I would be thrilled with Lynch. I think he's the second most talented rush end in the draft class. Late 2nd? God yes.
The best pass rushers are the ones who can go through you or around you. That's Aaron Lynch.
I don't see Lynch as an edge rushing 4-3 DE. To me his body and his game don't currently match up. He dropped weight last season to try and become that more explosive edge presence but despite how well he might test athletically, its just not his game. I think he would be much better suited adding weight and moving to 3-4 DE where his length, anchor and violent hands work much better. I think he is much better suited to being 280-290lb 3-4 DE in the JJ Watt mold rather than a 4-3 DE. To me he is a 4th rounder because he is a project and he has some character and work ethic concerns, but the talent is there to be something special if he can be utilized correctly.
Similarly I've really fallen on Trent Murphy as a 4-3 end. As a 3-4 OLB I think he is great because he has some pass rush moves, is instinctive and has the athleticism to play in space. As a 4-3 DE I think he lacks bulk and isn't stout enough against the run to be very effective. Especially if he were asked to play LE I think he would get mauled by RT's. I like them both as players but I question their fit and their value.
I think this is a really weak DE class and a need I would much rather address in free agency. There are quite a lot of free agent options that we could consider from the top level guys like Greg Hardy, Michael Johnson and Michael Bennett; ageing vets like Jared Allen, Justin Tuck and Anthony Spencer; and some buy low candidates like Will Smith and Willie Young. I've stated before my preference would be to shell out the cash for Michael Johnson because I think he is an ideal fit. He is a quality pass rusher, very strong run defender, good athlete and an iron man on the field playing over 90% of Cinci's defensive snaps last year. His sack number dropped last year because the injury to Geno Atkins forced him to change his game a bit, but that only led him to being the #2 graded DE against the run in the NFL. Hopefully the depth of FA DE's will drop his price a bit but I would pay the man.
