Commentary: Aqua's off-season rankings

So they pick up a few big names players and they go from being mediocre to the second best team in the league?!

Why can't people just read that damn thing? For the one millionth time, it's a ranking on how they did in the off-season, not how good their team is. Read, then ask questions!

And you write a weekly column? Huh? ;) What does "further a due" mean?

(I'm ragging you Aqua...we can all make spelling errors, but yours is funnier than Hell! :bricks:

I must say that I don't find your comments on the teams very objective. Clear favoritism for the Phins and clear animus for Pats, for ex. You have to at least fake some objectivity in order to write columns, unless they are tongue in cheek.

Yep, favoritism ranking them with the 20th best off-season and putting the Pats in the top 3. Makes sense.

Your Welker/Ginn remark is a joke. Probably your best receiver was lost (not to say Welker is elite in any way, but Chambers is garbage and we all know that) and you just say well, hey, we got an "electric" player, so who cares. Lame...

Well Welker was our 3rd best receiver and was a small slow slot guy in an offense that lacks speed. Picking up a guy who is one of the fastest in the NFL is certainly in upgrade in our offense. Welker may be an upgrade in yours, but was not of great use in ours.

We going through this again? He had the most catches and second most yards on your team last year.

You keep saying that catches don't count, only yards do, but how many of Welker's catches resulted in a first down?

You want to take away all those firsts and substitute punts for them next year? You want another high draft pick, do you? (Well, don't blame you, as you screwed up this year.)

Chambers showed flash one year and has underachieved every since.

Devalue slot receivers at your peril, and don't think a slot receiver is ineffective because of 40 times. Quickness is more important than speed. Slot reveivers are so important that the Colts took one in round one, even as their defense is falling apart around them.

Just admit it, the Dolphins screwed up by not giving him a higher tender.

Or do you think the Fins FO has a better record evaluating talent that the Pats FO.

ranking them with the 20th best off-season
Losing Welker will turn out to be the worst off-season move for your lousy off-season.

Your passing game will be crap. Of coure, you may not recognize the need for an intermediate yard, sure handed pass catcher and blame it on something else, but your passing game will tank.

im in between aqua and the patriot fans on the welker thing

Aqua - Welker was your best WR..how do u upgrade Welker by adding speed? Speed isnt his game. Ginn is not as smart..not as good of a route runner and certainly not in the hands category. Upside? Yes..but that will have to be seen.

Patriot fans: stop acting like Welker is amazing...hes an ordinary slot guy who can catch. Hes not a playmaker..he lacks size/speed..and can be shut down easily imo. as a returnman, people act like hes a top 5 return guy..our own guys averaged better than him . Dont say blocking..if anyone has blocking they can get some good yards.

It's not necessarily picking in terms of where team's where will finish, but just the talent level I think they have. Yes my picks would be differnt in a total prediction write-up but that's not the point of this article. It's only to measure wether the team betterd or made their team worse in the off-season.

It's actually full of errors, and during some of those statements you come off as someone who doesn't know much about the draftee's, some of the players you're talking about, and you leave a few important things out from these evaluations....I hope that wasn't your final version.

Ginn is made of glass, and recovers slow.....good luck with that one, especially after Meriweather nails him going across the middle :)

Why does everyone mention Banta-Cain as if he's a marquee pickup?

Because he can rush the passer. He's not marquee, but there are very few marquee guys available in free agency. But he was a guy that teams were after in the first week of free agency.

The bigger question is why would Cato June be considered marquee when the guy went a month without anybody wanting him.

zippo could have said the same thing about the Broncos, who you did proclaim as your AFC favorites. They add a few good players and suddenly we forget that they couldn't be the 49ers at home with a playoff spot on the line. I agree with you that they've had a great offseason, but they're still in line behind the Pats, Chargers, Colts, and Ravens in my book.

That's why I made a point in my post of saying that Welker is in no way elite, so I never said he was amazing.

But what you wrote makes no sense.
The Dolphins stunk in 2006, you say the had a below average off-season (20th out of 32) but they will IMPROVE to 8-8 and challenge for the playoffs. If they were bad, then got worse (if you are below 16th in off-seasons you got worse compared to the league) but will be a better team?

The Patriots, on the other hand were 12-4 and had the (in your opinion) 3rd best off-season, but they got worse. No team on their schedule improved more than they did (by your rankings) yet they will be worse this year.

That makes absolutely no sense. That is where the favoritism comes in.

Is that why he was your leading receiver?

If you are going to say Welker is medicore, go ahead, but that means your other WRs are less than medicore.

Its too bad you dont get paid for that column....maybe you could pay your bet off then huh??

Are you into S&M or something?? That is the only explanation I can come up with to explain why you still post here.

Aqua boy welched on his bet to me whereby I put $250 up against his $50 payable to the "Bread of Life". He lost his bet and did not send his check. In spite of winning - I still paid off (I had said I would, win or lose).

Aqua boys word is worthless.

Aqua boy cannot be trusted.

Aqua boy is a tremendous representative of a Dolphin fan. They deserve you and you deserve a miserable team like that.

By the way, your commentary sucks too......

hey fgssand whats "Bread of Life"?? Is it a charity??? If so is it for a good cause...my wife and I are looking into a charity to donate to kind of as a thanks to up above for the great half year we've had

There is a mod on the board called Miguel. PM him, and he can give you details.

Excellent point, Andy. This also forms my basis for labelling Aqua's analysis as unobjective. You beat me to it, and likely phrased it better than I could have.

I write weekley articles for www.thephinsider.com and here is my most recent installment concerning my off-season rankings.

2007 Off-season Rankings
... Snip

28. San Diego Chargers- What does a team that finished 14-2 need to do to improve? It’s not a matter of addition, but rather what that team lost. The Chargers have a brand new coaching staff after they fired Marty Schottenheimer, and lost Cam Cameron and Wade Phillips to coaching jobs. Norv Turner is the new coach and he has attempted to get a play maker at wide out with Craig Davis in the first round. The Chargers lost linebacker Donnie Edwards to division rival Kansas City. Their best addition may have just been not letting a beast on the line get out of town. The Chargers will be back in 2007 however.
Best add: Retaining Kris Dielman OG
Worst loss: Donnie Edwards LB
Outlook: 11-5. It’s difficult to do what the Chargers did last year and the AFC West is very tough.
I agree, it's very hard to do what SD did during the regular season. Lets not lose sight of the fact that the same holds true for EVERY team in EVERY division in EVERY year. I mean the best the Bears could do was 13 reg season wins in the last 3 years in a division that is clearly the weakest. Ok, the NFC west sucks hard also but over the last 3 years between the NFC North and West I'd say it's a tossup as to who sucked harder league wide.

Not to quibble but I'd like to see us offer at least a 12-4 year. :D Okay, maybe I am quibbling. ;)
