Bryan Stork - Someone needs to step in

Here's your paper cut and lemon juice.

Still too soon?

Sad but true. Still would consider him a success if he retired today. 4th rounder who solidified our ol when he got on the field week 5 of 2014 which was a huge factor in winning it all.

Yikes. For his own long-term health, I hope he calls it a career. If he decides to keep playing then I respect that of course--it's his life and his career, and therefore his call--but I really hope he doesn't.

He's got nothing to be ashamed of if this is the end of the road for him. He accomplished a hell of a lot in college and in a brief NFL career.

I was just having some fun. Though Mike Wright was one of those guys that played better than most people (outside of NE) would have believed.

But, what you did was beyond a paper cut. That's like someone twisting the knife. Heck even Dion Lewis blowing out his knee last year would have been too far

I Don't.. Not with Cooper, Mason, Jackson, Kerbyson, Thuney and Karras inside also.. By all accounts, Karras has been better in practice than Kline..
I just see Kline's versatility and experience as benefits, particularly when he was playing very well for the first 8-10 games last year until injury.

He should be worthy of a backup spot--in my opinion. They liked him enough to extend him last season, so I definitely think he has the upper hand on some guys like Jackson, Cooper, and Kerbyson.

While it's probably best that he retire, why would he right now? He got injured in practice. It's a football related injury. If he retires, he's out - out of the money, out of the medical benefits and out of the NFL. He would be smarter to wait until he's put onto the IR, wait out the year, get paid a full year's salary and retire in the off season. That way, he gets a full year of pay, full medical as he recovers and another year in the NFL retirement pool.

Yea there is a win-win somewhere.

For example, the Pats released Mike Wright and saved $2.2m. Clearly he never made it back.

If the Pats cut Stork they'd only assume ~$240k in dead cap.

I'm sure there are rules in the CBA that prohibit teams cutting players who are hurt.

I assume if they went that route they'd figure out some kind of injury settlement but not sure of the Ts and Cs..

I know at one time it took five seasons for a player to become a vested NFL pensioner. I wonder if that still applies.

It's 3 now. If he gets credit for this year (his third), he'll get a pension.

I hope there is a difference in the settlement terms between a guy with concussion history and a guy with a bad shoulder.

No, he's not. The last CBA changed how things are done. Because it was a football injury, the new CBA guarantees him up to 1M for the year following. So insurance would pay this year and next. He will also get full medical benefits for the next 5 years..

But that's not true if he retires, is it? When you retire, don't you give up all salary?

I stated at the time that Bill should've drafted Russell Jethroe Bodine if he wanted a Center at #105.

Concussions can happen to anyone, but Bodine was simply the better prospect ahead of Stork.

And I still believe that Shaq Mason's best postion here is at Center, anyway.

He was solid for us when healthy, I liked him a lot, but it's time for him to retire, concussions ruin lives and cause severe brain damages later in life, he should call it a career while he can still walk on his own.

Football is a violent sport.

Look at the link that @robertweathers posted.

The first happens regardless of being vested. Also, a Football injury automatically kicks in the insurance coverage.
  • 5 years of Free Medical Insurance after retirement: $78,725 ($15,745 annually for family coverage) or $28,075 ($5,615 for single coverage) These amounts are based on the average annual cost of medical insurance policy for 2012.
  • Extended Post-Career Medical and Dental Benefits: After the 5 free years of medical coverage, the NFL is now allowing players who are vested and have a credited season in 2011 to continue coverage under the NFL’s group medical insurance program. The NFL is obligated to pay no more than $16 million annually for these benefits under the new CBA. Former players must pay the annual deductible of $600 for individual and $1,200 for a family policy. This goes up to $850 for an individual policy and $1,700 for a family policy for years 2016-2020. The value of this benefit is enormous. Due to the injuries players sustained in the NFL, many are not able to find private insurance on the open market that will cover them. If they can find coverage, it is very expensive due to their pre-existing conditions.

I read that and didn't see anything in there that would make it the right choice for Stork to retire.
