That was pass interference

Don't get all the hand ringing about whether this was a PI or not, one would think that the call went against the pats who were screwed by the reffs through out the game. (remember the fumble that wasn't) The way the game is played today with the emphasis on scoring where the rules favour the offense and the receiver that was PI. We have all seen it called for a lot less contact. Payton Manning has made a career out of ticky tack PI calls.

The contact occurred at the 8. The defender definitely had an arm on Boyce's shoulder pad.....but......I find it interesting that the local fandom chooses to ignore Boyce's simultaneous stiff arming of the defender. After the MUTUAL contact, the coverage into the end zone was clean IMO. At no point did I see an impeding of Boyce's ability to get the ball once they entered the end zone.
Anyway ....Pats win......who's next

You mean like Gordon did every play but Talib was constantly flagged. Unfortunately in the NFL, the defender is guilty a large percentage of the time even when the wide receiver initiates or interferes also

This angle makes it look like pass interference to me. Ticky-tack pass interference at best, but it is pass interference by the letter of the law. He grabbed Vereen while the ball was in the air and didn't look back for the ball.

That defender was a busy boy....whacking Boyce and Vereen

That was PI, and an obvious PI.

What blows my mind is how everyone is calling that a "horrible call" yet when gronk gets litterally tackled out of the back of the endzone against the panthers nobody says "horrible call" "terrible call".

The media bias is reaching BS levels.

Well, in the media's defense, pretty much everyone did call the retracted call a travesty in the Panthers' game.

oops! my bad. Vereen caught so many balls yesterday that I think he caught all of them.

This. There was way worse PI or defensive holding going on earlier in the game that wasn't called. In the first half, Pats receivers were strewn all over the field before the ball clanged on the ground with nary a flag in sight. That fumble that wasn't, that we couldn't even challenge, was ridiculous. I don't blame Browns fans, and other NFL fans even, for thinking the Pats got away with one at a very opportune time. But, we had been getting screwed all day long, and to me I thought, "it's about time." In fact, when the call happened and they took a few minutes to announce what it was, I was sure it was going to be offensvie pass interference (even though there wasn't any) the way things had been going all game.

Bottom line is they've got to do SOMETHING, training?, assigning the same crews to the same team all year? to make officiating more consistent. It's ridiculous what a crap shoot it is out there every week, particularly with certain officiating crews, like this one.

I didn't see anyone call it that all i saw were a bunch of "oh well the call could have really gone either way" "the way the ref explained it means it wasn't pi, or holding, or contact after 5 yards"

I first thought it was a cheesy call but not now.

Not turning back for the ball. Grabbing at the elbow and a hand up in the facemask.

We've seen Dennard and Talib do this time and again and not get called for it. The flag should have stayed in the pocket. It didn't didn't this time. That's just the way it is.

The outside world think we paid the refs, obvious interference:rocker:

Was it a ticky-tacky call? YES
Have we seen worse? YES
Was this consistent with the way the game was called? NO

It was Jerome Boger's crew, the same ref who did the super bowl and the refs screwed up that game too.

It was a borderline call, no doubt, but (a) the defender never turned back on the ball, (b) the contact occurred over a span of ten yards or so, (c) the defender clearly gave a last tug on Boyce's elbow in the end zone and (d) the ball ended up about 3 or 4 inches past Boyce's grasp...so without that contact, maybe he makes the play.

And in any event, its about time we get a call at the end of a game.

I don't believe its bias......well kind of, but the real root cause is pure unadulterated envy.

as a former bills guy, he's just sick of watching the pats stomp the division.

I don't think it was "obvious" PI, simply because there really is no such thing any more.

As I said in another thread, there are two things very clear to me in this year's NFL -- both PI and offensive holding at the line have become pure advantage/no advantage judgment calls. You can hold as much as you want this year, but unless you grab the facemask, hold to save an imminent sack by a defender in very close proximity to the QB, or hold at the point of attack of a run, it's not going to be called.

I believe the very same thing has happened with PI. Contact is now allowed on every play. The "clearly uncatchable" rule has been de facto displaced. Officials now are judging the play almost exclusively by asking themselves: (1) was there non-incidental contact, and (2) was the defender trying to play the ball, and (3) do I believe that the receiver had a good chance to make a play on the ball if I don't call it.

That's it. They aren't saying it, but that's the new rule. It's a total judgment call whether the receiver had a decent chance to catch the ball but for the contact. They've made it more of a subjective judgment call than ever before this year, which is why there seems to be so much inconsistency.

Under that standard, this was PI. I think Boyce not only had a decent chance to make the play but for the contact, but actually a better than 50/50 chance to come up with the TD.

I won't defend the new rule administration -- I'm clearly on record as saying it needs to be made more objective instead of going to the subjective rule we have now. But at least for now, this is the rule. It's pretty much become the equivalent of the NBA foul call -- contact is allowed, but you make your decision whether the foul created an advantage/disadvantage. And under that formulation, that was PI (both at the 7 yard line and in the end zone).

what's all the hysteria about anyway...Boger called a penalty that has NEVER been called before or since that moved a missed FG spot 15 yards closer and handed the Patriots a loss. This call HAS been made as well as not made ALL THE TIME. Week in and out.Call it even up.

If that happened to the pats...we would all be sitting here making threads *****ing once again about the officials for weeks strait saying it's not a penalty blah blah

I laugh at what I heard from media yesterday. Pats won because refs gave them a terrible call.

But after Carolina and Jets games after questionable calls it was Pats didn't make enough plays to win.

How about Cleveland didn't make enough pays to win.

Hate how media wants to have it both ways

Dennard and Talib at least make an effort to turn back for the ball and most times they are playing the ball.

Thats whats made the difference in the NE pass defense this season. Clearly this Browns player was not only grabbing at Boyces arm, but also got his hand up in Boyces field of vision because he was beat.

1. Not turning back for the ball.
1. Grabbing the WRs arm.
1. Hand up in the facemask.

3 strikes youre out!
