Now about that PI call on Malcom.....

Again the PI call lead to zero points.

looks like pretty good coverage to me. his right hand was in a fist but didn't appear to be grabbing decker's jersey, and in any event he didn't turn decker's body. his left arm swiped at the ball and didn't appear to restrict decker's left arm. even with the tight coverage, decker could have caught the ball but didn't.

Not sure how anyone can look at that and think it is a good call

Again the PI call lead to zero points.

The PI was on 3rd and 4th, jests were on their 26 yard line. Clock stopped with 1:25 to go and the Pats had 2 TOs.

PI gave them a fresh set of downs, they got 16 yards on the next play, Pats eventually stop them on the next set of downs but the clock had been run down to 30 seconds.

Ya they didn't get any points but that PI kept the Pats from having a shot to get into FG range to win it.

true, but it would have been 4th down at the jets' 26-yard line with about 1:20 left. the patriots would have had good field position, 2 timeouts, and plenty of time to get into position to kick a game-winning field goal. instead, the patriots got the ball back at their own 20 with 0:25 left.

edit: beat me to it!

It wasn't the reason Pats lost the game and way to many people still think it happened in OT.

It's one of the possible reasons. Say the refs don't throw the flag, jests punt and the Pats have about 1:20 with 2 TOs and start at the 35 yard line and only need to go 30-35 yards to get in Gostowski's range.

on the marshall long TD, i'm not really seeing OPI. there's some hand fighting, and marshall might have given harmon a nudge which is why he motioned for a flag. it's very subtle though, and it looks like harmon wasn't really sure where the ball was so he was out of position anyway. i would say good non-call.

Yeah, that corroborates my original impression. Bad call. Simply excellent coverage by Butler.

Hand and arm wrapped around the receiver's back. The back judge will call that 10 times out of 10. You can argue about how iffy it is, but the Pats have both benefitted and been the victims of those types of calls. In the end, Butler knows better than that.

They also had a chance to do the same thing at the end of the first half against a similar defense that they scored against in the 4th quarter but **** themselves instead.

Maybe something a little less than 10/10.

Some interesting followup on this being an "uncatchable" pass.

Seeing the clip again, that is not pass interference. It's just a good pay. I've heard people like Collinsworth and Simms explain countless times that as long as your hand isn't grabbing or impeding they let you put your hand there.

That's a good non call. Harmon had his hand on Marshall. All Marshall did was push that hand away. Just some regular hand fighting that shouldn't get called.

True. That will go down as one of the worst blown calls of all time. The sports science on that bad boy was absolutely damning.

Like I said, you can argue about how iffy it is until the cows come home. Back judges have flagged those at an extremely high clip since Polian decided to water down the league before 2004. That's a call that has been made all the time.

I think you gotta take your Homer Glasses off on this one. His right hand has his jersey (Butler does a good job of disguising it with his fist, but he's clearly grabbing it) and his left arm is wrapped around the receiver.

The problem is that I don't think the receiver was going to catch the pass anyway, but there's no way that's not going to get called if the BJ sees the hand on the jersey.

Homer glasses? Oh piss off.

If they aren't going to call marshall's blatant push off for a TD or a banned celebration then they have no business making that call.

That's because the great majority of the time the defender actually has a grip on the jersey or is turning the receiver. Based on that replay Butler did neither. Maybe live the ref could see a jersey pull but it wasn't in the video replay.

ok, ok. Maybe "homer glasses" was trite and deserved a "piss off," but the call was legit. Expecting officials to be consistent, though, is a pipe dream.

The problem I have with the Butler DPI call is Chris Harris Jr. commits the same "penalty" multiple times in every game and he's rarely, if ever called for it. Christ I hope Minitron is back to embarrass him once more.
