CB Leonard Johnson chips in with solid work for the Patriots
  • New slot CB Johnson got a lot of snaps, and even started.
  • Ebner got 10 snaps at S.
  • Chandler only got 1 snap at TE; Williams, Cleveland and Cam Fleming all got more.
  • Mayo got ~80% of the snaps.
  • Collins, Butler and Ryan were the only defenders who went wire-to-wire.
Also, in Reiss' opinion, Hicks was the best DL in the game, notwithstanding Watt's participation.

putting hicks and branch out there helps block out the sun.....

they have some beefy boys at DT and it's good to see enough depth to keep 'em fresh the whole game

After just 4 days with the team, that's a heck of a testament to his intelligence and work ethic.

It's incredible how the Patriots have managed to collect DT specimens at the level of Hicks and Branch for next to nothing. That's sheer personnel magic.

It seems Mayo is going to step up and play a significant role for the last quarter of the season.

Very encouraging sign. I still believe he hasn't been 100% and that would explain his lack of snaps thus far. He looked solid last night.

Chandler is in the dog house finally. About 8 weeks too late.

I thought he was Inactive.

Rotational depth on the DL is something we've been lacking. Fantastic depth there
now. It's so important to give those guys a rest. Here are some of our defensive backups;
Sheard, Siliga, Easley, Mayo and Harmon. Some pretty good players there.

Easley only 12 snaps? Shouldn't a guy who was projected to be a top 10 pick if he wasn't injured in college be getting more snaps if he were playing anything like expected.

He got injured in the 2nd half. That lowered his snaps.

chandler wont be on the team next year.
asante cleveland plays more now lol

bill's still looking for the perfect #2 TE

Yes but I believe his overall point is that Easy only plays 25-30 snaps a game even when he is healthy.

Part of the thinking is that they a) want to manage his health, not wear him down and keep him explosive and b) have some very good players on the D-line that when out there add a ton of value and make plays.

Well first off, he went out injured 10 minutes into the 2nd half. Secondly, the defense was getting off the field quickly. Think they forced about 5 3 and outs on Houston's first 6 drives. Getting off the field quickly = less snaps played. Also Pats held the ball for 11 minutes more so the offense ate clock up, which is less snaps and time for the defense.

But over the last 7 games before last night Easley had been averaging 35-40 snaps a game

He played 40 in the Miami, Denver and NYG games and 35 against Buffalo and Washington. I think 30-35 is ideal for him. If he doesn't go out when he did. He might not have been up at that 35-40 mark but he would have been probably at 25.

I agree on the # of snaps. ~30 is about what he should get.

Its only a few snaps but I see him getting less than what you are listing. Your numbers might be including STs?

They use Easley as an interior pass rusher and it works well imo. He's got a hell of a jump off of the line.

But Hicks and Branch and Brown are going to get more snaps than him because they can all do more against the run.

Re: Easley et al., as a reference point the Seattle SB-winning team had 7 players with 40–60% of snaps. No one higher.

I think that's the future of d-line rotations, and it makes a ton of sense. Playing DL is extremely taxing, and we've all seen hundreds of instances of lines getting gassed in the fourth quarter and the run D and pass rush crapping out. When people talk about establishing the run and reaping the rewards late, this is what they're talking about. Fielding a stable of talented linemen with complimentary skills who platoon and keep each other fresh is a natural answer to it, if you can make it work.

Most teams just can't do it. Because of the salary cap, fielding a deep DL basically requires targeting undervalued players, having a lot of guys on rookie contracts, or skimping elsewhere on your team. The Pats have chosen the first two options. The DL is loaded with first rounders (Jones, Easley, Brown) and other teams' undervalued castoffs (Ninkovich, Sheard, Siliga, Hicks), plus Branch who makes a bit too much for me to call him undervalued but is solid in his own right. It's a great mix of premium talent and affordable depth. The Pats have basically borderline elite DL (they're a bit too suspect against the run for me to declare them definitely elite) and just as importantly have avoided spending big bucks in the process. There's a good chance that'll change after next season when Jones hits FA, but for the next year-plus we're in fantastic shape.

It seems odd that Coleman didn't get any snaps considering that he was healthy enough to be active. Obviously Johnson was playing well but you'd think they would have pulled butler and Ryan at the end of the game
