I pulled this from Shaughnessey's article this evening. I read through the list of names and it gave me chills and understand how fortunate we really are here.

We are the town with Manny Ramírez, Tom Brady, Kevin Garnett, Daisuke Matsuzaka, Randy Moss, Ray Allen, Curt Schilling, Bill Belichick, Paul Pierce, David Ortiz, Adalius Thomas, Jonathan Papelbon, Tedy Bruschi, Josh Beckett, Rodney Harrison, Jason Varitek, Richard Seymour, and Eric Gagne. We have reasonable expectations of a World Series, a Super Bowl, and the NBA Finals. There never has been a better time to be a sports fan in Boston.

Re: OT: Reading this list gave me chills

I can remember 1986 when the Pats were going to play against the Bears, the Celtics were in the play-offs on their way to the NBA Finals and the Red Sox were looking like they were going to have a good year. OH, and the BRUINS were heading to the play-offs

Only 1 of 4 actually performed. But that was a GREAT year for Boston Sports.

Clemens, Rice, Evans, Bird, McHale, Ainge, Parrish, Bourque, Middleton, Millbury, Hannah, Morgan, James, Fryar, Marion, Nelson, Tippett.

1985-1986 Matches up with now very easily. I don't remember another time in sports when all 4 Boston teams were in contention for their respective championships.

Re: OT: Reading this list gave me chills

2001-2002 was a great year for Boston sports. Not as many names obviously but...

Pats won the SB
Celts were in the Eastern Conference Finals
Bruins were the #1 seed in the East going into the playoffs
Red Sox...I dunno
Revolution (lol)...I'm pretty sure they were in the MLS Championship

The red sox were the wild card i believe and the revs made the finals and lost i am pretty sure

on a side tangent can anyone else name the last professinal sports team in New engalnd (well technically 2)

Best Days ever to be a Boston Sports fan?

I wasnt sure which forum this truly belonged so if it needs to be moved....

besides the obvious days like 2/3/02 or the Sox winning the WS.....where does today rank, getting Kevin Garnett and Gagne?

I remember a day in April 2002, the Celtics and Bruins both won playoff games, Derek Lowe pitched a no-hitter, and we got a #1 for Bledsoe.

There are actually numerous professional sports teams in New England. Its just a matter of what level of professional sports you are talking about. Besides the Red Sox, Bruins, Celtics, Patriots and Revolution, you also have the Providence Bruins, Lowell Devils (previously the LockMonsters), the Worcester Sharks (formerly the Ice Cats), the Manchester Monarchs, the Portland Winter Hawks (formerly the Pirates and the Mariners), AND the Hartford Wolfpack. You also have the Pawtucket Red Sox, Lowell Spinners, and Nashua Pride.

And that just off the top of my head.

the mid-70's, my friend! the Havlicek/Cowens Celtics won titles in '74 and '76, the Don Cherry Bruins were in 2 straight finals '77 and '78, the Red Sox were Championship contenders from '75 thru '78, and the Patriots '76 thru '78 were as talented as any team in the NFL.

At that point in time, from 74-77, I was in Oklahoma and England. And went from Diapers to training pants to briefs.. Getting to watch those games wasn't something I would have been able to do, let alone, understand.

* Thore were good years. You've a better memory than I.

My brother and I bought the LP "The Spirited Patriots of '76" shortly after its release. During that wonderful season, in consecutive weeks, the Pats defeated the defending SB champion Steelers at Pittsburg, and the future SB champion Raiders at Foxborough.

I stayed up for all of the Celtics' triple-overtime win vs. Phoenix on Friday night, and then took an SAT exam the next morning. John Havlicek was an amazing player, and we thought that Glenn MacDonald would amount to something. But why did Red have to trade Paul Westphal for Charlie Scott?

The Dead Sux began the season with a new pitcher, legendary Ferguson Jenkins, and ended it, essentially, in Yankee Stadium in a brawl during which Bill Lee had his left arm torn by Billy Martin's Brownshirts.

The Bruins began the season without Bobby Orr and Phil Esposito for the first time in a decade, but the Lunch Pail AC, with their best HC (besides Terry O'Reilly) in their last 35 years, was already born.

Good times, good times...

I hate to rain on everyone's parade, but big names don't equal championships (though it is a nice list).

Until proven otherwise, the best time in Boston sports was 2004, when both the Red Sox and Patriots won championships.

I was going to say that, but it's even better than that. Actually the Pats won TWO championships - they won SB 38 in February 2004, the Red Sox won the World Series for the first time in 86 years in October, then the Pats won Super Bowl 39 in February 2005, but it was nominally the 2004 season. For fans of New England sports at large, you can add in that both the UConn men and women's basketball teams won NCAA national championships that year.

Wow Glenn MacDonald!!! I'm sure you guys don't know this nor care, but the Philippines started a professional basketball league in the 70's. When Glenn MacDonald came here (must have been late 70's or early 80's) he became a legend in Philippine Basketball (as did Billy Ray Bates who was amazing).

At the time there were two teams who dominated the Professional league over here much like the Lakers and Celtics were in the 80's. Glenn played for another team and he almost singlehandedly broke that monopoly. He gained a lot of fans because of that.

I remember riding the Green line in April 2002. It was a beautiful day and I was on my way to the Red Sox game where Derek Lowe pitched his no hitter. The Bruins were in the playoffs, so were the Celtics and my beloved Patriots had just won their first Super Bowl. And you could literally feel the excitment in this city -- even native Bostonians were talking and sharing their stories where they were, how they felt.

I'm not a basketball fan but I am excited about KG. It's fun to be in the city and it's fun to feel like your team had a chance at a championship.

Where were you living when you were in the PI?

I did 2 six-week deployments at Cubi Point NAS in the early '80s.

PI = Paradise Island: Sex, Drugs (and San Miguel beer), and Rock and Roll.

Too bad that Mount Pinatubo erupted and ended it all, though I guess we were downsizing there, anyway.

Thank you for adding UConn to that list.

The Celtics and Bruins also both made the playoffs in 2004, each losing in the first round. Over all, January 1 2004-the first Sunday in February 2005 was the best 13 months in New England sports history.
