The new pass defense with Revis and Browner

From a broncos fan:

I've only had one glass of wine so far, but I think This will blow up in the Pats face. Revis has been a pain in each teams side the last few years and teams can't wait to dump him and Browner is good but a tad over rated in my mind. They better hope they keep Wilfork because without a push those two will get worked all year.

Uh. 1 glass of wine buddy? Good god...i forgot revis is a JAG

No pass rush according to them so we have no shot

He doesn't get really crazy until the second glass of wine. Then look out, the man's out of control.

I LOVE good CB play so I am very excited, but we have to realistic about Browner. He not ideal against small, fast WRs, but fills a need for covering larger, slower WRs and TEs. If the Patriots can get some DL help, this will be stout defense.

I have this fantasy about drafting Calvin Pryor...oh man what scary, intimidating defense that would be. Pryor probably slipped because of the Combine, but I doubt he will come close to 29, but we can dream.

Pats did quite a bit of 3 CB + 1 S base looks last year, taking either Gregory or Harmon off the field. Browner is going to play mostly around the line of scrimmage, sometimes on TEs like Talib.

People arguing CB or SS are arguing semantics. The Pats now don't have to shuttle those guys on and off the field.

Can't wait for Browner to cream that little prick Welker in the open field. BOOOOM!

All you have to do is look at the Jets defense and how much they blitzed when the had Revis and how much they blitzed after he went down and then traded. In Ryan's first two years with the Jets, the Jets blitzed 54% (2009) and 44.7% (2010) of the time. In 2012 (Revis was injured most of the year), they blitzed 34% of the time. I can't find the 2013 stat, but I am guessing it is lower than 2009 and 2010.

That's what Revis gives you. You have the flexibility to send extra players on a pass rush if you want. Or disguise rushes or coverages. Or play players closer to the line to be ready for the draw.

I'm in favor of any approach that will collapse the pocket around Manning and force him from his spot. The Seahawks showed how effective this approach can be in the Super Bowl. Bill's seen this rodeo before because it's what he used to do on a regular basis.

The Pats have the Secondary in place. Now, they need to upgrade or add to the Defensive Line. It'll be pointless hoping for coverage sacks if Manning can hand the ball off and run on the Patriots.

If we assume the status quo, we can suppose it'll be another Brady-Manning epic in the AFC Championship. Who'd have it any other way?

Ya no pass rush, defense was plagued with injuries and finished #5 in sacks.

You like me know that stat was accumulated despite having Wilfork, Kelly and Armsistead on IR and starting a couple of totally inexpereinced DTs. The Dline is altrady fine ans so is the pass rush. Andre Carter rejoined the Pats at the end of the season and provided a rotation vet to give Chandler and Ninko a third guy to give them a blow. It is just what the Peppers and Allen wishers are all about. But they don't know we already got him in the last few games last season.

And Talib and Ware don't have their own question marks? Talib is constantly injured and he only played at an elite level for a six game stretch in his career. Ware has his own injury concerns. Ward is a great in the box safety type, but he is average in coverage.

You can argue that the Broncos moves are risks that could blow up in their face too. And I still think their offense could take a major step back with losing Decker, Manning and Welker being another year older and showing significant physical declines last year (Manning's arm strength and Welker looked slower), and they need to replace both guards.

Broncos fans seem to think that they didn't lose anything this free agency and all their additions are guaranteed success.

The only thing I agree with this poster is that the Pats need to upgrade their DT spot from last season, but I don't know if Wilfork is some one they have to have.

Manning can hide his declining arm strength if he has time to throw with his smart decision making and quick release. If he is throwing under pressure, it is a huge weakness in his game and can be exposed.

We finally have the secondary that can get off the field and make big stops in crunch time

With the addition of Browner, I am content with our secondary. I expect us to draft a DT with our first pick.

Most interesting thing about the Patriots secondary is the top six players are actually all cornerbacks and have all been successful cornerbacks to boot.

- Revis
- McCourty
- Browner
- Dennard
- Ryan
- Arrington

The days of 60 yard touchdowns are should be behind us boys and girls…

I used to post for two years on another Denver forum before they finally banned me following last years epic comeback win

I say this absolutely literally: Bronco fans are over all the most ignorant and dumbest fans in the entire league. That isn't meant as a knock against them. They just live in a bubble. They don't watch football, they watch the Broncos, so I expect most of them don't even know who Revis is.

I don't hate any fan base except for that one solely because of how ignorant and ******edly arrogant they always get despite never winning anything.

I'm sure there's all kinds of stupid going on at Bronco forums right now.

3rd down D has always been a problem...lets hope now it's changed

Small fast can be covered by Dennard (outside) and Arrington (inside).

Ok folks, with Revis and Browner in the fold, here's what I want to see next: Peppers or Allen. I want one more great pass rusher to pair opposite Chandler Jones. And then here's the lineup on passing downs:

The NASCAR pass rush package
DE Julius Peppers or Jared Allen
DT Chris Jones
DT Chandler Jones
DE Rob Ninkovich

Every one of these guys can get after the QB. Even Ninkovich.

The Cover Linebackers
LB Jerod Mayo
LB Jamie Collins

Both do a good job in coverage - Collins has the potential to be great. So you won't see many TEs shake free.

The Lockdown Secondary
CB Darrell Revis (I still can't believe I can say this)
CB Alfonzo Dennard
CB Logan Ryan
S Devin McCourty
S Brandon Browner

You've got Revis on the other team's #1. Welcome to Revis Island, where receivers disappear. Then Dennard on the other team's #2. As he improves, he will show himself to be a very tough cover guy, especially since the safety help will be rolled his way. Ryan against the other team's #3 WR (or RB like Sproles) is a good matchup for NE as well. Then McCourty plays centerfield and Browner can take the remaining WR or TE.

In other words, the Pats would suddenly have the ability to cover every single receiving option with superior coverage talent, AND have four very good pass rushers to get after the quarterback.

Holy crap this is exciting.

And then here's the lineup on passing downs:

DE ANDRE CARTER
DT Chris Jones
DT Chandler Jones
DE Rob Ninkovich

There Fixed it for ya.

DE ANDRE CARTER

It will not be Carter, he is a UFA and I do not expect him to be resigned. Michael Buchanan is an excellent talent, he lost his reps because of his inability to contain the run but that is mainly technique and understanding assignments which should not be as big an issue in year two.

Well, the fact he considers Wilfork integral to the pass rush suggests he's had more than one glass.

Armon Armstead is a wild card for the DL also. If he is healthy he cold be a beast inside and provide the inside rush we have been looking for. We still have Hightower and Silinga inside for the rush.

This is a great erector set of talents for BB to play with.
