Bill Polian on Bill Belichick

Polian had some interesting comments on his Sirius NFL radio show tonight. He was asked about some negative things he had said in the past about Belichick. He replied (paraphrasing and summarizing):

POLIAN: We had a very heated rivalry between the Colts and the Pats and, when I was in the middle of it, I wasn't able to be objective. Now that I'm away from it and watching game film from 12 Pats games a year preparing for broadcasts, I can be a little more objective. I would tell you that, in all of football, college or pro, nobody coaches technique to the players as well as Belichick and his staff. Nobody prepares game plans, week to week, as well as Belichick and his staff. And, nobody makes in-game adjustments as well as Belichick and his staff. And the difference is so large that there's really nobody in second place.

The last line especially is a shocker. Respect, although I wish during that heated rivalry he didn't work to basically unravel the NFL into the arcade game it's becoming- although I guess that was gonna anyways as soon as Goodell was charmed by some marketing schmuck.

It's a great compliment.

I posted in a thread a little bit ago about Butler being coached well and having the situational awareness to attempt to execute what he did for the team Sunday.

I have watched so many videos of BB where he will just walk up to a player and present a random scenario. He accepts that you don't have his experience with that scenario but he builds upon it by explaining the awareness you need to play at the highest level in the league.

Absolutely incredible leader.

I think when people look back, there will be 3 coaches that are regarded as the greatest ever. Lombardi, Walsh and Belichick.

Arguments will be made who was the best but without question those will be the best.

I think Belichick could win #5 and potentially #6 before it is all said and done, which would make him stand alone.

Polian is a different guy in this role. He was bad as the Indy GM, but I like him now, he's more than fair.

Polian is great on the radio. Very knowledgeable, speaks freely, very eloquent, objective. Like he said, he was in the middle of a heated rivalry and couldn't be objective back in his former role.

-hire a full-time staff of assistant coaches
-use a written playbook
-use a practice squad
-use many of the common plays now in everyone's playbook
-ignore race in player selection

Agreed. I'm not quite ready to say the BP is a good guy and all b/c back in the 2000s he was a real a-hole towards the Pats.

With that said, older people either mellow and gain a different perspective on things or become bitter and ignorant.

Seems like Polian is the former and Don Shula is the latter.

And our coach would agree wholeheartedly. I suspect he'd say that Brown was without peer, because of what you have above and more.
