The 2014 Mock draft Thread.

As I've said elsewhere, if the Pats were operating purely from a business perspective it would make sense to restructure Tommy Kelly to a cheaper deal and then cut Wilfork and go after UFA Linvale Joseph. Cutting Wilfork would save $7.5M, and Kelly's cap hit could probably be cut down from $2.5M to around $1.5M. Joseph is 25 and a very good run stopper and overall DT, and even in the most extreme contract scenario for him you could probably keep his 2014 cap hit to under $5M. Joseph, Armstead, Siliga and Jones would all be 25 or younger and a very good nucleus going forward. Kelly was playing well and seems very happy to be a Patriot. If the Pats lose out on Siliga, Wilfork could be re-signed on a "prove it" deal once he works himself into shape. If someone wants to go after an injured 32 year old DT aggressively - albeit a likely HOF one - that's the risk. But I think it is unlikely that Wilfork will regain the form that we saw from 2004-2012.

But there are other factors: Wilfork's leadership, the fact that he has been a HOF player for us, and 10 years of history. It would be a very hard call.

What do you think about Cam Thomas (Chargers) as an option for a run-stuffer?

What do you think about Cam Thomas (Chargers) as an option for a run-stuffer?

I haven't studied Cam Thomas that extensively. He was somewhat soft - including against the run - when he came out in 2010. He lost his starting job to Sean Lissemore at the end of this season, though he still played a fair number of snaps. Not so sure.

Both Daniel Jeremiah and Mel Kiper mocked Jace Amaro to the Pats today in their first mocks. Jeremiah had Clowney going first overall and Kiper had Manziel

Draft Scout had Amaro and Tuitt going to the Patriots in the first.

It is going to be really interesting watching these players rise and fall over the next 4 months, looking back at the early mock from PFW last year about a 3rd of their first round picks weren't selected there, with a number of them, like Barkley and Logan Ryan going much later. I love Amaro as replacement but would be fine with Sefarian-Jenkins if he is off the board. I really like Tuitt as well, even though his senior year was off a bit. Like most here, i think, i am looking at TE as their first rounder and think there's a decent chance belichick would go with one in the first. he has always used high picks at TE and right now it is a major need.

Agree with pretty much all of this.

With the underclassmen declarations just about complete (only Vic Beasley still to decide, as far as I can tell), time for a bump.

Assumptions:

- Pats resign UFAs CB Aqib Talib, RB LeGarrette Blount, WR Julian Edelman, LB Dane Fletcher and TE Michael Hoomanawanui; RFA Danny Aiken may be re-signed, but only if it is cheap
- UFAs LB Brandon Spikes, C/G Ryan Wendell, OL Wil Svitek walk; UFA DE Andre Carter retires
- Tommy Kelly takes a pay cut, and either Vince Wilfork restructures or UFA DT Linvale Joseph is signed
- Possible extensions: Steve Gregory, Stephen Gostkowski, Matt Slater (with lower cap hits for all 3); Devin McCourty, Shane Vereen, Marcus Cannon (all in contract year)
- I’m including a Ryan Mallett trade, and assuming the Pats get 2 6th round comp picks.

Gonna be optimistic and assume the Pats are picking #32 in each round.

32. Trent Murphy, DE,Stanford. 6’6” 265#. Currently NFL DraftScout #32.

Super Beast!
Murphy is a bigger, stronger, faster, more athletic version of Rob Ninkovich - not a bad way to go. He plays mostly OLB for Stanford which means that he has some coverage ability, but I project him to LDE for the Pats. He doesn’t have elite speed off the edge, which will drop him into the Pats’ range, but he has a non-stop motor, tremendous toughness, and a nasty streak - but always plays under control. Nicknamed “rhino” in high school and “yeti” in college, Murphy is a tremendous beast who will bring a physical dimension to the DL that the Pats need. As current Ourlads director Dan Shonka notes, Murphy brings a rare combination of “intelligence and intensity”, and rare movement skills in space for a player or his size. Those attributes will make him far more successful in the NFL than pure speed rushers. Drew Boylhart calls Murphy “the type of player you build your defense around.” I predict Murphy will be a better pro than Jadeveon Clowney, just as I predicted that Doug Martin would be a better pro than Trent Richardson. BB will love Murphy’s intensity, work ethic, intelligence, versatility, and willingness to do the little things and the dirty work. Comparison: Chris Long, with a touch of JJ Watt.

Trade: Pats trade Ryan Mallett to either Houston for #33.

Trade: Pats trade #33 to Jacksonville for #39 and 101.

39. Kyle Van Noy, OLB, BYU. 6’2 1/2” 245#. Currently NFL DraftScout #37.

Beast!
Kyle Van Noy is an extremely high-ceiling player who has incredible instinctiveness, explosiveness, and pass coverage skills. He is very fluid in space and covers tremendous range. He is not a typical BB edge setter or stack-and-shed player, but he can be coached up a bit in that area. He would give the Pats the coverage LB that they have lacked for so long. Van Noy combines elements of Jamie Collins’ versatility and Lavonte David’s instinctiveness. Trent Murphy, Rob Ninkovich, Jamie Collins and Kyle Van Noy would give the Pats an incredible group of versatile weapons on the front 7. Comparison: Somewhere between Jamie Collins and Lavonte David.

64. Troy Niklas, TE, Notre Dame. 6’ 6 1/2” 270#. NFL DraftScout #51.

Beast!
Troy Niklas is a massive TE who gives the equivalent of an extra lineman combined with a huge red zone target and a guy who can move the chains. He doesn’t have Rob Gronkowski’s breakaway capability, but he is under-developed as a receiver and Comparison: Brandon Pettigrew.

Trade: Pats trade #96 (116 points) for #107 and 139 (116.5 points).

101. Bryan Stork, OC, Florida St. 6’4” 312#. Currently NFL DraftScout #114.

Stud Horse!
Bryan Stork is one of the most fundamentally sound centers to come out in some time, with good size and under-rated athleticism. As much as Travis Swanson is a perfect fit, I have Stork rated just behind Swanson, and he would be terrific value in this range. He is experienced and technically sound. He will be a 10 year starter and better than Dan Koppen. He also has some versatility to play guard. Colorado St. OC Weston Richburg (#91) could also be an option here. Comparison: Ryan Khalil.

107. Billy Turner, OL, North Dakota St. 6’6” 312#. Currently NFL DraftScout #108.

Sleeper Beast!
Billy Turner currently plays tackle, but projects best to guard. Draftinsider rated him a 2nd round talent, but as a small school prospect most have rated as a day 3 prospect. His upside is ridiculous, and along with juniors David Yankey and La’el Collins he is one of my 3 top guard-tackle prospects in the draft. Turner has great size and movement skills, and plays with a nasty streak. He will move in a RG immediately if Marcus Cannon does not, and take over at LG for Logan Mankins in 2015 when Mankins will be 33 and a cap casualty. He also has the all-important flexibility to play tackle as well as guard, and is a potential 4-position player. Dante Scarnecchia will love this kid. If Nevada OL Joe Bitonti (6’4” 315#) is still available, he would be a very good option as well. Stanford OL Cameron Fleming (6’ 5 1/2” 318#) or Miami OL Brandon Linder (6’ 5 3/4” 319#) would also be options. Comparison: Josh Sitton.

128. Richard Rodgers, TE/H-Back, Cal. 6’5” 245#. Currently NFL DraftScout #214.

Sleeper Stud Horse!
Rodgers is a poor man's Eric Ebron (and not that much poorer), at much better value. He is seriously undervalued right now, but should rise during the pre-draft process. Rodgers and Troy Niklas in addition to Gronk and Hooman will give the Pats an elite TE corps. Comparison: Owen Daniels.

Trade: Pats trade back in the 5th round from 139 for 5th and 6th round picks.

5. Cody Hoffman, TE, BYU. 6’3” 210#. Currently NFL DraftScout #210.

Sleeper!
Cody Hoffman is seriously undervalued right now in a very deep WR class. Tony Pauline had him rated as a 2nd round pick. He is a big, physical WR who doesn’t have break away speed but who can move the chains. He will give Mark Harrison some competition as another big WR in addition to Aaron Dobson. Comparison: Jordy Nelson.

6. DeAndre Coleman, DT, Cal. 6’5” 315#. Currently NFL DraftScout #207.

Sleeper!
Coleman is a solid, blue collar player with underrated athleticism and 3-4/4-3 versatility. He can generate pressure, but is strong against the run. He’s not flashy, but he gets the job done. Comparison: Tommy Kelly.

6. Jonathan Dowling, DB, Western Kentucky. 6’2 1/2” 198#. Currently NFL DraftScout #243.

Sleeper!
Dowling was highly recruited to Florida by Urban Meyer, then dismissed for a violation of team rules. He has stayed clean at Western Kentucky. He is a long, physical DB with excellent ball skills who can play safety or outside CB. Comparison: Malcolm Jenkins.

6. Trey Millard, FB/H-Back, Oklahoma. 6’3” 253#. Currently NFL DraftScout #268.

Sleeper Beast!
Millard is a Swiss army-knife kind of player who can do a bit of everything. The fullback is coming back into mode, and I could actually see the Pats carrying both James Develin and Millard in 2014. Develin played 25% of the snaps in 2013, and added tremendous toughness and blocking ability. Comparison: Charles Clay.

(continued due to length restrictions)

(continued from previous post)

6 (comp). Larry Webster, DE, Bloomsburg. 6’6” 249#. Currently NFL DraftScout #189.

Sleeper!
Mike Webster’s son is a tall, lanky, athletic player who also starred on the basketball team for 4 years. He could play a hybrid pass rusher role, or convert to TE. He’s clearly a developmental prospect, but there is a lot of athleticism and upside. Comparison: Athleticic potential to be a developmental Dion Jordan on defense, or Jimmy Graham on offense. That’s not to suggest he’ll be anything like either on a football field.

6 (comp). Jeff Matthews, QB, Cornell. 6’3” 224#. Currently NFL DraftScout #293.

Sleeper!
Jeff Matthews has a cannon of an arm and attracted a lot of interest, but he had a dismal senior season. There are some issues with his footwork and processing speed. However, he has looked very good at the Shrine Game. He’s clearly a developmental prospect, but the raw tools are there. The Pats have been successful at developing QBs, and Matthews should be able to develop into at least a serviceable backup. Comparison: Matt Cassel.

7. Zach Bauman, XB, Northern Arizona. 5’10” 200#. Currently NFL DraftScout #481.

Sleeper!
Zach Bauman is opening eyes at the Shrine Game this week, and I expect him to rise. He will give Brandon Bolden strong competition as Shane Vereen’s backup. Comparison: Devonta Freeman.

Projected Roster:

- Projected cuts: Dan Connolly (cap casualty), Isaac Sapoaga, Adrian Wilson, Tavon Wilson(on the bubble), Michael Hoomanawanui (on the bubble), Joe Vellano (on the bubble), Brandon Bolden (on the bubble), Jake Bequette, Chris White, DJ Williams (PS candidate), Steve Beauharnais (PS candidate), Markus Zusevics (PS candidate), TJ Moe (PS candidate), Cory Grissom (PS candidate), Justin Green (PS candidate), Kanorris Davis (PS candidate), Jonas Gray (PS candidate), Brice Schwab (PS candidate), Chris Barker (PS candidate).
- Projected IR: DeAndre Coleman and Larry Webster get the “Foxboro Flu”. Coleman could take Tommy Kelly’s spot in 2015, and Webster could convert to TE. Cody Hoffman could also go this route if the Pats keep Michael Hoomanawanui and use Mark Harrison as more of a WR.
- Projected additions: Nick McDonald - a versatile, low cost lineman who can play all 5 positions, and who is experienced with the team. Younger, cheaper and more versatile than Dan Connolly.

QB(2): Tom Brady, Jeff Matthews
RB(4): Shane Vereen, LeGarrette Blount, Stevan Ridley, Zac Bauman
FB/H-Back(2): James Develin, Trey Millard. Pats surpise by keeping 2 FBs, with Millard playing an H-Back role as well.
WR(6): Danny Amendola, Julian Edelman, Aaron Dobson, Kenbrell Thompkins, Josh Boyce, Cody Hoffman [Mark Harrison]
TE(4): Rob Gronkowski, Troy Niklas, Richard Rodgers, Mark Harrison (could also play a hybrid WR/TE role). Gronk and Niklas give the Pats 2 in-line TEs. Rogers, Harrison and Trey Millard provide H-Back versatility.
OT(3): Nate Solder, Sebastian Vollmer, Marcus Cannon, [Billy Turner]
OG/C(5): Logan Mankins, Billy Turner, Travis Swanson, Josh Kline, Nick McDonald. Two rookies and two low-cost options helps offset Logan Mankins’ big cap hit. Marcus Cannon and Willl Svitek also provide flexibility.

DT(5): Vince Wilfork/Linval Joseph, Tommy Kelly, Armond Armstead, Chris Jones, Sealver Siliga
DE(4): Chandler Jones, Rob Ninkovich, Trent Murphy, Michael Buchanan [Armond Armstead]
LB(5): Jerod Mayo, Dont’a Hightower, Jamie Collins, Kyle Van Noy, Dane Fletcher
S(4): Devin McCourty, Steve Gregory, Duron Harmon, Nate Ebner, [Jonathan Dowling]
CB(5): Aqib Talib, Alfonzo Dennard, Logan Ryan, Kyle Arrington, Jonathan Dowling

Very nice mock Mayo. Lots of great names.

One correction, and it's one I found out after doing my own mock this morning, but Bauman is 5072 rather than 5'10". Actually put me off him as a BB pick (Shrine game measurements).

great mock mayo only thing i would maybe change would be keeping the 33 and hoping hageman or nix is there but Van Noy is a beast and a great pick as well and could be a beast

Although it always falls into the category of wishful thinking the Mallett for Houston's 2nd really does make a lot of sense to me. Houston could take Clowney or trade down and pick up picks while still getting their QB for the long term. And if O'Brien wants to run the same offense they did in New England then he would have a young QB with 3 years of professional experience in that system, and that's a hell of a lot better than gambling on a rookie to get it, Imo Mallett has put to rest the character questions that plagued him leading up to the draft and he should be a good bet for a team that needs a young QB.

IF they were inclined to go with a bigger QB and a pro-style approach, Houston could easily "double dip" by trading for Mallett and then drafting someone like Zach Mettenberger around the beginning of the 4th round. The total cost would be a lot cheaper than what Washington did 2 years ago.

Have to redo this one. Soured a bit on taking Yankey.

As far as athletic ability Kyle Van Noy is off the charts, reminds me of Von Miller. Hadn't realized that. Saw some highlights, yes, I know they're highlights, but it's pretty amazing.

Not sure about taking AAron Donald either, but tempting.

Still not sure if Talib could be signed for reasonable money.

I want both of them but I'd be ok with just taking Easly a bit later if it allowed us to get someone like Van Noy and/or Allen Robinson.
