The Patriots should be able to sign any of their own players fairly easily as far as the cap situation goes.

Outside of Patriots players who are you looking at as the biggest targets?

Looking at the FA market this year i feel like there are not many great fits without trades.

Guys like Marvin Jones and Ladarius Green seem like good options but not headliners.

You could easily get a quality backup OT which would be nice. You could easily improve the OGs but they only help you so much as it is not traditionally a high impact position.

RB would be very out of character for BB to spend a lot of money on.

On defense there are plenty of good pass rushers but if you are keeping Nink/Jones/Sheard it makes you wonder who you sit if you pick up a 4th guy.

I do hope the Patriots are aggressive bringing guys in but i don't like the market for our needs.

- Lions hire Patriots Director of pro scouting Bob Quinn as their GM.
- Calvin Johnson refuses to play/trying to force his way out Barry Sanders style
- Lions receive large cap relief by trading Johnson
- Patriots are a clear Superbowl favorite with a glaring hole at outside WR1 and in the opposing conference
-Lions run a 4-3 defense with a hole at DE across Ansah

If Megatron is willing to walk away from all the money is owed - nearly $70m in salary - I suppose it stands to reason that he'd be willing to negotiate a short-term deal for some of that money in a different situation. The other side of that is that if he's that willing to walk away from the game (forget the money), then maybe he's not the type of all football all the time type of guy who'd be that interested in playing just to win.

Fun to think about, but count me as someone not on the "trade a DE entering his prime years for a 30+, injury prone WR that has publicly stated he wants to retire" train.

Unless someone completely blows the Pats away with an offer of 1st round pick in 2017 or something, I'd rather keep Jones for the 2016 season and increase our odds of a SB run..worst case we get a 3rd round compensatory pick for him if he leaves via FA.

I'd love to see Calvin on the team, but there is no way I'd trade Chandler Jones to make that happen. I honestly don't think they'll make much of a splash in FA as far as any big names, since most of the big name priorities are all the studs currently on the roster finishing out their rookie deals...

They'll run out of money fast once they extend Collins, Hightower and Butler

Cook and Forte i bet they like both alot

Possibly SAnu

i dont think the pats will do too much as far as trading and signing big name players but just for fun here are a few moves i think the pats could do if they wanted to.

sign Haloti Ngata to a one year contract he wont coast much at this point in his career, sign Jermaine Kearse, to replace Lafell wont be as cheap as LaFell but should not brake the bank, sign Jahri Evans, i think he could be got for 4 million on a one year deal and trade for jamaal charles KC has a lot of big name FA's on defense and alredy have two young RB's so freeing up cap space is a most and for 5 million per the pats get the biggest game braker RB in the NFL.

again i dont think the pats will do any of the moves i just said but i think they are moves that could be done

Could megatron be released by wed? I think theres a 24mil cap that kicks in on wed but could be wrong

Extending HT should save cap room.

Yea it will definitely save money this year, but he'll be one of the larger cap hits on the team in future years along with Butler, etc.. A couple solid vets on 1-2 year deals would be nice for a push at a SB, but im still waiting to see some of our studs get an extension

Rueben Randle, WR.
Marvin Jones, WR.

Both are 25-26yrs old. Both have played well. Both are tall. Both can go vertical, if needed.

I hate these nickel/dime WRs that did nothing: Brandon Gibson, Tyms, Chris Harper.

I really really wanted Emmanuel Sanders as a Patriots back when Patriots had the chance.

marvin for sure.
Imagine BB pulling a rabbit and getting Calvin and Marvin it would be insane.

It starts on the O line.
Regardless of new weapons for Brady at WR, RB, or TE……without sufficient time to even throw the quick strikes….without an interior line that has the power to not surrender ground in the run game……this offense will continue to be vulnerable to quality D lines.
At lets not kid ourselves…..even when healthy, the Pats tackles were not lockdown pass blockers and the offense depended on quick strikes because Solder could only be counted on for making initial contact with a DE, a huge upgrade over the year end patch job, but still far from lockdown domination.
I fully expect BB to emphasize OL in the FA market and bring in at least one certified starter….most likely a guard. BB always fixes glaring problems and this OL sucktitude is their most glaring.

Too bad Boldin is so old.. Would have made an ELITE patriot a few years ago.... Same with Steve Smith. And on a lesser extent, Jherico Cotchery

Most wanted Bolden back in 2010 when he was a FA but BAL paid him $22m over 3 years....

Unless your last name was Moss no WR has ever seen that kind of money here.

Patriots' greatest free-agent impact starts with Matt Forte, Dwayne Allen

I like this list from Mike Reiss a lot (beware, ESPN link). To save you the click even though it is Reiss, I will tell you his list: RB Matt Forte (Bears), TE Dwayne Allen (Colts), DT Akiem Hicks (Pats), WR Chris Hogan (Bills), WR Rod Streater (Raiders).

Of course we would all love Forte and Allen and want Hicks back but his picks of Hogan and Streater are interesting. Hogan is a RFA with the Bills, but the Bills are up against the salary cap, so he may not be tendered. He's 6'1" and 220 lbs with 77 receptions the last two years. Streater also might be a hidden gem of sorts - he was playing really well before getting hurt in 2014 and then got lost in the shuffle of new coaches and players last year and now is a FA. 6'2", 195 lbs, has run a sub 4.4 forty-yard dash I believe.

That's an interesting list. One name that occurred to me that's worth keeping an eye on is Leonard Hankerson. He's with the Bills currently but it'll be interesting to see what we do if they don't hold on to him.

That offer still has me all confused

It's simple. I'd dump a few more players and trade away all my draft picks this year for future picks and then I'd go after;
WR's Alshon Jeffrey or Marvin Jones
TE's Ladarius Green or Dwayne Allen
CB's Josh Norman or Janoris Jenkins
T's Cordy Glenn or Russell Okung
S's Eric Berry or Eric Weddle
RB's Doug Martin or Matt Forte
LB's Von Miller or Bruce Irvin
LB's Danny Travathan or Derrick Johnson
G's Kelechi Osemele or Alex Boone
DT's Damen Harrison or Nick Fairley
DE's Muhammed Wilkerson (franchised?), Malik Jackson or Vernon Oliver
And I'd stand pat at QB, K and P.
That should just about cover it.
