Could the cap be even higher than $132 million? Yes, according to a report

Also interesting is Florio's source saying that similar increases in the following years.

Wasn't the cap supposed to be raised slower now with the new CBA?

I'll say it again.

the Cowboys chances of actually being under the cap become bigger and bigger.

How did Gerruhy pull this rabbit out of the hat.

I assume the teams know the exact number or have better metrix then the public to project this.

When is the exact date that everyone (public and if known by teams yet) will know the precise amount? Day one of the league year?

The Pats managed the cap so great through the uncapped year and the renegotiation and the first few years of the new deal and now the cap is going to start rising over the next few years. We were kind of sold wether through the team itself, the media, or just our own wishful thinking that the team was setting itself up for this and if the cap is going to be that high this year and increase similarly next year as well then this team is in amazing shape. Very stacked with talent under contract this year and next and great cap space this year and next. Now go spend and gimme gimme gimme!

How many years into the new deal are we now and I guess we are done with the slow raise now and the actual percentage the players agreed is starting to kick and it would appear the cap will be going up significantly over the next few years....just my novice analysis of the situation. and as I just said we were kind of sold on the idea that through the uncapped years and first few years we were setting up for this so it will be interesting to see what will come.

The takeaway from this euphoria is that there will be less cap casualty FA players on the market than if the cap were under $130M as originally anticipated by some

I am betting the NFLPA is borrowing against future cap. As Florio pointed out, DeMaurice Smith is facing some tough challenges for re-election in 2015. When the CBA deal was done, the promise was that the cap would expand exponentially in 2014. After the stunted salaries last year, the cap had to expand quite a bit or the players could have revolted.

Even with the expanded cap, I wonder if teams will spend a lot of money on players. I think many may be weary that this year's cap increase could be an aberration and do not want to get caught in a cap crisis if the cap increases stall next year.

I don't know how I feel about this, honestly.

On the one hand, I'm all for seeing more money go to the talent, but on the other hand, this rewards the irresponsibility of reckless team managers (Dallas), and so punishes the teams that played it smart these last few years - and might even cause resentment to players who took discounts/restructures/long term deals without anticipating this sudden explosion of money.

It also allows the teams that have been perennial losers, drafting high and often, to hold together powerhouse teams they've built - Seattle, San Francisco...

Not sure this is a good thing when you have an incredibly smart and savvy front office like we do here in New England.

Just an aside for an opinion....

I don't think it's really fair to bag too much on Dallas and Washington when it comes to the recent salary cap situations. A lot of their cap issues have to do with the league punishing them for not joining in on the collusion during the last CBA.

i think this year is the first year that the cap is above 08/09 levels. the players are probably thinking "finally" that the cap is going up. wasn't it predicted that there would be a large increase soon due to the new tv contracts?

The market will become a mess this FA

Fair point.

That said, I wonder if the players were blindsided by this, and if so, what that means for those who signed long-term deals at 10-15% less than they could have gotten now...

Yeah, good on them for front loading some huge contracts in the only Cap-less year and really going all new york yankees on the nfl.

Talks are underway now...

Albert Breer ? @AlbertBreer The NFL and NFLPA are in talks now to set the salary cap. As @ProFootballTalk said, it's expected by most (but not all) to exceed $130M.

It wouldnt be a thread here without a Danny Amendola reference sooo..

If the cap is really 135 mil DA's contract might be a deal. He probably would have made more last offseason if the cap exploded like this. I wonder what this will do with Talib and Edelman's salaries tho it is probably worse for us because I feel a lot of teams will overpay to the extreme if the cap jumps like this..

Per a league source, the salary cap will be $133 million in 2014. That’s a significant jump from the spending limit of $123 million last year, especially in light of recent increases of only a million or two per year.

Tom Pelissero of USA Today reports that the official number will be announced most likely by Monday, and possibly as soon as tomorrow.

I think only a few players will get paid big money from other teams. I think for the most part teams will retain their own free agents and not let superstars hit the open market

The new CBA encourages teams to build through the draft with the rookie wage scale. Teams can get players that out perform vets at a minimum cost. This will encourage teams to take care of their own FA first and only shell out big money to sure things who hit the market. Why pay 4 million to a 31 year old veteran who got cut for cap reasons when you could find a cheaper long term fix in the draft
