Pats may be trading up a bit to grab a DT.

No need, there will be plenty of good options available in the end of the 2nd round.

I guess it makes some sense - if they weren't in love with their DT depth and this draft is stocked full of DT talent, may as well trim some guys and get younger at the position in the draft.

Kind of expected this with so many DTs available in the draft. I think Kitchen might've stayed through training camp and preseason if Knighton wasn't signed.

Or, maybe, just maybe, this is the same deal as with Gaffney, and they'll be re-signing him after he clears waivers?
Could be. My comment on this will be conditional then.

If we bring him back: He sucks
If he isn't brought back: He's awesome

Still leaves the Pats with the following:
Branch, Knighton, Brown, Kearse, Kuhn, Vellano at DT.

And I expect at least 1 DT possibly DT/DE combo to be drafted as well.

The Patriots can replace them with rookies they can control beyond 2016 at low salaries.
Part of the pre-draft culling to free up some room for UDFAs.

Ditto for a couple of other players on that list (Marcus Kuhn, Joe Vellano).

I hope Jones clears waivers (he should, though) and the Pats re-sign him.
