Poland waived

The Patriots announced that defensive back Denny Poland has been waived.

Poland, of Air Force, was signed by the Patriots as an undrafted rookie free agent on May 14, following a tryout at the Patriots’ rookie minicamp on May 12-13. He was a longshot to make the club.

Sorry, Denny.
But i never even added your name to my mock roster database.

There goes my "how many Pats players are named after countries?" trivia question.

At least I still have "how many Pats players are named after a substance that grows on the north side of trees?"

Are they at the point where they have to waive someone to sign someone else? [I forget what the new rules on roster limits are.]

No, they now have 86 players on their roster, but minus the 9 draft picks since they haven't been signed, and minus the 3 NFLEs too. That leaves 86-12 or 74, or 6 shy of the 80-man offseason limit.

Wow, eight comments for a player we knew had no chance of making the team. Make that nine comments.

Yeah but most aren't comments about Poland himself but instead how it ruins the Patriots trivia questions we were planing or if it means Seau is coming back.

What do you suppose is the point in picking up one of these longshots and then releasing him 3 days later?

To see if they have a chance at all...practice squad players..or...to be picked up later...

Maybe they thought Poland was a Turkey.

I'm thinking shadow roster, myself.

I think of the definition of shadow roster being players who like a lot and almost made the team but for competitional reasons they don't. Clearly they didn't really like Poland if he was only on the team for a few days in the middle of May.

Let's assume they signed him because they liked him and he was signed so they could work with him under some legal umbrella. He took leave from the Air Force to participate in Rookie Camp, leave is accrued at 2.5 days/month = 30 days/year; since he graduated from the Air Force Academy in 2006 he probably didn't have much more than that available to use, seems a kindness to spare him his earned vacation time if he's not making the squad. He's had a week at Gillette since being signed, in that time he could work with his position and strength & conditioning coaches to develop a training program. Next year he is eligible to transfer to the Air Force Reserve, if he followed this speculated training program his chances may be much better to make the team.

they wouldnt own the rights who still could sign anywhere

This is very true..but I don't see a zillion offers coming his way next year even...if he was a big time UDFA who just missed being drafted it would be one thing..but he's been out of school a year. My only question is about the military reserve list and how a player qualifies for that.
I agree with Box..having saved up vacation time..and knowing he mnight not be ready now..it might make sense to be looking more at next year.
