Colts OLB Robert Mathis suspended four games

This is completely why the policy on drugs needs to be changed and fast. They suspend people for Weed and that really does a lot for the player in terms of players getting a physical advantage, ok! This would seem to be in the same breath of air were he was taking medicine that his Doctor said was fine to take to have a baby with his wife. He finds out that he wasn't supposed to take and he is suspended for starting a family.
The NFL needs to understand these things don't do things what think they do and should really look into changing it. The NFL has a large stick up their ASS on these matters and even Courts can look at case by case basis for matters but, in the NFL if you have something in your system you're out we don't care

I'm pretty sure every player is given a list of drugs that they cannot take. Maybe he should have consulted that list or his agent before taking them? That is, of course, if this is truly the reason for a positive test.

My point is the outdated aspects need to be readjusted as these things would seem to be not "performance enhancing" in any way. The fact is that they need to understand that people have lives outside of football and shouldn't always have to check with others when any other adult would be fine to take that course of action. I might be tested at work but, won't be fired for taking a pill to help with producing a child. The NFL is not the almighty although they sure act like it

I understand where you're coming from. I am just skeptical that's the reason why he flunked a test. He's now made himself look like a victim. His previous career high in sacks was 11.5 twice in 08 and 05. Now he gets 19.5 at age 32? I view it like the whole ADHD/Adderall thing. If you have a medical reason to take it, the NFL lets you. Why would a guy of Mathis' stature and success and longevity put something in his body that he didn't verify with the NFL as okay?

Agreed that the stats would justify skepticism in what he was taking and how/if it was helping. I just think its funny that the player has to give up his right of privacy to disclose what it is. He did so that the perceptions that many will have automatically after a season like and will start accusing before facts. The NFL always just comes out unscathed. He should knowing that taken better steps but, sometimes emotions (Mom cancer and Wife trying) get in the way, to bad. I'm don't even care more Mathis its the principle of the matter

Of course it was just fertility drugs he was using. Did he call Manny up for that excuse?

Look, I'm not sure any team's fans should adopt a critical posture when it comes to drug suspensions of players from other teams. Glass houses, you know?

The guy went from 8.0 sacks in 2012 to 19.5 sacks in 2013. you do the math.

in fact he has NEVER come close to 19.5 sacks in any other year of his career.
the guy averaged 10 sacks a season for his career before last year and it was his first season playing at rush OLB am not saying his right or wrong but lots of good pass rushers have big seasons at the tail end of there careers

Steroid users will use the drug Mathis took toward the end of their cycle, that's why it's banned in the NFL. I'm not sure if Mathis took the drug for legitimate reasons or if he was using. I just enjoy the fan reaction to these type of stories, people like to act like PED use in the NFL is uncommon. It happens more than people think, I can guarantee there have been Patriots on steroids that never got caught. Really not that hard to get pass the NFL drug testing or mask the samples.

Goodell was right to suspend him though and dismiss his excuses. Once you hear one players excuse (legit or a lie) for a banned substance you have to hear everyone's.

I believe the contract agreement prevents the NFL from disclosing the drugs detected, leaving the players free to claim Adderal or whatever.

I also believe that a medical condition (ADD, for example) can be used to get approval of such prescribed drugs. Players who get suspended are in immediate damage control, protecting their "brand." Don't think I'm taking Mathis, or Spikes when he was here, or Boldin, or anyone else's remarks at face value.

I would like the NFL to be able to announce the drug taken some point in the future. Letting these players lie and leave doubt in the fans minds is garbage.

Mathis was a lot of fun to watch last season. It's too bad he takes PEDs because it cheapens the achievements, but then again, a lot more players do the same thing and get away with it all the time. Mathis is unlucky/dumb to get caught.

When was the last time a player got suspended for violating the drug policy and came out and said it was steroids?....Exactly. It's possible Mathis is telling the truth but I don't believe anyone.
