This story got be thinking about when I played for the Quincy Giants back in 1969. This was a time when NO teams had black QB's, the Pats drafted a black QB, from Grambling I think or one of the Southern Black Colleges, and, since we were a farm club of their's sent him down to play with us.

I can't for the life of me remember his name, but I was in awe of the kid since he was about 4" taller than me and about 25-30 lbs heavier, and a lot faster besides. He had a gun for an arm and everyone was pretty excited he was going to play for us. Even us guys on the defense. However after about 2 weeks and just before the season started, he was gone.

Evidently (as the story goes) he got homesick and was never comfortable "up north" to begin with. I never knew what happened. If someone with better research skills than I can dig up his name and what happened to him, I'd appreciate it.
They did draft players from Gambling around that period but didn't see a QB here. Another college maybe?

Is this the guy?: Alabama A&M sports history: Onree Jackson drafted by NFL's Boston Patriots

When drafted by the New England Patriots, he became the first black quarterback in the National Football League. Returned to Huntsville in 1970 to coach at Calvary Hills. Later an assistant coach at Lee High for 12 years...now teaches government at Lee. - Huntsville - Madison County Athletic Hall of Fame - Alabama

FYI- In 1969 the Pats were the FIRST NFL franchise to draft a black QB specifically to play that position. His name was Onree Jackson from Alabama A&M in the 5th round. And as a side note, for 2 weeks I got to play with him, with the Quincy Giants.

He left Boston before we started our season though because he got homesick. (so the story went) I imagine the culture shock must have been pretty big for a country boy coming to Boston. Not the most welcoming city for a black man in those days, I'm ashamed to say.

Marlin Briscoe who started for the Broncos was drafted before Jackson, but he was drafted to be a DB.....and coincidently I also played with him too, though we were sadly only teammates in the summer.

So that NYPost fraud, can stick THAT in his pipe too

Thanks for this. I found him, as I posted, but I could not find out what happened to him when he went home. Good to know that he had a productive life and stayed in football for a while. What could have been. I guess timing is everything.

What a doosh nozzle

Totally not-shocking fact: The Patriots have never had a black QB start a game in their 57-year history. Jacoby Brissett would be the first.

Um, not anti-Patriots. Until Warren Moon in the '80s there were no black QBs. We've had like 8 since then. (I'm going back to Hogeson and crap.) How many of the Brown's many QBs were black? Jets QBs? Dolphins QBs?

When have the Giants ever started a black QB? The jets have only done so recently.
Giants were never going to hire hometown boy Vince Lombardi because he's Italian

Also, Giants were never going to hire Belichick because they did not like him

It's one thing to say this about ANY team but it's another thing to say this about the Patriots, the most successful team in the last 15 years.

Should the Patriots have interrupted their win streak, benched Brady, and signed Mike Vick to appease this guy?

It's amazing that things like these get by the editors. But I suppose it's not that crazy, it's drawing a reaction and that is news gold.
Goodell will make Brady stand before the other 31 owners and apologize for not being black

So, in fact, the Patriots join the Celtics and Bruins as the first franchises to draft a black athlete, the Pats for their sports' most important position, otherwise in their respective sports...another feather in New England sports history's cap...Thank you, moron!

Our...and the NFL's...loss

So glad he's led a successful life

Surprised this hasn't happened yet

"So Bill, have you always been a racist, is that something you guys talk about in the war room when looking at a black quarterback?"

Hubbuch crushed. I love it when a "news" douche gets publicly pwned.
