Rumor or Speculation (IDK): Patriots shopping Amendola

You know what I hate most about threads like this (over and over again)?

They are the STUPID echo of New England sports radio, which is no better than right-wing hate radio.

It hurts the ability of local teams to attract and retain talent - and that's the truth. There are players who won't come anywhere near Boston because the place is one big gripe-fest.

Guys like Amendola certainly are aware of this constant harping. it does nothing to help attitude, performance or anything else.

It's ****-bag whining and nothing more.

I've got a dear friend who played for the Sox. Loves Boston - absolutely HATES most of NE sports radio and columnists and insists that other places (other than New York, Philly, and Chicago) simply aren't like this.

I was a book convention in Anaheim many years ago. The Red Sox wound up in the same hotel. Down at the bar, I saw Frank Viola and Danny Darwin sitting at a table with a couple of other guys - I was always a Viola fan so I went over to say hi and introduced myself as a writer from Boston.

They immediately started ragging on me, so I figured I was bugging thenm and excused myself, but asked one of the other guys (I thought I recognized him) if he played for the Sox. The guy exploded at me. "How can you not know?"

"I listen to the games more than I watch..."

"I'm the only one on the team!" (He was the only African American on the Sox at that time.) "How can you not know? You said you were a sportswriter?"

They were pissed.

"No, not a sportswriter...I'm a novelist, out here for the BEA convention..."

"Oooooohhhhhh," from all of them. Complete change of attitude. Invited me to sit down and have a drink...and introduced me to Herm Winningham.

Amendola played his guts out last year. He deserves more respect than this board gives him.

I don't care in the slightest that he played his guts out, it's irrelevant, the only thing that is relevant is whether the team is better off keeping him or sending him packing.

If we can send them Mallett and Amendola in exchange for picks, especially if a restructure were done to have Houston absorb the cap hit for 2014, I'd be happy as a pig in poop.

i was actually thinking about adding this to point G of my post. great point. In sports, the only way to stay on top is to take the following stance...

WHO CARES WHAT SOMEONE DID FOR YOU TODAY, YESTERDAY, LAST WEEK, LAST YEAR, WHENEVER. THE ONLY THING THAT MATTERS IS WHAT CAN YOU DO FOR US IN THE FUTURE.

sentimentality wins NOTHING...and amendola didn't even really do anything for us. if management believes he can help us in the future than fine. if not, syonara....that type of decision has to be made with everyone at some point (except Kraft) brady and bellichek included

keep a guy bc he tried hard...what a joke

Were there players who did not play their guts out last season on the Patriots? Aaron Hernandez played his guts out for this team for 3 years yet this board has no respect for him. Playing your guts out as an NFL player should go without question, and it does not merit anything from this board.

Hernandez is sui generis.

I was making a point, playing hard as a member of this team does not excuse the reality or earn your anything. Amendola worked hard at his job which he is compensated in the top 5% of the country to play, that does not impress me whatsoever. Posters act as if Amendola is playing this game free, he is not, and Amendola is the 25th highest paid receiver in the NFL, he better be playing his guts out, the average household income was around $45K last year, Amendola earned 126 times that himself.

I would respect Amendola a lot more if he recognized that he failed to meet the expectations of his salary and threw half his salary out the window as he drove along the Gillette parking lots for the fans to collect it. Everyone is so defensive for Amendola but he made out, the team and the fans they all were left with disappointment because we did not have the receiver we needed to help us win a SB, Amendola still got a check for $8 million during 2013, no skin off his back whatsoever.

A guy like Lloyd who caught a pass and fell down...other guys who have been known as "soft"...other guys who are problems in the locker room...

The average household isn't an NFL player. It's a dumb and completely irrelevant comparison.

I like how the implication of this post is that somehow Amendola stole our money and we should hate him for this.

This despite the fact that even ignoring his injury, his raw performance was about (even above) where you'd expect given his paycheck. Of course, your response to this is to exclaim that just about every veteran wide receiver is overpaid as if that makes any sense, and then use the cash he was paid rather than his salary cap hit as a way to evaluate the return on investment despite this making zero operational sense for anyone but Robert Kraft (and that's a sunk cost anyhow).

I don't see how taking a $4.8M 2014 cap hit helps us to sign Edelman.

It would seem that cutting Amendola before March 11th and spreading the $4.8M between 2014 and 2015 ($1.2M and $3.6M) would work much better, freeing up $3.6M of more cap space than trading Amendola (presuming the goal is replacing Amendola with Edelman).

The $4.8M is a cap hit that will be taken over the next 4 years in any case. The question is when and what additional monies will be committed to Amendola.

BTW, why would anyone give a draft choice for Amendola when they probably can get Edelman for the same price as we would with no draft choice?

Amendola has no trade value imo.

Right, this is where this speculation falls apart. The salary Edelman commands is going to be comparable to Amendola, but you can get Edelman for free while Amendola will cost you a draft pick.

If a team acquired him they would not have to pick up his bonus money and would only be responsible for his base salaries. If they signed Edelman they would have to pony up a signing bonus.

The difference is Edelman made $765K. Trust me when I tell you I would think as highly or Edelman's performance if he was being paid $5.7M.

5 pages of posts due to an Incarcerated Leigh.....

the only way he gets traded is if its a LeGarrette Blount type thing were the pats are going to cut him anyway so they trade him for a 6th or 7th rounder, and no BOB and the Texans are not giving up the first pick in the 2th or 3rd round for anyone not named Brady or Gronk from the pats

You're still ignoring the facts.

Amendola only cost the Patriots about $3.5m against the cap last season. For that cap hit, his production was higher than what you would expect when compared to all other NFL receivers who are off their rookie contract based on simple univariate regression analysis. Amendola's yardage was about what you'd expect of someone costing $4m against the cap and his receptions about what you'd expect of someone cost $6m.

Edelman's performance would be impressive even if he cost $10m, because you could move him across the chart and still not hit the regression line.

Someone correct me if I am wrong but isnt that a 4.8 cap hit? Yet some people here would be happy if that were to happen? The hate is strong for Amendola reminds me of the Edelman hate prior to this year. I have a feeling these same fans will love DA's game when he blows it up next year.

Because one graph reflects that. I look at the fact that Edelman and Amendola combined for 30 receptions beyond 11 yards in the air. That tells me neither one of them are worth anything close to $5 million.

Which gets you closer to the end zone, two 15 yard receptions or three 10 yard ones?

That's all well and good but teams will play bend but don't break. When the field gets shorter and congested the $6M slot receiver is not much of a factor.

Edelman led the Patriots in touchdown receptions last year so this seems like an odd point to try to make.
