Pope Francis has reaffirmed the reprimand of American nuns issued by his predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI, and endorsed the plan to have three bishops supervise an overhaul of the nation’s largest umbrella group of American nuns.

The announcement from the Vatican on Monday dashed the hopes of Catholic sisters and their supporters, who had hoped that the new pope might not want to meddle with women’s religious communities because of his experience in the Jesuits, a men’s religious order.

Archbishop Müller, according to a statement released Monday by the Vatican, had “recently discussed” the situation with Pope Francis, who was elected last month after Benedict resigned. Pope Francis “reaffirmed” the critical doctrinal assessment that the Vatican made of the nuns’ group last year, and endorsed the “program of reform,” the statement said.

The Vatican last year said in its doctrinal assessment that the nuns’ group was tinged with feminist influences, focused too much on ending social and economic injustice and not enough on stopping abortion, and permitted speakers at its meetings who questioned church doctrine.

On the other hand......

The Roman Catholic Church is set for an important discussion in October on some of its most central social teachings, such as gay unions, divorce, contraception, cohabitation and others in a meeting of senior Vatican officials called by Pope Francis.
The LA Times described the upcoming assembly as "an urgent meeting of senior clerics this fall to reexamine church teachings that touch the most intimate aspects of people's lives," and said that the meeting could potentially pave the way for a new direction by the church on these issues.
The report further said that the run-up to the synod is a departure from usual practice, and highlights Francis' commitment to take a new approach when it comes to dealing with church matters. The initiative is part of the pope's instructions last year to diocese leaders around the world to survey local attitudes on social issues. The results have not yet been released, but reportedly are being analyzed by the Vatican behind closed doors.

The bolded part is a bit of a head-scratcher.

In other words, the nuns have become Progressives rather than Catholics.

There is a hierarchy of truths in the church.

If you spend 90% of your time talking about "economic justice", 1% about abortion, 1% about the gospel message of salvation, and 8% of the time on heresy that's a problem.

What if you spend 90% of your time on abortion and the danger of Progressives? 1% on mercy, 1% on grace, 0% on justice and 8% on gay marriage?

Confirming how the RCC has lost it's way. Agenda > Compassion.

In the hierarchy of truths, abortion, which has killed tens of millions of children is the greatest moral issue of our day....bar none.

"America needs no words from me to see how your decision in Roe v. Wade has deformed a great nation. The so-called right to abortion has pitted mothers against their children and women against men. It has shown violence and discord at the heart of the most intimate human relationships. It has aggravated the derogation of the father’s role in an increasingly fatherless society. It has portrayed the greatest of gifts ~ a child ~ as a competitor, an intrusion, and an inconvenience. It has nominally accorded mothers unfettered dominion over the independent lives of their physically dependent sons and daughters. And in granting this unconscionable power, it has exposed many women to unjust and selfish demands from their husbands or other sexual partners. Human rights are not a privilege conferred by government. They are every human being’s entitlement by virtue of his humanity. The right to life does not depend, and must not be declared to be contingent, on the pleasure of anyone else, not even a parent or a sovereign."
-Mother Teresa

We'll just have to agree to disagree. It may be a moral issue, but it's not the moral issue. There is currently a global industry built around selling actually-born children for sex. There are more slaves in the world now than at any time in history. To me that is the top moral issue facing humanity.

Not necessarily the views of the pope.

"The church's pastoral ministry cannot be obsessed with the transmission of a disjointed multitude of doctrines to be imposed insistently.”
"We have to find a new balance," he said. "Otherwise, even the moral edifice of the church is likely to fall like a house of cards, losing the freshness and fragrance of the Gospel."
"We cannot insist only on issues related to abortion, gay marriage and the use of contraceptive methods. This is not possible," he said. "The teaching of the church, for that matter, is clear, and I am a son of the church, but it is not necessary to talk about these issues all the time."

The pope’s words are likely to have repercussions in a church whose bishops and priests in many countries, including the United States, have often seemed to make combating abortion, gay marriage and contraception their top public policy priorities. Francis said that those teachings have to be presented in a larger context.
“I see the church as a field hospital after battle,” Francis said. “It is useless to ask a seriously injured person if he has high cholesterol and about the level of his blood sugars. You have to heal his wounds. Then we can talk about everything else.”
From the outset of his papacy in March, Francis, who is 76, has chosen to use the global spotlight to focus on the church’s mandate to serve the poor and oppressed.

I guess you didn't actually read the article:

"Pope Francis “reaffirmed” the critical doctrinal assessment that the Vatican made of the nuns’ group last year, and endorsed the “program of reform,” the statement said."

Why would he reaffirm the critical doctrinal assessment and endorse the program of reform if it wasn't his view?

There have been approximately 1.334 Billion children killed through abortion in the world since 1980.

Where does it say that the Pope believes that abortion is priority one? Did you read her article? The Pope says this (which I really appreciate):

Do you get what he is saying? Abortion is a symptom of a spiritual condition. He is not only concerned about the baby but about the souls of the mother and the father. He wants the church to minister to the "lost and the broken", not berate them. If you are trying to get people to "come to Jesus", I think you are doing it wrong.

Josh Blakesley (a Catholic songwriter) put it this way a few years ago:

Bridge
Welcome pauper, rich man, leper,
hungry exiled, joyful, poor,
come you pris’ner, free man, sinner,

come to the Lord.
Come to the Lord.

Refrain
Come to Jesus,
hope that frees us,
life that breathes in us.
Come to Jesus,
and believe that he is love.
Oh, come.

How many have died from disease? Famine? Female infanticide? War or violence?

Do you think it is possible to stop the abortions in China without having a relationship with the people? Why would they listen to you or me or the Pope?

It is kind of interesting that RIPF is a regular adherent to part of being a Christian is being "hated" by the world, and yet this Pope is beloved by so many people en masse, even ones that are often quick to hate Christians off-hand.

RIPF, yet again, is apparently superior to the Pope.

Disease is not a moral evil but part of the human conidtion. Famine has caused the deaths of about 88 million children since 1980 which is less than 7% of the total deaths of children caused by abortion.

About 2 million have been killed by war over the last decade.

Regardless if people will listen or not, Catholics have an obligation to confront this greatest of evils.

Josh Blakesley (a Catholic songwriter) put it this way a few years ago:

“It is must be therefore reiterated the strongest opposition to any direct attack on life, especially innocent and defenseless life, and the unborn child in the womb is the most concrete example of innocence,” said Pope Francis. “Let us remember the words of the Second Vatican Council: From the moment of its conception, life must be guarded with the greatest care while abortion and infanticide are unspeakable crimes.” ( Gaudium et Spes, 51).

Strongest opposition....most concrete example....greatest care. There is nothing stronger than the strongest. There is nothing more concrete than the most concrete. There is no care greater than the greatest care. This is priority one.

Apparently not...

"We cannot insist only on issues related to abortion, gay marriage and the use of contraceptive methods. This is not possible," he said. "The teaching of the church, for that matter, is clear, and I am a son of the church, but it is not necessary to talk about these issues all the time."

Not talking about something all the time doesn't mean that it isn't the top priority. The church has many many doctrines.
