Can Pats win SB with Hobbs and Gay as starters?

with the backs we have now including Meriweather...its just possible he wont have a starting spot come week 10. and if he cant showcase his talent, he wont be getting many big offers. cant imagine he is so stupid to think he can sit till week 10 and have his starting spot guaranteed. with harrison, seau and wilson back plus thomas..it should be an easier job for the db's. they are going to have to be pretty sad for BB to just automatically put asante back in.

Well, if I know Belichick, the fact that Asante sat out will have zero effect on his decisionmaking. I don't think Belichick will for a second even remotely consider anything other than what gives him the best chance to win each week, and if he thinks that's Asante, Asante will play.

I hope to God they cant.

Really liking our matchups vs them come week 1.

The Pats however always find a damn way to win.

I'll open up this question to anyone who has better insight into what I think is a big problem, no matter how well Meriweather performs in camp. I think they need help at corner. What do you all think? Is it more likely the club can make arragements to get Samuel in quicker? Go ahead be honest. I can accept any negative responses. lol

Of course they can, cause Brady will still be QB.

Haven't the pats taught even their own fans this much?

The bigger issue than corner is the play at safety and LB.
We had the SB in our grasp but the play at safety and LB in the 2nd half of the AFCC game cost us the Lombardi.

We would have won the SB last year with the corners we have in camp today, had we gotten better play for 1 half from the LBs and safeties.

What has changed?

LB. Thomas, Seau and Brown are here. Vrable and Colvin both missed time during that half.
S. Well, pretty much anyone we put out there will be better than what we played with in that second half. Harrison, Wilson, Meriwhether are all new players to the team compared to what we had on the field in that half of football.

There has been 1 single case of our corners being exploited and costing us games in the BB era. That was early 2005 when Starks was being terrorized.

The quality of play at corner in the BB era has an awful lot to do with TEAM defense. I think if all stay healthy, including expected improvement from Sanders, we will have BOTH the best set of safeties and best set of LBs in the BB era.

While Harrison and Wilson at their peaks were excellent safeties, there was never any depth to speak of.

The only time the LB corps could compare to what we have this year was in 2004. Even then, we had a 3man rotation at OLB, with a recovering Colvin. Thomas will be an improvement, especially in terms of team defense and coverage ability over Mcginest of 2004. Instead of that 3 man rotation, all 3 will play full time, replacing the weakness of that group, Ted Johnson, with Seau and Brown coming off the bench for depth, not to mention any contributiuons from the younger LBs.

I think that we will field the best defense of the BB era this year. 03 was an unbelievable defense, and we do not have Ty Law, but on the DL, at LB, and at safety we are at least as good, and deeper.
I'll trade a little less overall ability at the corner position for an improved team defense at the other 9 spots plus depth every day of the week.

Re: Can Pats win SB with Hobbs and Gay as starters?

So I have to ask why you think Samuel will not be playing in the SB? I thought the worst case scenario is that he holds out until week 10.

Sure the Patriots could win the SB with Hobbs and Gay, but I'd rather not try. I think Samuel isn't going to pass on those $450K weekly checks.

This is a question that's so good I wish I'd asked it.

:0)

I'm not sure why we've both gotten nothing but radio silence on the answer, with one exception.

I think it's either one of two things: (1) most of us are also red sox fans too, so doomsday thinking is reflexive, or (2) people are assuming without saying it that Asante will mail it in or not be given a spot in game 11.

We got to superbowl 39 with Troy Brown, Randall Gay, and Earthwind Mooreland, and Asante Samuel as our top 4.... I think we can get by with James, Merriweather, Hobbs, Gay, Wilson, Richardson.
