Miguel can correct me if I'm wrong, but if I understand it correctly:

1a. The Patriots are charged against the 2014 cap for any incentives that are deemed likely to be earned (LTBE): any incentive that he would achieved had it been in effect in 2013, and any incentive in his "sole control" (e.g., weight-related).

1b. The Patriots are not charged against the 2014 cap for any incentive that is not likely to be earned (NLTBE, one that would not have been paid in 2013). For example, the incentive for 60% snaps played was not reached in 2013, so that's NLTBE this year.

2a. If Wilfork achieves an incentive initially deemed NLTBE, that will be charged as an adjustment against the 2015 cap (reducing cap space).

2b. Similarly, if Wilfork fails to achieve an LTBE incentive, that will be credited against the 2015 cap (increasing cap space).

Incentives are classified as NLTBE or LTBE (not likely to be earned or likely to be earned). Most of his playing time I think are NLTBE because it's based on what he did the past season. So that's whence the 5M comes from.

If at the end of the season he has earned all his NLTBE then the Pat's cap for the next year is charged that amount. It's kind of a settling up.

THat's the Cliff notes version of it. I think that's right.

So right now they get cap relief, but it might reverse next year (2015), somewhat. That's if he recovers well enough to play at all.

From the CBA:

"Any roster bonus which is deemed not "likely to be earned" based upon
the player's performance during the prior year shall immediately be included in Team Salary when earned."

so for Wilfork's 46-man active roster bonus. The LTBE amount is 350,000 or 87,500 times 4 (amount of games he played in 2013). So after each game over 4 that he plays in the Patriots will lose $87,500 in cap space.

During 2013 I would track the Patriots cap space and could never figure out until recently why the changes did not match what I expected. That is, I could see the Pats' cap space go down by the amount of a player's reached NLTBE roster and did not realize that was the cause until now.
