Talib being resigned would be my priority, after that I would take a look at a free agent tight end. I would love Graham but I am sure that is a pipe dream. On the defensive side of the ball I would be happy to see them add a safety to partner with McCourty – TJ Ward of the Browns could be had at a reasonable cost in my opinion.

Talib & Browner with Dennard at Nickel!

Alex Mack is pretty much a must sign to me at this point, a very very good C.

Talib & Browner with Dennard at Nickel!

Alex Mack is pretty much a must sign to me at this point, a very very good C.

I have this fear that Browner wouldn't be good in a different system and without those two safeties behind him.

Talib, Mack, and a first round RG sounds good to me.

Arthur Jones seems like a nice fit. And bearing in mind that Sebastian Vollmer isn't ridiculously expensive and somewhat injury prone, as a complete longshot I'd offer up Jared Veldheer who could be Nate solder's twin.

A couple of outside the box suggestions.

And slightly off topic but for people looking at a center or right guard type, they should take a look at Arkansas center Travis Swanson. My Pats draft spidey sense is shaky at best but it's tingling at the thought of Travis Swanson. looks to be a real nice fit: SEC experience, captain, Senior, long arms and very athletic.

While it's always exciting to talk about free agent possibilities, I'm going to temper my expectations a bit this year--even more than usual.

We have a lot of big names coming up of our own between now and Feb 2015 (about 16 months), so we may be forced to be even more cautious than usual. There was about another 1.2 or 1.3 million of cap room eaten up by the filing of the AHern grievance last week, so I believe that we're currently down to about 4.5 million at the moment.

In the meantime, I'm sure that some money will be freed up, and it would be terrific to see any of these great players signed to our team.

TJ Ward is exceptional, as is Alex Mack...one thing to keep in mind is that their current teams likely feel that they are exceptional too, so they may never even hit the market.

An interior lineman, or maybe even two--will be needed in the upcoming draft. On top of that, they are needed in the top couple of rounds, maybe the top few rounds at the latest. I wouldn't be opposed to even taking one in the higher rounds (1-3), and then an additional one in the middle rounds too.

Actually, both sides of the ball in the trenches is a bit of a need in my opinion, and I probably wouldn't have avoided it this far myself. I hate to look back in hindsight, but Mo Wilkerson was my #1 binky a couple of yrs ago when we traded with N.Orleans. I was practically 100% positive that he was everything that we were looking for on the D-line. Luckily, we made up with that with the Chandler Jones pick, but every time I see Wilkerson I still think of what could/should have been; and I'm not a guy who looks back at past drafts and mopes too often.

TBH, I would be pretty pleased if the Patriots could re-sign Aqib Talib and make extensions for other Patriots players whilst adding propositions such as Linval Joseph (DT), Michael Bennett (DE) and/or Michael Johnson (DE)[even though I know he'll be expensive] etc.

I don't believe the Patriots will make a splash with flashy Free Agent acquisitions and will more than likely extend their own guys whilst adding a few savvy veterans here and there. That said, I do covet Alex Mack. You can never have enough outstanding linemen (both OL & DL) in the NFL on your roster.

It's interesting that the franchise tag for offensive linemen is exactly that, not separated by position. Presumably at approx 9 mil, Alex Mack isn't getting franchised.

Arthur Jones, Scott Chandler, and I'd love to stick it to Denver and get Decker!

I'm leaning towards a pass-rusher after Talib. You can never have enough pass-rushers. We have Chandler Jones at RDE with Buchanan backing him up. Ninko at LDE with Andre Carter backing him up. I've already given up on Jake Bequette. A lot of people think DT. But, we have a lot of bodies there. Vince and Kelly coming back. Sopooaga, Jones, Vellano, Fortson and we haven't even seen Armstead yet. Talib, DE(draft, usually too expensive in free agency) and Mack works for me.

I think 2014 will be Mankins last year with the Pats. Even though he has a big cap number next year, we will only save about $2.5mil if we cut him. The question is can we replace him for less than that? I don't think so. Let him play out 2014 and then cut or trade him saving $7mil against the 2015 cap.

I think DT is obviously going to be the most interesting position to watch for the Pats in the offseason. Potentially it's a strong group if Wilfork and Kelly return 100%, Armstead becomes the player we hope and Vellano and Jones continue to develop. Unfortunately I don't have great hope that Wilfork and Kelly will both be the same players they were before getting hurt, Armstead hasn't even practiced yet and Jones and Vellano look like much better sub rushers than base DT's (as evident by our run defense). As difficult as it may be, Wilfork and his $11.6mil cap hit may be cut, saving $8mil. Although I would much prefer and extension to reduce the cap hit a few mil. Either way I don't see him playing at $11.6mil next year. If Kelly doesn't return to form he could also be a cap casualty saving $2.5mil. It will also be interesting to see how Sopoaga fits because we could save another $2.75mil cutting him also.

Some other potential cap casualties could be Connolly ($3mil saving) and Adrian Wilson ($1.16mil). With Gostkowski looking like a good extension candidate to reduce his $3.8 mil cap hit. With Wilfork, Mankins and Hernandez contracts coming off the books in the next few years there is some room for long term contracts, especially with Brady at a very reasonable price. We do also have to keep our own so I would expect McCourty to be paid next, then probably Solder. This doesn't include Talib who I think worst case scenario will be franchised, although I would hope for a long term deal.

In terms of bringing in FA, like most others Alex Mack would be my top target. He is a quality C and would be a nice upgrade over Wendell. I would also love OG Jon Asamoah from KC, who I think is one of the most underrated guards in the league. I doubt KC would let him get away but he would also be a great fit. I think an O-line of Solder, Mankins, Mack, Asamoah and Vollmer sure would look nice protecting Brady (unlikely though).

The other position I would look to target in free agency is TE. The two that interest me the most are Dennis Pitta and Brandon Pettigrew. Pitta is the better pass catcher while Pettigrew is the much better blocker. Pitta is coming off a major injury and is a major piece to the Ravens offense so he may be tough to get. While Pettigrew seems to be on the outs in Detroit and isn't a great fit for such a vertical offense. I think as the #2 TE, blocking and catching shorter passes from Brady he could be a valuable player. I must also say that Pettigrew was my binky coming out of Oklahoma State so I may have a higher opinion of him than most.

In terms of fantasy FA acquisitions I would love Michael Johnson, T.J. Ward or Lamar Houston, but they will all likely be out of our price range. However, if we can come out of free agency with a solidified O-line and a solid #2 TE I think we would be in a great position to go after a DT and developmental QB in the draft.

Given Talib's history with the hip injury, I wonder if his asking price would go down in the offseason. That would be the #1 priority to me, given the way the pass defense has declined since he left the Saints game. Either re-sign him or get a suitable replacement.

List of what I like to see. All depending on how the resign and extend sections go. If those are accomplished obviously a few names come off that FA list.Obviously not all of this below can happen without busting cap but initial thoughts.

Resign
CB- Talib - No explanation necessary.
LB Spikes- Depending on $ he wants, if too much goodbye.

Extend
CB- Devin McCourty (expiring 2015)- No explanation necessary.
LT- Nate Solder (expiring (2015)- No explanation necessary.

FA
C- Alex Mack - Obvious reasons, FA or draft.
DE- Michael Johnson - BB liked him before, likes him now. Will come down to $
TE- Ed ****son- 2 TE offense, FA or Draft it will happen.

Draft
1- DT- Wilfork is an FA in 2015.
2- DT- Again because all we got after Wilfork is old vets and unproven.
3- TE- 2 TE offense here, depending on ****son.
4- OG- Mankins replacement.
5,6,7- Best available

I wouldn't go near Ed ****son, a Ravens fan I talk to said he whiffs on a lot of blocks has inconsistent hands and runs poor routes. He was all for seeing ****son cut/traded 4 weeks into this season!

I really like the Arthur Jones idea, him and his brother could be nasty together.:rocker:

The Patriots have a 5th year option they can exercise on Solder after this season for the 2015 season.

"Teams have an option for a fifth year with first round picks that must be exercised after the third year of the deal. The fifth year is guaranteed for injury when the option is exercised. It becomes fully guaranteed if the player is on the team’s roster at the start of the fifth league year.
The fifth year salary of the rest of the first round (picks 11-32) is the average of the third through 25th-highest salaries at a player’s position."
