to sprts) comes from a criticism of Kansas City journalist Jason Whitlock's annual early-in-the NFL seaon story about how Jeff George should be starting for an NFL team over [insert under achieveing QB here.] Whitlock played HS football woth George and thinks he was never given a fair chance despite his many blown opportunities

Another journalist, labeld the Jeff George story Whitlock's binky. It's his go to stance regardless of any evidence to the contrary. As a previous poster mentioned Brady's infallability is Pete Sheppard's binky. Ron Borges had his anti Bellichick Binky. Another example would be Joe Theisman's annoying habit of justifying all of his stupid opinions with "When I played for Joe Gibbs..."

There's nothing worse than seeing a 4 year old running around with one 'cause mom and dad can't stand to hear the kid cry. The longer that they use one, the greater the chance for orthodontic problems later one as teeth erupt out of normal alignment. I tell parents to get rid of it or save their money for braces...
Just my $0.02 as a DMD..........
