I assume that this is structured to give some cap relief

As part of Nate Solder's 2-year extension with Patriots, New England cannot use franchise or transition tag on him after 2017, per source.

Patriots OT Nate Solder signed a two-year, $20.62 million contract extension that ties him to New England through 2017, per NFL source.

The devil is in the details. It will be interesting to see when Miguel chimes in..

Damn. So 10.31M per year on average or is this just to buy them time next year? Curious to see how it is structured. I know LTs demand a lot of money but IMO he has not generally played like a 10M a year LT.

This would pretty much put him in the top 5 LTs money wise if it is a straight deal.

Good for team to keep that position stable for a couple more years. Would like to see how cap numbers change for this year.

I thought we had $3,000 cap space, how is this possible ? Capgate ?

I'm not convinced Solder is the best LT in the game, but he's far from the worst. The cost of replacing him through FA or the draft has always concerned me and now, at least for the next two years, it doesn't so I like this deal.

Solder is tall....he can see over bathroom stalls......memorize opposition play call sheets.
BB....always playing chess....five moves ahead. No more cameras.......bring in Solder. Brilliant

@RapSheet
#Patriots give Nate Solder $20M fully guaranteed at signing & can’t franchise tag him after. Highest % of guarantee for a top 5 veteran OT

This saves us money. It is likely that they converted the majority of his 2015 pay to signing bonus. I believe it was around 7.5 mill so it probably saved around 4 mill this year.

No kidding. Before dental insurance thats what braces cost.

Funny...the Pats couldn't even afford braces for a 10 year old...lol.

First two years fully guaranteed, 1.5m in pro bowl (500k per year) bonuses per Rapsheet

Very good news. Stick a capable LG beside him and he's top notch.

Hey, we don't have to pay a first rounder next year, might as well spend the money. Solder's good. Works for me.

The reporting isn't making any sense.. There is no way the deal could average 10.31M over the next 3 years as Rappaport claims.

Let's wait until the ACTUAL details come out.. And not the Mediots guesses..

I'm with you. I'm struggling with the motivation the Pats have in doing this deal at the structure that is being reported.

Solder is a solid player and clearly the Pats like him. I'm not convinced he is a top 5 LT in this league but having a player worse than Solder at the position could derail the entire season.

Well i would think he would still be on the 7.4M for this year. Then the 20M over the next 2 years. Just a guess. Nothing to back it up.

Well damn that's quite a bit. Hope it's the Solder from the playoffs and not the first four games + Chargers game. Team captain now too, never thought he was that kind of guy.
