The Pats F.O. has been at the most odd this year, and at the least lackadaisical. FA is a time to get better, fill needs and gain depth. The idea as Bill stresses, is to "get better". I struggle to see the Patriots as much better than 2013 Cousins, with perplexing moves and non moves that almost seem like an........ "Oh Well" off season.

Don't kick my buttocks on Revis and Browner. I was a Browner fan all the way at the minute of FA. Revis was a stroke of luck and genius. BB knew that the Bucs would toss Revis and knew his salary would prevent a gold rush. He bid his time.He might even have taken Revis is Talib resigned. Why not, the way the deal structure worked great.

Grades on FA moves:

I give them an "A+" on Revis (the plus was because we did lose Talib)

I give them an "A" on Browner

Edelman? I give them a "B". Comfort for Brady only. I like the kid but he is replaceable. He needed Brady as much.

LaFell? I give them a "C" He is kind of a Donte Stallworth 2007 move. He is just o.k. and probably a decent #3 guy, no more. He is like a 40 reception and 4-5 TD guy in a "Gaffney" type of way. Let's hope we are not counting on LaFell, Amendola and Edelman as first class NFL WR talent! They are trying to unload Amendola and Dobson might not make a difference pending his foot. Thompkins is in the decline and Boyce is a wild card. Austin Collie is a 50-60 reception and 7-8 TD guy when healthy. He seemed like the only guy besides Edelman who could get open in the playoffs. He has much better hands than Lafell or Dobson and he is only 28. If we are giving up trying to find a #1 WR and going with quantity over quality, might well see if Collie can be better than LaFell with a training camp and Brady at the start this year.

Now the rest of the positions:

F.O. Finding a#1 guy at WR? "F".....so far! Hicks was a risk but the price was Patriotesque and we whiffed. Was the Jackson gang deal trumped up? He was reasonable when you look at what Decker and Wallace are paid. They have to have something in mind via trade.... Andre Johnson? Perhaps. He might work. Fitzgerald? Love him but the F.O. is not that aggressive. Blackmon? He makes perfect sense but the F.O. probably lost Jacksonville's phone number. Mike Williams has just go picked up for the cost of a 6th rounder from the Bucs to the Bills. A steal there perhaps and Marrone knows him. Another miss......ah but they say Steve Johnson might be available now. He is 6'2" and O.K.,... a little bit of a diva but a 1,000+YD WR when healthy. An upgrade over LaFell in talent and only 27. ...Would ya? Same conference might not work for the Bills.
The Pats HAVE to have a plan in mind!

D-Line? I give them a "D". Should be an "F" for not paying attention and secondly for a missed opportunity to make the Team better. I love Vince. He is aging and who knows if he is the same player. The number to cut him was attractive price wise if you get someone better. Would not Jared Allen as pretty darn healthy and still effective have made the Patriots better for the $8mm he signed for? The astounding part is after Vince resigned we had the money to get Allen and whiffed again. The Pats are a better Team with Allen than Vince in my humble opinion, but both could have happened. Too much "March Madness" basketball Bill.

Kamerion Wimbley is being asked to cut or your out in Nashville..Thoughts Cousins? Bill..is there any interest? He can rush! Had years of 9.5 and 11 sacks.

LB? "C-" for indifference. They tried Woodyard...O.K. Still kind of weak in the middle. Pat Angerer is available. He has been nicked in 2012 and 2013 but had 148 tackles, 9 stuffs behind the line and 3 passes defended in 2011. He is only 27 and Bill's buddy Kirk Ferentz coached him. Tackling Machine and now healthy. Was a second round pick in 2010. Cheap competition in camp.

TE? "F" you mean to say that the day when we pick up Chung, the Ravens get the productive Owen Daniels for near the same money and we need a TE? Is the Draft board all set for that position Bill?

O-Line? "F" See above. The overpriced sieve Connolly is still here and the munchkin Wendall? resigned? Does the Draft Board have some corkers lined up at OL Bill?

RB? "C" Still think Ridley is overrated. He has some "dance" in him. I liked Blount's game better. If smart, they get something for him before his rookie contract expires and Draft a RB to back up Vareen.

QB? "INC." Mallett still has value after the dust and the hype clears on the big three. A Trade might be in the works if he is sending first class plane tickets to those QB's who might drop. I think Mallet is already traded.

S? "INC." Has to be ...Chung? Please. Was not Gregory even better?

Bill must have some clandestine plan to make the Pats better! At this minute Cousins, do any of you think they are much better than 2013?

Is this a serious question? The trickle down effect with Revis and Browner is going to be huge for this D.

There is so much bizarre stuff here. Where does one begin?

I think your biggest problem, DW, is that often your assessment of players has little or no bearing in reality. Collie hasn't been a 50-60 reception guy in years. Thompkins in decline? You're really going to pimp Kam Wimbley because he had 11 sacks in 2006?

There is so much bizarre stuff here.

Re-quoted and agreed.

And it took me a while to figure out this guy was calling us "cousins". And capitalizing it for no reason made me think he was referring to Kirk Cousins the QB.

I think Bills plan would look a lot more clear if you looked at it properly.

You seem to be looking at what he didnt do and asking what the plan is rather than looking at the roster and asking whatelse is needed?

I know the popular wish lists are TE, Pass Rush, and OL help.

But in looking at the roster you see Gronk, Chandler Jones, Nink, and a return of all starters on the OL from last year. Yes we could use depth at these positions but clearly he has a plan for the starters at these postions so what is the big deal. There is still alot of free agency and a draft to go and this roster already looks very stacked. Seems like the plan is working great to me.

So the offseason is a failure because BB didn't sign pricy (above vet min) free agents at every position you think is a need?

This might have actually made me dumber. Why do people think that we can fill the entire roster with Pro Bowlers? How about you wait until the draft to criticize the roster? We aren't gonna pay a pass rush specialist more than 5-6 million AAV period unless it was JJ Watt so we were never in position for Jared Allen.

Try. Your smart.

No no he doesn't need to try. Bizarre is the word for this thread. Am all for discussion but with this:

I am no cool aid drinker but the idea that this team somehow is not better than 2013? I mean right there and then you stop reading. With all the injuries last year? With all the additions this year? With an upcoming draft that hasn't happened yet? Still not bet better? You're throwing A grades for certain acquisitions yet Pats FO is in "whatever mode"

That whole thing was incoherent.

You're right, Pats are just 'shooting from the hip' this year.. I actually heard they all got
together and decided that instead of putting together a FA/ Draft board they are going to just 'wing it'.

Also- there's this thing called a Salary Cap... Not sure if you've heard of it..

Here's the main point - Just as a reminder we were VERY close to another super bowl with these players either coming back from injury or signed as FA - these are all "upgrades" to the playoff roster..

Mayo
Wilfork
Gronk
Amendola
Kelly
Boyce
Dobson
Tompkins
Armstead
Harrison

And we added
Revis
Browner
Lafell
Chung

Meaningful Subtractions
Talib
Blount

How is that standing pat.IMO it's not even close - the amount of talent coming back/added >>>> talent lost

Bill has A plan. Bill apparently does not have YOUR plan.

Has Belichick ever been in 'whatever' mode?

is this a late april fools joke?

Yeah, nobody exemplifies "whatever" like Bill Belichick. ....

Has Belichick ever been in 'whatever' mode?

Exactly. It's one thing to question the plan or certain aspects of the plan, that's all part of a healthy critique. But to imply that Bill is just shrugging his shoulders and going with whatever comes his way is just a fundamental misunderstanding of his style.

Fair assessment/ I asked what the Cousins thought. So noted from you . Not looking at my opinion as a matter set in stone. People are quick to challenge but they do not read.

Bill has A plan. Bill apparently does not have YOUR plan.

I had an opinion only. Good or bad it is still an opinion. I asked for a retort with interest in hearing other opinions. I am taking that from you as a yes as in "He did not miss out on any of these players because as he is a very, very smart man and the other 31 coaches and GM's rot. Further more he is infallible and how dare DW Toys even question his approach to sign invaluable players and future Hall of Famers such as Chung, Wendall and LaFell." Did I fix that for you?

I suggested some upgrades and possible players missed. You can't get them all, I get that, but some should have been great fits.

There is a movie you need to rent. The Time Machine with Rod Taylor (he of The Birds fame) "the surface dwelling Eloi, who on first glance lead a carefree life" AND finally realize following wasn't such a great idea.

Sorry...sarcasm prevailed and won here.

I struggle to see the Patriots as much better than 2013 Cousins, with perplexing moves and non moves that almost seem like an........ "Oh Well" off season.

The Patriots signed the player that was widely considered the #1 UFA on the market (Revis) and signed many other players ranked in the top 30 UFAs at their respective positions.
- Revis #1 ranked UFA CB
- Browner #20 ranked UFA CB
- Edelman #4 ranked UFA WR
- LaFell #17 ranked UFA WR
- Wendell #5 ranked UFA OC
- Chung #28 ranked UFA SAF

Edelman? I give them a "B". Comfort for Brady only. I like the kid but he is replaceable. He needed Brady as much.

You are giving a B-grade for Edelman who was one of five players with 100 receptions and 1000 yards last season, when the team signed him to a deal worth about $4m per season. Huh, that is an A+++ in my opinion.

LaFell? I give them a "C" He is kind of a Donte Stallworth 2007 move. He is just o.k. and probably a decent #3 guy, no more. He is like a 40 reception and 4-5 TD guy in a "Gaffney" type of way. LaFell has more yards and touchdowns in his first four seasons than Amendola has in his career to date, and the Patriots signed him less than 1/3 the price as they paid for Amendola last season? LaFell was an excellent signing; you are not looking at the cost compared to the value the player offers.

F.O. Finding a#1 guy at WR? "F".....so far! Hicks was a risk but the price was Patriotesque and we whiffed. Was the Jackson gang deal trumped up? The Pats HAVE to have a plan in mind!

Why would we invest a second round draft choice into Aaron Dobson and then after a very solid rookie season by him go out and sign a player that would cost big money and push Dobson to a depth role? That makes zero sense, we did not sign a #1 X-WR because we do not need one we have one already. In addition, signing the only WR on the UFA market who had 100 receptions and 1000 yards (Edelman) would suggest otherwise to what you have said here.

D-Line? I give them a "D". Should be an "F" for not paying attention and secondly for a missed opportunity to make the Team better. I love Vince. He is aging and who knows if he is the same player. Too much "March Madness" basketball Bill.

You have that mentality that if Belichick wants a player he can just go out and drag him back to his cave. Allen has played in KC, Minnesota, and now Chicago; he is a Midwest guy and was not associated with any East coast team that I heard of. I would not assume that Allen was even an option.

I also disagree that Allen would have been better for our team, our scheme is built around Wilfork and his ability to 2-gap at the 1tech.

Kamerion Wimbley is being asked to cut or your out in Nashville..Thoughts Cousins? Bill..is there any interest? He can rush! Had years of 9.5 and 11 sacks.

He is a, has been and that is being polite because other than his rookie season he never was much.

TE? "F" you mean to say that the day when we pick up Chung, the Ravens get the productive Owen Daniels for near the same money and we need a TE? Is the Draft board all set for that position Bill?

This is the deepest draft of TE in recent memory it makes sense to add players in the draft whenever possible and that is the case with the TE position.

O-Line? "F" See above. The overpriced sieve Connolly is still here and the munchkin Wendall? resigned? Does the Draft Board have some corkers lined up at OL Bill?

OL is also very deep in this years draft.

RB? "C" Still think Ridley is overrated. He has some "dance" in him. I liked Blount's game better. If smart, they get something for him before his rookie contract expires and Draft a RB to back up Vareen.

Ridley has 2477 rushing yards, 4.5 average, and 20 touchdowns in his first three NFL seasons. I consider him underrated and not even close to overrated.

The reality that Mallet isn't going to be traded for a #1 or high #2 sinking in is making posters like the OP crazy.

I missed the memo that FA is all over now.
Many cuts to come, right through early September. BB staffed the 2001 squad with such guys.
